How did you get on? I meant to get in last night at high water (having checked it out a low water - v murky) but fell asleep...
Still pretty murky yesterday but I didn't make it in at full high, it's bloody freezing with no suit on too!
Just been in at Brighton. Viz was pretty good and I picked up two nice bass. More details and photos to follow.
Went in at Newhaven. Pretty choppy, 1.5m viz, lots of bloom and particulate matter. As you dived down it went almost black. Nice to get in but not exactly a spearfishing expedition.

Went in yesterday at 3.30am just before HW - sea was very milky and reflecting my torch light giving viz of about 1m. Only small baitfish seen.
Went in again at low water in deteriorating, patchy viz. Saw a few small bass, one takeable size (which I missed). Lots of wrasse about, as well as pout, micro pollack and an eel, though sadly no lobbies... In one spot the viz was being fouled up by a cloud of tiny shrimp.
Had a look at HW yesterday afternoon - the wind had really picked up, with breaking waves and brown water.
This morning (~5am) the sea was quite calm, but with a clear divide between the blue water and the murk about a mile out.
Oh, and here are photos of last week's fish - 45cm and 47cm.

With current viz I'd go for a 4cm rubber band pop gun 
I've got a 75cm commanche. I think 75cm is a good all rounder, but as bobnsausage points out...with current viz, shorter is better...

Had a couple of interesting dives yesterday. First around high water - viz was very patchy - butt of gun in some places up to about 3m in others. Lots of juvenile bass about - saw two nice sized numbers but they were swimming past my backhand... (sadly the 70cm pump gun's out of action having lost the spear tip - spares in the post - and I find my 90 to be an optimistic size for Brighton at the best of times). Ended up taking home a dinner sized mullet. Also saw some big pout - the only takeable sized ones I've ever seen, but they're not famed for their flavour so I left them alone.
I went back in at night an hour before low water. The wind had moved south and built, kicking up a chop. My chosen spot looked horrible, so I went for plan B. Again, very variable viz, mostly bad. The steep waves drowned my snorkel almost every breath - spluttering and puffing making me particularly unstealthy. Still, a nice sized bass swam straight under me very close...and I missed. Next up was a healthy looking sole, motionless in the sand...and I missed. By now I was feeling seasick. I paddled around for another half hour or so, chugging water out my snorkel like a steam engine before heading back to shore. There were several squid swimming along in groups of three - sadly much too small to shoot but wonderful to see nevertheless.

Pout can be great to eat. The secret is to either get them on ice as soon as they come out of the water or eat them asap. The problem is not the flavour but the fact that the flesh becomes mushy very quickly after being caught.
