Jumped in at Newhaven this am. Not exactly a photo, but sums up what I saw.

Hi Guys!

I'm new to Spearfishing, I have all the gear but no idea! I've been spearfishing in Turkey whilst on Holiday and caught a few grouper but the two trips I've made to Shoreham over the past few months left me not even being able to see my hand!

I'm from near Shoreham, but work away during the week which means I can spear anywhere from Newhaven through to Cornwall.

Anyone thats willing to take an apprentice on would be a life saver as I need some in house expertise!

Regards,

Jamie :D

Reactions: BarnacleBoy
Yesterday in Brighton the rain was pouring, wind blowing, waves crashing against the shingle and Barnacleboy had reported gun-butt viz in Newhaven. And yet the sea had a different colour than of late – darker grey rather than its usual milky greenish brown. Maybe that was just the reflection of the rainclouds. Either way, I had to get in to justify a day of very unproductive DIY. I’d scoped out a new spot at low tide, and leaving my clothes wrapped in three Asda bags in the lee of a groyne I slid down the steep carved out face of the shingle and into the waves. First thought – “wow, the viz isn’t too bad”. Second thought “I feel seasick”. Amazingly the viz was ok – maybe up to three meters, though it dropped off again once the tide (and sediment) picked up.

Straight off on my first dive I saw a flash of silver and a small bass flitted past. The first silver fish I’d seen this year. Bouncing in the waves with spray going down my snorkel didn’t help the bottom times. Even lying on the bottom in five meters of water I had to hold on to rocks to stop being rolled by the waves. A group of three bass twitched past nervously. I lined up on the largest and then on to the stringer. A run of the mill 2lber, but such a great feeling to get the first fish of the year. I hadn’t realised how much half a dozen empty handed fishing trips had worn down my confidence, and the fish gave me a real lift, making me feel much more relaxed in the water and increasing my bottom times. Not that it helped when I caught the disappearing tail end glimpse of a much larger bass – 4 or 5lb. With no time to aim properly I fired off into the gloom and pulled in an empty spear. It’s nice to know that the bigger fish are out there. Neither did the confidence boost help with the seasickness – I threw up into my snorkel.

I saw some more small schoolies as the viz closed in, and a nice mullet swam lazily along my whole backhand side, not more than a meter from me, paying no attention as I tracked the gun round as calmly as possible. But the fish was clocking me all the time - the moment the speartip was almost into line he was off.

All in all a great day, made even better because the two rod and line fishermen on the beach got just as wet as I did and didn’t catch anything.

Thanks gents! Let's keep hoping for better viz so there can be some more catch reports from Sussex instead of the usual "butt-of-gun viz"...

According to forecast by Magicseaweed, it may be Xmass (or Summer) after all :friday

Some descent weather might be coming to South coast in Sussex, starting from this weekend,
... which might allow some descent visibility by the end of next week ... hopefully ?

"Lets begin the Spearfishing Olympics 2012" Hurray !roflrofl

Here's the main fish from Monday- my biggest mullet to date (55cm). There were lots of smaller ones about plus a couple of undersize bass. Good fishing this weekend!

Went out off Shoreham Beach this afternoon, the water was crystal clear! I wasnt expecting much as its featureless but shot a very large gurnard but had my line caught on my weights belt! It was point blank range aswell. Anyway, e got away. After an hr I came across a good sized bass, aimed, pressed the trigger and.... Nothing. Only left the safety on didn't I. After a while I found an old wooden groyne in about 12ft of water there was a group of 3 large bass, went to fire, missed but not only thaty spear came off the line!! Managed to get it though. I will be going out early tomorrow morning to Brighton pier to see what it produces. All in all a very enjoyable first trip!
