I use the same technique.
First 1/3 dolphin, then flutter, then a last burst of dolphin when I think I can't go on.
I think the switch is good because :
1. I find flutter is easiest after turning (I dolphin with arms extended and flutter with arms by my side)
2. Different muscles
3. Some kind of mental gear change
