South Devon Report 2011

Had a day at Meadfoot but it was a birthday party for my daughters so I was supervising kayaks rather than diving. The sea was flat calm and the vis looked good so it was hard not to be in the water but I guess I've earned credit for another day

Saw some shocking disregard for the 5 knot buoys including this idiot who was towing a waterskier inside of the buoys and even came inside of Shag Rock :rcard

Make sure you have a big flag and a bazooka on your buoy if you're heading for Torbay!

Send the pics to the harbour master?...the first one seems clear enough to identify...and he might just get some 'advice' even though its outside the jurisdiction?

Just came back from early session 5am with dan the viz was not as good as last night and wind blowing from E a bit quiet on the frist 2 spots on the 3 one things got a bit hot for me on my 3 dive this beast came out in hurry and bang on the stringer on the scale 10lb on the nose next spot produce 2 bass one 7lb8oz and the other 3lb12oz time to go home what a week :friday:friday

great fish there olli well done .went in myself the weekend tryed some filming hope you all like had 5 bass this the best 5lber couldn,t download to deeper blue for some reason but if you look on youtube and enter neale crawford spearfishing it should come up sorry if it a bit raw happy hunting

The fruits of this weeks spearing/gathering culminated in a lazy afternoon at the beach. Reminds me why I go spearing.
Let's hope the weather returns soon.

Went for a dive yesterday looking for flatties again. I had a 3 plaice a lobster and a Lemon Sole. I thought it was a brill but when i got back to the boat i realised it wasnt a brill. I met up with another spearo about a hour later who said right away what it was,a Lemon Sole. He did have tail damage where some thing had taken a bite out of at one stage.

I have already lost one of a pair!! Thats where the name "shiny1" comes from. A clue,i no longer wear my speedos on the beach anymore.

He was spot on 1lb in weight on my Fox digital scales last night. He's been on ice since. Im taking it to a fish dealers to be weighed on there scales. I need to weigh it on a set of scales checked by the Ministry of Weights and Measures. I cant see a Lemon Sole on the BSA records list.

There was some left actually. The pan does about 6 or 8 raciones/portions. There were only 4 of us eating [Kids opted for the processed burger thing!]
The seafoood of Cuttlefish, spider and bass came from the sea within 24 hours and the veg, french beans, broad beans onions etc came out of the garden an hour before. Wine from tescos though. Need to work on the vineyard!

Shiny that is a remarkable catch!
I have never actually seen a lemon sole apart from on a fishmongers slab, they are certainly not common around my way.
I think the majority are caught in deep water & more northerly too.
I have never heard of any diver taking one before & I don't think there is an official record ?

Thats what i thought. When i caught it i was more caught up with hanging on to my lobster in the other hand. I had both on the same dive. I was gasping for air and didnt really take much notice,thinking it was another brill. I had a small brill in the same area one week ago. It wasnt until later on when i met up with Dave Thomasson that he said its a Lemon Sole.

I've been told on many occasions that it's not just about size.

Its a rare catch for our waters in shallow. As for fish of the month,i put it in so it can be entered in the flat fish comp. Its small but none listed in the BSA records list.
