The outside arm of Shoreham harbour is fishable; the bass are in the holes between boulders. It is frequented by rod fishermen so you have to be diplomatic....When I last fished there I helped a couple of guys retrieve lost tackle and un-hooked a couple lines too. Best to stay on the good side of them as it always has potential of creating bad vibes if you don't acknowledge them. I ended up having a chat with some of them after I came out and explained what I was doing and it was all fine.

i am heading to chichester uni in sept from ireland for a short stay. as we dont have any shops selling spearfishing gear in ireland the opportunity to have a look around a good spearfishing shop would be brilliant. does anyone know if there is any good shops down that way.

my knowledge of english geography is very poor so if chichester is not in sussex please accept my apologies and please point me in the right direction

Hi, the only 'shops' that I know of are not in sussex. Apnea in Jersey ( and thats not a shop anymore more of an industrial unit I think) and what used to be Portland Oceanering. Most of our buying is done on-line. Re the internet you could contact Dan Bailey of the southsea club who runs DKB underwater sports, he sells Piacasso gear and is based in Portsmouth.

The hundredth entry in the Hall of Fame was added today. If you haven't looked lately there are some great new catches.
The Fish of the Month UK is also doing well. Some diverse entries this month. Remember the winner is by popular vote so a novices catch or an unusual fish may well be a worthy entry and even a winner.
Have a check of the rules for HOF and FOM and bare in mind for when you make that special catch.

This site is about as good as a chocolate teapot for info sometimes , i just wanted a no its crap or yes its good, not a reply thats absolutly no help what so ever . We are supost to try and give each other help to get the best from our sport not give sarcastic remarks :vangry
huntfish, it was not a sarcastic remark, it was just stating the obvious. You cannot expect people to tell you what the viz is like, if no one went in the water then how would ANYONE know what the viz is like? If you go and you get good viz its a bonus, if its ***** you know for next time.
Viz at the moment under the cliffs 20ft + we have a saying in our club. You only know if you go! With the Newhaven area it can quite often look chalky but when you get in there may be viz just under the top layer. Just to wet your appetite I had an 11 lb bass on Sat from this area.
I would think the entire south coast was in at least reasonably good shape, esp. with respect to visibility last weekend, as the wind was generally out of the North/NE for several days in a row -- with all of Scotland and England to act as a wind shield. Not much rain before hand. It was largely (very) sunny too where I was Saturday and Sunday (Wessex inland & coast) - as close to perfect as I would dare wish for.
I think this coming weekend looks very promising too - but there is plenty of time for that to change.

Indeed, that is the only way to be sure. There is nothing quite like diving in rubbish conditions for a few years to focus your mind on what conditions might yield good spearing.
But huntfish's request is quite reasonable & sensible, especially with fuel prices being so high/carbon footprints/etc.In the absence of direct feedback, you can often get a rough idea of what vis. might be like from the weather forecasts leading up to the day you want to dive. Prolonged, heavy rain fall inland can wash muck into the sea and cloud things up near outlets, which take a few days to settle. Winds from the land, tend to disturb viz. less than winds from the sea. I could see the weather forecast for last weekend was shaping up for potentially great conditions quite early on - it is usually not that clear cut though.
This coming weekend looks promising (to me at least). You don't need perfect visibility - I prefer a little cloudiness in the water to help hide me.
When obtaining/requesting help/information on the forum, please bear in mind this is entirely voluntary and will only work if we all contribute as well as receive. So please post trip reports, or at least vis. reports when you dive
