Spearing north wales

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Balls ,I knew it would be nice this weekend ,when I am stuck at home with a cold...and not last weekend when I was down there.....in the rain and misery,but well....(Patrick,if you wanna use the caravan Ron has the keys) Cheers,Joel.

Dylan and I went in to a milky Aberdaron! Was a bit lumpy but fair bit of action patrolling the shallows. Took some vid but not sure if it will come out. Dyl got a couple of bass as ever... We both missed the monster! I learned that large garfish are attracted by light and that wearing a backup torch attached to your mask is not always a great idea...... did manage to pay one of them back by shooting him though! A good 50cm plus the nose!
We both had a couple of lobsters but chose to leave them to fight for another day.
we were only in for just over an hour and by the time we got out, surfboards would have been preferable to spearguns. As Dly said... Amazing the difference an hour makes, by the time we got out waves were about 50cm a d viz almost zero.
that said, great to have a night dive and with good company - cheers Dylan!
 
Well done chaps, im going to give it a shot tommorow ,conditions look ok now, light easterlies. Hopefully will have some pics/ footage to show tommorrow . Anyone else over llyn / Anglesey tommorow?
 
North side looked flat considering the gale that was blowing on the south side, well it did passing trefor and heading up the road back to bangor.sea still looked light and blue ish suppose that may be the milky appearence in the crashing waves earlyer this morn.if the wind backs off there should be some where fishable tomorrow.let us know how you get on . How did you do foxy did you get in this morn?

Had an hour and half in the Menai yesterday, bit of a disappointing day. Vis was not great but in a few patches was up to 4-5m. I got in about an hour before high water.
After about half an hour of fishing in about 3.5m of water a small-mid size pollack came for a look and ended up on the stringer. As the current dropped, I ventured out in to slightly deeper water, first dive in about 6m I was watching a small group of little pollack in front of me when something caught my eye to my right, a single donkey of a mullet cruised by me before I could get a shot off, probably the largest mullet I've ever seen. I surfaced and made another dive in almost the same spot to be greeted almost immediately by 3 or 4 decent sized mullet, one swam right in front of me and Bang!, I missed, unbelievable!! Back to the surface and down again, a few moments later another mullet showed up, this time I wasn't going to miss, I hit it and totally stoned it. As I started to pull it in from the surface it sprung to life and went ballistic, I could see that the spear was though the guts and was close to ripping so decided to let it cool off. As I tried to pull it in again I found an empty spear:vangry, perhaps I should've grabbed it when I had the chance. A few more dives in the same spot failed to yield and I was unable to see the injured fish. A little later the faint outline of a small bass was visible in the distance, I took a shot but got nothing. At this point I realised it was time to go so got out with my solitary small pollack. Well done manalive will have to give it a go with you soon before it gets to cold it a pain when you loose a good fish only if!we have all been there .May be we should hit drop n grab.every time.Foxy garfish are green ...well green boned and make your hands green.

yes, got in this morning at Oer after procrastinating for half an hour in the car About putting on v cold wet suit again... (Thats procrastinatng bass debater)
Vis bit milky but fishable... About 4m at best and better further out. Fished for couple of hours, loads of large wrasse about, got a couple of average pollock for tea, also did the mullet classic of 4lb but gut shot. Only small shoaly bass, too small to take really. who am i kidding - missed them all.
It was a nice swim but I was getting tired from saturdays efforts and the best bits at the beginning were in the deep water so took a bit more effort. Vis was quite decent on the bottom though.
All in all great weekend. not much to show for it, but saw loads and had a laugh, so quite happy with that!
 
Oh thats good to hear glad you made it out have you the garfish still are you eating it suppose to be great eating the skin makes your hands green and the bones dont look to good being green !so ive just read . Right thats it then hit- drop n grab. from now on thats if you have your gun tied to a float!roll on next weekend???
 
Sound like everyone had a good weekend all in all.
Sat was a blank for me, the vis was really great, didn't feel really into it for some reason, maybe down to seeing nothing but a few dogs, wrasse and a few piddly pollock after 3 hrs exploring in the noticeably colder water sacked it and was informed by my anxious gf I'd been pretty much surrounded by seals on and off the whole time. Little monkeys! At least they left me alone and none of them tried to 'play' I remember a few trips ago, one startled the funk out of me!!
In today again a little further down on the north. Did a few hours, man the suit was cold putting on! Vis was great again, got a good familiarisation with this previously unexplored (by me) area. Chilled more than ever on the descents, thought and explored the idea I don't need to swim hard down just generate some momentum and maintain, saving energy/oxygen arriving not much slower but way less taxed
Saw several massive wrasse, a school of mini pollock who looked like they were out for a fight(awe bless em). Saw a few of reasonable pollock further out in deeper water, strung one. Then when on way back in saw some silver in what must have been 3-4 mtrs behind a large rock (took me by surprise) couldn't get the gun round before it swam calmly off, nice mullet, I circled (large circumference) round hoping it hadn't been too spooked. When I returned to the same spot the vis was deteriorating but it (i'm assuming same fish) was back, it started to stage an exit but this time I got lined up just in the nick of time and bingo! Swam straight after it, it was thrashing on the spear which was in the gutt I didn't want to risk a tear. Cue some nacho libre action to pin it in a head lock (at least thats what i though about, oddly, as i firmly gripped it 2 hands and elbow) till we surfaced and sent it to a better place.
Enjoyed my weekend immensely.
Deffo getting colder. But hopefully fit a couple more in before the winter.

Brilliant video! Great stuff, good weekend all round. to quote Denian, youve got to be in it to win it.. And even that doesnt always help!

For me, just to get a couple of decent shots off makes for a good one. Nothing worse than swimming for a few hours and seeing sod all!
A few more trips yet with any luck!

Will do and will put some vid up from the other day in anglesea. Got some from the weekend but need to take a look at it. Mostly a bit ...rubbish..... Will try harder next time!

What could be more important than spearing?

Hay bois, got in yesterday morning at first. Vis 3-4m but milky. Only saw one Bass, straight on the keeper. Well chuffed I've not been in for over a week.
The place looked unusually quiet tho, so change of venue. Still no bass!!!! Humm did get a gold spot tho, well I'm pretty sure it was one, very silver in the water, gold spot on the gill plate. And the pectoral fin went over its eye.

In the evening I got my first night dive in. Loads of lobsters, I picked up two then kept replacing them with bigger ones. Got a bass plate size as was the first one. Saw quite a few but the wind was causing waves, so murking up and causing glare. I was getting a quick view of them, but then they were gone. All in all good weekend.
