Hi All,

I will be down your way on the week beginning the 15th for the family camping holiday. Staying at the campsite at Normans Bay (Pevensey) so only a stones throw from the beach. Is it worth smuggling the wetsuit and spearfishing gear into the car for a quick dip when the wife and kids arent looking?

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt, I've never dived there but if there's space in the car seems like a shame not to bring it...

grrr, typed a long(ish) entry only for internet to die on me when I pressed Send and lose it all...ok, in summary, I went in this morning, bad viz (1.5m at best), lots of small bass about, didn't catch anything!

Now sailing past Worthing - 1 mile out only 3m deep and viz is amazing - can see the bottom clearly.

That would be telling
Went in again early this morning to a different spot - murky viz. lots of bass about and some big mullet (caught my PB mullet at 60cm)

Thinking of heading to Brighton Pier on Monday night, anyone seen what the vis is like?

Went out this evening to Brighton pier at low tide, visibility not bad at around 3m, no fish though! Work was being done on reinforcing the pillars on the pier so no sure if this had anything to do with it.

Hit a super-secret Sussex dive spot yesterday to take advantage of the conditions.

When I arrived I toyed with not going in because the viz looked rubbish but decided to give it a go anyway.

I didn't even load the gun for a while because there was a SMB from a scuba diver and I didn't know where they were.

Viz was about 2-3 m and milky but as the tide rose it picked up a little to about 3-4m

I was rewarded by the sight of Mr bass...... Who I missed. Fortunately on the next dive there was a shoal of black bream so I took the biggest (my first bream) although he only came in at 1lb 5oz The next dive a 3lb 6oz mullet appeared on the end of the gun just as I was about to come back up.

I've tried to load a pic but it's not letting me.

I stuck around for a while in the hope of another bass to complete my silver line-up but I had enough for tea so left it at that.

I'm headed to torbay for a raid on the west country tonight so hopefully more to come.

I've always been after a bream and now I've got one I just need to work on getting a great big one of 2 lb or so. Still, it's another species!

Eddy, i saw you there, where was the bubble blower who's float was abandoned halfway out???

Eddy, i saw you there, where was the bubble blower who's float was abandoned halfway out???

Yup, that was me!

I didn't know where the bubbler was so I didn't load the gun for about half an hour. It wouldn't do to skewer an angry bubble-blower for tea.

Sorry not to meet you, maybe next time!

Ed.

Trying to avoid the crowds I went in at a new spot. The beach was still rammed. Having left most of my gear in Dorset I was thrashing around in my 9.99 flippers and insufficient lead. As luck would have it there were nice fish around - I missed the biggest mullet I've ever seen and picked up a 5lb bass.

Went in yesterday afternoon – bumped into another spearo on the beach getting in at the same time – nice to meet you. Amazing viz, could spot fish from the surface – pretty rare round here! Saw lots of baitfish, two big shoals of bream (all pretty small), schoolie bass and few bigger ones, some shoals of mullet, etc. Such a difference from last summer!!!
Went home with a 3lb bass, 2lb mullet and 1.5lb plaice.

Yup.................. Such a difference!

That bream was delicious, any more who come near me will be in danger.

Bobandsausage thats a great bass you posted. I haven't seen any around the five pound mark at all yet this season. I guess its just getting going.

I put a report of the weekend dive on the South Devon thread:

Bring on next weekend!

Nice Devon post Ed - good haul. Here's a photo of yesterday's fish.

I went back to my super-secret spot today but found it all churned up with huge waves which suggested to me that almost everywhere was going to be wrecked.

After a bit of poking around the coastline I managed to find calm water at a double super-extra secret spot. The water was flowing past pretty fast but I thought it didn't look up to much so I didn't pay to park expecting to get out!

It was like being in a washing machine and I was headed for the beach when I found a sort of OK spot.

I took the hit on the parking and I'm so glad I did because I had a fantastic morning's sport!

I was fishing between groynes and had a bass take a look at me on my first dive. I missed it because the viz was terrible and I couldn't lift the gun to get it on the fish.

A few minutes later I missed a beauty of a bass which must have been a good 5lb.

I finally got one of 2lb in the bag and missed a few more.

Then, at the last moment a donkey mullet came hoving in to view and found itself on the stringer. (5lb on the nose)

I was trying out the Go Pro hero but all the footage is rubbish because there's no viz.

Its the only time I've ever wished for a shorter gun (I use a 75cm normally).

I think this photo kind of says it:

Plenty of fish and no viz!

I hope this easterly hasn't wrecked the conditions elsewhere.

Tight lines,

Ed
