Spearfishing on scuba

Sounds like a good idea might have to look at that
I had an 8 foot Bull shark pay me a little bit to much attention of Geordie bay last year he was attracted to the crays in the bag, kicking every time they moved he got a little more interested so it dosent have to be a fish.
If you are stressed about it buy a shark sheild at least then you will enjoy your diving

Snamreh, there's a good photo gallery on DB that you can post pictures at: http://gallery.deeperblue.net/

For uploading pictures with a post, when you hit the REPLY button and the reply page loads just scroll down until you see "Additional Options", click on "Manage Attachments" and you'll be able to upload images from your computer. Keep in mind that one only has a 5MB limit unless one is a DB Supporter or Power Supporter.

Snamreh: To each his own as long as it's legal. I shoot fish on scuba and freediving. I have reels on all of my guns. As stated b/f, the fish can run w/out dragging you all over the reef. After a short run most large fish wrap up or hole up somewhere. Then the key is to get them under control and kill them as soon as possible(knife in the brain does nicely). The thrashing and bleeding will attract the most attention, so end it soon. I carry a fish stringer cliped to my BC. If the situation gets too questionable for you then drop the stringer. Just what works for me.

Snamreh, I like to carry a folding polespear that I can reholster when I'm digging out Crays, it keeps down the number of things that you've got to carry and hold onto. As for what to do with your catch, I've always gotten frustrated by hanging lines off of me and dragging my catch behind me, and usually just carry a stringer or catchbag in my hand when scuba hunting. Just drop it if need be, without any fumbling or delay. Sometimes I think it's all moot anyway, because while I've taken plenty of fish with sharks around, the only time I've been attacked was freediving without any fish on me.

One of my work mates told me on our last dive, I asked him for more details last Thursday, and his reply was "somewhere in the ocean".

Sounds like one of those unsubtatiated stories, sorry if I misled anyone, from now on I will verify things in more detail before I put up a post.

That's OK snamreh any rumour will do.
Probably the event he was talking about and the only scuba diver attack that I know of was the attack at Binningup Beach last year.
Coincidently I, with a group of friends had rented a house down there and arrived the day after it happened.
The locals told me that the diver was fishing off a boat during which they had burlied up the water and were enjoying a decent catch of fish. The diver during this activity decided he would go down for some crays and after getting a couple then surfaced near the boat with his catch bag between his legs. A shark obviously attracked by the fishing activity came up from underneath him and grabbed his legs.
Fortunately it let go, the diver was bleeding but survived.

I'm spending 4 days at Mandurah from the 27th apparently quite a few crays have been scored there so I hope my lucks in.

Good luck, we pulled 7 size crays out of hillaries on Saturday, good viz excellent ground, some big ones were out of reach, I have since bought a longer snare.

Did you read the west today, exprienced cray Diver found floating on surface at two rocks, They are currently doing an investigation on gear failure, his two buddies left him alone in 20m water!

You never stop <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=learning&v=56">learning</a> from other peoples mistakes.

The last scuba death was a Japanese girl 2 years ago who failed to inflate her BC when she jumped of the boat, paniced pulled reg out and drowned.

Hunting on scuba is absolutely unacceptable. If you can´t compete with the fish in fair terms, it´s better to go home..........or fish with a net.

I respect your opinion. I have never spearfished with scuba but probably will do soon. The thread starter lives in the same region as me. Our local fish population has been reduced due to the fact that our government allowed foreign ships to rip out our fish resources for years with huge nets measuring kilometres in size.
All of the areas that I used to spearfish, freediving have been turned into marine parks where you are allowed to fish conventionaly ie fishing line and hook but not spearfish, due I feel, to their ignorance of the sport.
Spearfishing here is generally done with scuba due to the depth and the lack of fish.
It's a situation that has been forced on us. Shit I would love to get out where I used to when I was younger, and do some spearfishing.

Thanks for your opinion but I do feel it was tendered out of ignorance, of our locality.

I freedive and spearfish in Greece. Therefore I think that the number of prey found in our waters is significantly smaller tha Australia and the open ocean.

Since you haven´t done spearfishing on scuba yet, I strongly encourage you not to do so.

And to offer an alternative........learn about freediving, go to the sea in every possible ocassion and try to catch fish. The satisfaction of catching fish in it´s own terms cannot be compared with the quantity scuba may (I say may and I mean it) give you.

Oh come on! that is hardly fair or relevent to any meaningfull discussion. The only thing that can come out of statments like that is bad feeling

It is my sincere belief that the majority of these types of disagreements regarding scuba spearfishing are due to 2 reasons.
1) A general ignorance about other fisheries.
2) A general unwillingness to see things from another perspective.
I am not suggesting that nmoiras is either ignorant or unwilling , however maybe with a broader and more tolerant outlook things may become clearer.
I myself freedive spearfish however I would not think any less of a person whom chose to scuba spearfish.
What I would take exception to is mindless killing without regard to conservation.
 
Thank you for your opinion on the matter Nmoiras. But it is just your opinion. While I'm one of the Americans you refer to that scuba and freedives and spearfishes doing both. Generally my scuba spearfishing is limited to depths I can't freedive or conditions that would make freediving spearfishing impossible. I enjoy freediving/spearfishing greatly and have shot a great many fish doing so but none the less I don't think any less of people that can't free dive or choose not to to shoot fish.
My girlfriend has a very hard time w/ her ears and sometimes can't make it to the bottom even on scuba, much less freediving. But she does like to shoot the occasional grouper for dinner. Should I shun her, heck no. I'm happy we have something we can do and enjoy together.
This debate is no different than hunters that argue w/ each other as to who is a true sportsman, the one that uses a bow or the one that uses a rifle. The bottom line is they're both hunters that have chosen different paths. I personally use both and everything I take is a trophy to me. Same w/ spearfishing.

While I personaly find scuba spearfishing distasteful, everyone is entitled to hunting in a lawful manner, in many countries this includes scuba. any more political crap like that and I'll close this thread. there is no room for it in this forum. you've been warned. :rcard
