Speargun Help!!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
That's only this years thread :)

I think Mr X is talking about my pic, which I'll put up again.

If you don't have a soldering iron just get a flat headed screwdriver and heat it up with a lighter or over a gas oven.

thanks! how exactly do you wrap it? just wrap tightly then superglue? or wrap, knot as best as i can, then super glue??
and is it as good as crimping? and can i use any thin fishing line?
what about the speartips? how sharp do they have to be? and where do you find those bass?
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

No, you wrap it over the loose end so no knots needed.

Start just winding over the loose end, then when you get towards the end put a small loop under the turns, then 8 or 9 turns later put the free end in the loop and pull it back under the turns. If you search the internet you'll find a diagram easily (we're not doing all the work for you!)

Its probably not as strong as crimping, but plenty strong enough when done right as long you aren't going after some blue water monsters! Its a lot smoother and less to catch on things. Make sure you melt the end so it can't slip under the coils.

Keep you spear tip as sharp as you can. Keep a small file with your dive gear and give it a once over before each trip, only takes a minute!

Bass you'll find all over the place but you'll need people from your own area to tell you where you find them down your way. Their habbits can vary according to where you are in the world.

Oh and don't use fishing line, its too slippery, get some wax covered whipping thread from any boaty type shop.

No need for glue if you've done it right, but it won't hurt.

i saw a small bass yesterday:t it was just swimming among mullets, and i though it was 'one of them' at first. too small to shoot though.
im off to zanzibar tonight (no spearfishing, just snorkeling and diving).
merry xmas, happy new year, and see you all in 10 days.:wave

i did:)
amazing! makes me realize (again) how desert-like it is here underwater. i noticed the locals there also spearfish, but with their home made spearguns, very simple but genious shaft release, homemade shaft, rubbers made of whatever strechable rubber they could find. i never got the change to try one though.
i saw some of the biggest fish of my life in mnemba island, a kingfish swam by very slowly at only 2 meters:inlove
i could go on for hours about the fish there:inlove although it was very hot, and very windy the whole time. i managed to get a nice ear infection. very fun to have on the long flights. and also that means no spearing now that im back:head
now to resume bothering you all again:
i think i am going to change to open muzzle. the mono is not getting as damaged as before, but i dont want to keep changing it so often, and people say it will be easier to aim without the closed muzzle. ive never used open muzzle before, so any advice??

i missed our young aprentice, its good to have you back TKK, things have been awfully quiet here :) ...try the search option on the forum and look up open versus closed muzzles you will find tons of stuff..heres my view on it... for me It Depends, for guns 100 cm and less, i personally like closed muzzles (but not like your setup with circular bands, the traditional closed muzzle with screw in, in line bands) i just feel its more accurate, for longer guns i like open muzzles because generally i would tend to use a thicker spear so its easier to deal with with an open muzzle, and power/penetration becomes the main priority...but this is not an argument where you will find one model answer,, each setup has its pros and cons..and would boil down to your preference...try the open setup and see how YOU feel about it and take it from there...

open muzzles suck in weedy waters, where there is a lot of current, or when cave/rock hunting. Why? Because the spear wobbles around too much. I will post a photo of our local solution for that, which, typically, uses a little nail heated and stuck in as a line wrap holder, which holds the spear in place while loaded. (I think some Spora's use the same idea) It is good but the line kinks. On the plus side: it is nice aiming straight down the spear... although I'm still not sure that I actually aim.. I would probably stay closed if I had the choice.

My Omer XXV Gold is an interesting gun in that you have a choise of open or closed. Basically it comes as a closed muzzle with an option to remove the plastic bridge piece and convert it to an open muzzle. It uses screw in bands but wirh an adapter that fits into the muzzle head so it does not have the threaded inserts built in. Thus it can be used with a circular band instead of screw ins.

So far I have used it for a year with the closed muzzle and screw in bands but this season will try a circular band and open muzzle.

Dave

i think th xxv has the best muzzle, thats why im waiting for the HF2

Dave, I maybe missing something here, but why circular and open? straight bands and open muzzle should be fine?

Yes you can rig it with screw in bands and open muzzle but I think one of the benefits of open muzzle is the clear line of sight along the spear. The circular band goes beneath the spear at the muzzle giving a clearer line of sight down the spear. Screw in fit along side the spear at the muzzle and tend to ruin the clear line of sight down the spear. Because of the band adapter the head does not have any screw in "sockets" and so without the adapter it is very small and streamlined. A circular band by not needing the screw in adapter makes the end of the spear more visible. That's the theory anyway.

Apart from having the reputation of being a great gun I did buy the XXV so that i could try all of the different options in one gun and decide for myself which was best or at least which suited me best.

thanks everyone:)
i changed to open muzzle, but havent tried it yet. cant wait. the main reason was that i think the muzzle is whats destroying the mono mostly.
azapa: why/how could the spear wobble? the way the spear is loaded now it is way more stable than with the closed muzzle...???

Ken, i have no idea what the muzzle on your gun looks like now, send a photo. I assume you have some kind of wrap or clip, 'cause if not the spear will fall off on turning the gun to the side or upside down. Go get some big fish the weekend and post us the pictures. Dive safe!
