South Devon Report 2012

Managed to get in for a dive yesterday. It was just starting to settle down after a week of wind and rain. The wind was stronger than predicted on the day with vis down to about 3m. Plaice and Triggers were on the menu today and any cod that happens to get in the way!!
The first spot i tried wasnt sheltered much from the westerly wind so after a couple of dives i moved closer to shore for a more sheltered dive. I found 2 plaice and a brown crab on the first reef,no triggers. I then moved off to another small reef were i seen a shoal of triggers on my last dive there. The tide was running now making staying on the reef difficult. Seeing the reef from the surface at 8/9m when you only have 3m vis made diving frustrating. No plaice found on this reef but i did find 3 triggers and called it a day.

Had a nice dive over the border near torquay....sorry guys no vis across this way, so an invasion was inevitable.

Managed a fair sized bas of just under 4lb, a john dory of a 1.5 lb and two jumbo mullet, biggest was 5lb.

Vis was 2-6 meters. All fish during a night dive exept the JD he was in a cave at mid day.

Lee i hope you had your jabs for Infectious Big Fish Syndrome before you came to South Devon? You also need a Visa to dive any further west than the area you are diving now.

Weather is unsettled for the week again. I am off to Ghana for a week from Tuesday and the forecast is thundery no Shiny I wont be taking my diving kit, I will leave diving those African/foreign waters to the more brave of heart boy. I think it will be the 7mm suit for me when I get back.

Just in case anyone out there is as stupid as me!

THERE IS NO VIZ SOUTH HAMS!!

Don't know why but couldn't help myself, guess I'm addicted!
After an hour through tight flooded lanes, arrived at my first dive site to be met with waves crashes onto the beach, walked up to the headland to see a mighty swell off shore. Stood with a coffee trying to convince myself but even I'm not that stupid. Moved off to Thurlestone seemed an age with Sunday drivers a plenty, met with similar conditions but thought sod it and in I went. Made it out to the rock but the swell again was chucking me around so came close in, viz = couldn't see tip of spear. Dropped into a gully no more than 5ft water got up close and personal with a good size mullet but not so close to be coming home for tea.
Next dive back towards Salcombe viz again was poor but came out after 1 hour with 2 mullet 2 & 3lb at a guess. Sat on the headland with a coffee watching a guy surf into the estuary, says it all really. Time to head for home.

Gave an old lady walking her dog the smaller mullet, really seemed to go down well. Long drive home but felt good sharing my catch and making the most of my rest day, even though it was a bloody stupid idea to go!

Just walked the dog Teignmouth over towards Dawlish, brown as far as you can see. Happy days!!!!

Any surf in teighnmouth mate?

I lived there for a few years and on it day it dud hold some good surf. But usually best after a SW gale ad oposed to easterly wind swells.

No mate messy, breaking on beach was high tide though. Walked it Sunday with incoming tide but similar conditions, no surf & certainly not worth trip down.
Always found surfing fun but such a chore to travel for some waves. Mind you looking at the colour of the sea & how far it goes out, all my diving will be further a field. I appreciate not as far as searching for waves but there is nothing like having half decent fishing on your doorstep.

Looks like either a cod fishing (rod and line) chesil or north devon surf trip. Tomorrow then.

The vis sittuation is a nightmare at the mo. Dorset is brown everywhere now and chesil is running a fair sized ground swell.

No invasions to S Devon for me for a while....but i'm in cornwall friday till monday. Holywell bay.

No ,been in the Isle of Skye for a while , and conditions have not looked enticing enough since my return , but would be good to meet up soon for a dive .
