Sussex Spearing 2012

... I dont think your brill are actually brill, they are flounders ...

... I guess you’re right Fox, my flaties did actually look more like Flounders,

although very similar to Brill : http://www.mjseafood.com/fishipedia-seafood-guide/species-information/flat-fish/

As for the Wrasse, I want take them anymore, for reasons mentioned above.
I am scuba- and free-diving for 20years,
but this was my 1st fish in UK (started trying last year, but bad luck so far) and I got too excited
...They were not as easy though, Brighton's Wrasse is quiet clever ;)

Unfortunately there is les and less fish around generally,
but more and more "snorkelers" wit spear gun shooting just about anything, regardless of size or species (like silver eels) :naughty

Got desperate and ended up going in at Newhaven this afternoon. Was actually greeted by the best viz I've had there for a long while. Met a couple of spears in the water - nice to meet you guys. So anyone up for a dive there tomorrow? I'm planning on getting there for around 2:30pm. Hoping the viz will still be good - winds are still in the right direction and low...

Oh and got a pollack today, saw 2 mullet but not quick enough to get the gun around. Really enjoyable dive. Looking forward to tomorrow.

So, anyone want to join me?

Nice to meet you too Barnacleboy! yea not bad vis at all, my mate caught a pollock and i came out with a busted gun, the whole thing pretty much fell to bits so im not going out for a while now while i save for a pneumatic!

Im thinking about getting a Mares Jet 58, they seem to be about £99 which doesnt seem bad. I had a 75cm banded gun and a lot of the time i felt it was too long for our vis. Anyone else use here use a Mares Jet? Or know a good place to buy online?

Hi enross,

Must have been a cursed day - my first shot was great becuase it got me my pollack, but it also broke the bungee, leaving me with too much line, so it sagged and could have got caught on shooting :( I had to tuck it into one of the clips at the back of the gun in the end...worked but for today's dive, I have a MacGyver bungee made from an old dell battery strap. :) Must get another proper bungee, but one that will last more than a year.

If you're dry for a while, does your mate want to dive today?

David

Any last minute takers? Sniff...

I'll let you know how I get on - I'll be there at around just past 3pm if anyone wants to join.

sorry mate, havnt had a chance to get hold of him, im about to order my gun but cant decide between mares or cressi!

Back from a 3.5hr dive at newhaven. Good viz again. Came back with a couple of pollock. Missed a mullet by 2cm! Shame, it would have been my first silver. Met another spearo out there.

Well done enross on your new gun. Let me know if you want to meet up for a dive.

Ann I see! Well hopefully my multi prong tip should make them even kinder to my learning spear!

Yes, funny, they're used a lot in France I think, but not so much in the uk...not sure why. I definitely reckon it'll help!

Multi pronged spear heads are not popular because they are quite a specialist tool!
The wieght & increased water resistance limits range to a few feet & very close body shots destroy the fish flesh.
They are used for hole fishing when heads shots on big bass will kill them dead, multi pronged heads are very popular with competition spearos for hunting in holes & zero vis.
Another issue comes from removing the spear from head shot fish.
On the plus side, they make loading low power short airguns very easy!

Re: Dorset Spear Fishing 2012
Went this Friday for night dive to Portland with 2 guys from SFA.
We've got in by midnight for 3 hours drift under cliffs of Chesil Cove.
As on low tide, there was some current, but totally flat sea.
Vis. was in short sections varying from 2-8m, no mater what the depth (max.15m)
Bottom with XL rocks covered with kelp created quiet exiting landscape.

Masses of plankton have reduced visibility at night (with LED-Q5 torches).
However, once switched of the torch,
in pitch black, the plankton created stunning lightning effects.
Every movement of hands or spear gun, created lightning.
I could see my moving arms and gun, just like the night scene in Avatar. ... Amazing!

http://aquaviews.net/explore-the-blue/bioluminescent-plankton-what-makes-it-glow/

I din't expect to see it here. Also in here it was more green, than blue light.

Unfortunately, there was no fish to shoot. Only schools of baby Pollock.

Was it just Bad luck, or wrong spot ???

We couldn't get in harbour, due to Olympics.

Great stuff David - I'm sure you'll bag a silver shortly. I'm back from work next week and can't wait to get back in the water. I've been doing some rod-and-line fishing and to be honest, sort of glad that I'm not spearfishing for these beasts...and to think that I've swum in this river...

well i made my first dive in british water!
my first ever experience was the smallest cutest starfish lying all alone on the sand bed and it was literally the first thing i saw underwater, i thought i was lucky to experience it! then a few mins later as i got further out to sea i started to see more and more of them, some still small and pale, others monstrous and dark, most looking like eerie hands clawing their way out of whatever hole they happened to be stuck in! there were literally thousands of them!!!
the visibility varied greatly, from a meter or so to around 8 meters at a push. it dropped over time also. the first fish i managed to spot, (not including tiny wrasse and small whitebait type of fish) were 2 decent sized bass. they would have both been over a foot in length and certainly would have made good eating. later i managed to spot a pair of huge mullet, easily 2 foot long and definitely the confirmation i needed to bring the gun down next time. throughout the rest of the morning i saw a few more mullet and some unidentified fish that were red in colour, possibly a kind of wrasse? plenty of crabs that were probably too small and a few cuttle fish. i even bumped into a few spearos who caught some of the mullet i found!!! and a brill i think.
all in all a good way to waste a morning away, apart from the barefooted walk home with only a camo wetsuit to wear cos some tosser stole all my stuff of the beach!

Eeek, re the gear being nicked! Where was this? Brighton or Newhaven? Funny, when I first went in at Newhaven I had the same starfish experience - I saw one large one and thought - wow, I've been really lucky...then saw another..then about 20, then hundreds and hundreds!

Bobandsausage - Wow, that is one ugly and angry looking fish!!!! I'm guessing this was on your recent trip?
