I use the same technique.

First 1/3 dolphin, then flutter, then a last burst of dolphin when I think I can't go on.

I think the switch is good because :

1. I find flutter is easiest after turning (I dolphin with arms extended and flutter with arms by my side)
2. Different muscles
3. Some kind of mental gear change

By the way, those apnea tables someone posted here, really work. I think I could break my P.B. with them, but never have enough time to work it up to 6 minutes. (can't wait!)

What and where are they - I would love to see them!

Alright, you all really cool guys. I`ll tell you my best: 2mins41secs, done yesterday and I`m veeerryyy proud of it. A week ago my pb was 1min01 and I`ll tell you why: I was a smoker for some years now and I`m quitting it. Hard work I tell you but freediving made me change my mind, I`m looking forward to fagless days and looooong statics! Wish me luck, I started on freediving last week and in the same timespan minimized my daily fags from dozens to 2! I needed to tell you, sorry, but i promise to report when I get beyond 3mins...

On the morning of the static comp in the pacific cup, I was awoken by coughing noises coming from the hotel room below, where the poms were staying. Looked over the balcony ledge and there was Lee Donnely having a smoke and a Coffee ?!
A little while later he set a new UK static record. :duh

Smokers can still do good statics, not that I reccomend smoking......

Backy breath

I`ve heard things like that, too! In fact, I never had breathing problems when I was a smoking competition swimmer. My ability to hold breath dwindled when I stopped working out. Very strange, but anyway, it`s mainly the bad conscience of training my lungs and in between workouts damaging them again... I`ll invest the cash saved in a pair of decent fins, will be worth it, sure!

I've had many a bad habit, but the one thing my Mom FORBID me to do was smoke. Not that I wanted to- I'd watched her have a heart attack at 45 due to her 3 pack a day habit.

You reduced PB static is probably due to your lungs shedding all the crud thats built up. Once that and the increased anxiety from nicotine withdrawl pass, you be amazed at how good you'll feel.

Geetz, quite heavy stuff... Sorry for that with your mother! I told you i`d report when i break 3.00, did 3.01@15ft today (new pb). My lungs feel much better without the fags but i think today it was more about breathing technique. My brother gave me a short lesson to the beginner I am, after that 3.01 was almost easy! Things are looking good,

Congrats on reaching your goal groats. I smoked for 14 years, and quit when I was 29 (11 years ago). My best static is 6:20, so there is hope for us! Keep us posted amigo,

Well, here's my five Israeli agoroths ($0.02).

My personal time is 4:40 dry. While not exactly impressive, I've only been training more or less seriously for the past two weeks, and until yesterday thought anything which might exceed 4:15 nearly impossible. Seems like I'm rooting out the newbie mistakes by now, and I consider myself able to achieve 5 minutes quite soon. Right now, I seem to be able to overcome the physical difficulties for this zone to remain with the mental ones.

Even if nothing would come out of it in dynamic disciplines, at least I'll have a pair of rather durable lungs.

hey guys,

i have only jus started freediving and went ot 30m tank a few days ago. I managed to reach the full -30m consistently by the end of the day. I also managed to get my static time up to 2:07-good for me.

My question is how do i train to increase my static time as i want to ideally be aiming to get about the 3 minute mark to start with. CAN ANONE GIVE ME POINTERS OT GET MY TRAINING GOING?

It`s all about breathing technique! I used a proper O2-table of about 30mins for breathe-up for the first time and here I am: 3:18, new pb... Hey, that`s +2mins in 2 weeks! If I go on like this, i`ll break the world record this summer - I`ll post it thenrofl

Hey Nick, I`m a beginner too. My advice: get yourself these O2- and CO2-tables, they help a lot. Another workout that helped me: hold your breath for 30secs, ten times, but no breathing in between (i.e. you breathe ten times, holding 30secs each time). The first 5 of these are easy, but then it gets harder and harder... It helps to get your body used to high CO2-levels. Good luck!

Allow me to ask a question.

Returning to practice after a brief period of recession caused by common cold, I've noticed quite a few changes. While it didn't take me long to return to my former performance, it feels quite a bit different. Beforehand, I had slow, noticeable contractions. Right now, I hardly feel anything at all - and yet, visually it looks as if my chest and abdomen are shivering at high speeds. As far as I know, this is an acceptable alternative which was mentioned many times on this board, and yet, the reason behind the switch is unclear.

However, I've noticed some undesired effects as well, and that being a powerful sphincter muscle relaxation reflex I've never had before. It hardly appears at statics, and yet, during any form of dynamic anaerobic exercise, it becomes the reason to take a breath rather early, while I clearly could have done more. I am fairly positive that it is connected with the sudden contraction reduction\acceleration. Or perhaps these contractions forcibly consume most O2 in the area, forcing nearby "unneccessary muscles" to relax.

Any opinions?

I just want to return to the topic who are the best static divers in the world, the few 8'+ humans:

Here is some more information that I gathered:

Karl Pernett did 8'12'' in training. (reported on this thread)

Stephane Mifsud recently set a new French record of 8'02'' (I think that is the best competition result). On his last competition he did 7'30''. (source: http://membres.lycos.fr/aidafrance/NEW/resultatscipa.html )

In a competition in Finnland on 2003-04-05 Timo Kinnunen did 7'34''. He has a personal best of 8'29'' that he did on 2002-12-07. (source: http://www.saunalahti.fi/~akivioja/cgi-bin/rank.cgi?mode=alltime ).

Herbert Nitsch recently did 8'10'' in training. (he told it a friend of mine)

Nitsch, Stepanek, Pernett, Mifsud and Kinunnen, they will all compete at the Cypress competition. I bet Stepanek will have a hard time to defend his world record.

It's really amazing that someone can hold the breath for 8min, I guess one must be born with a special talent to be able to do this.

If not I'm really interested in what the difference is to us "normal" 5-6.30 guys and how they got there.

I belive that different persons have very, very different potential for breathholding.

That's the case in all other sports but the case for freediving is that there is so few doing it so there is just a handful of the people that freedives that are born with the ability.

In for example 100m sprint everybody that is top 20 in the world is probably born with this ability but most of the people can not sprint faster than 14 sec.

If freediving grows we probably in some year will see a lot of people doing 7.30-8.30 or 90-100m (or maybe more) constant because there is so much more people that tries the sport and more people with "the ability" will compete.

I just hit a new personal best of 5:46

Why am I posting this? because only 3 days ago I had constant 3:30 The only thing I did different is running in the morning and eating 2 scrambled egg and rice for breakfast and fish and rice for dinner. Well I guess i'll keep it up then. :)

After all you are what you eat (ricy fish?)
