Sussex Spearing 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I'm not sure, I'm up in London today, but will be down in the evening.

If the viz is good I'll let you know, but my guess is that all the rain won't have helped.

If the viz is rubbish this evening I'm thinking of going out in my boat for some mackerel - anyone keen?

went out mackereling in the boat for a couple of hours with wwc_gang yesterday evening - brought in a healthy 26 mackas between us.

Got up early this morning to have a go spearing. Viz looked pretty grim but I found one spot that looked ok-ish just west of the marina (more sheltered from the easterlies). When I got in the viz must have been just over a meter at the surface (I could just see the tip of my spear). At the bottom it was half this (i.e. I could see the butt). I swam around for an hour and a half trying different locations waiting for the viz to improve. It got worse. Easterlies are picking up again now... It'll be a good weekend for either:
a. going spearing somewhere else
b. doing something other than spearfishing.

thank god i was in scotland for the week, that place is amazing!! water was 11 degrees, vis was increible, and fish were everywhere!! 6-7 hours everyday in the water of big bass hunting and specimen pollack hunting, along with some lobbies and crab!!

I am officially not talking to you! :D

Seriously, glad you had a good time, sounds like an awesome week you just had!

Was hoping that the drop in the wind would have cleared up the viz a bit by this evening. Not a chance. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

And blowing at 27mph right into the arm on Friday.....I'm struggling to hold back the words..."It's not fair!"

thanks for the update Bboy, this way I wont be tempted to go spearfishing on the weekend and start a fight with the wife(she arrives from Brazil on Friday)

Liam, welcome back buddy, hope you had a good time, post pics if you got'em

I think we need to change our strategy, lets all just hijack a yacht and sail to Fiji. that way maybe we can get some quality time in a water that is not acctualy a bowl of cold soup

I can provide the yacht, if you can provide the skills to get us to Fiji!

But seriously, I'd be keen to go spearfishing from the boat, but it would require other people who can handle boats! Also, anyone know of any sufficiently shallow offshore marks near to Brighton? The boat is nearly 40 yrs old and doesn't have a very speedy engine - quicker under sail, but the days that are good for sailing are usually not great for spearfishing...

if you provide the boat, I'll provide the beer! unfortunatly I'm still learning to sail so I dont know how much help I'd be.

Sea's dead flat but still looking pretty murky. I'll have a crack anyway. At least the football means that the beach is pretty empty!

Beautiful evening, shocking viz. oh to see the tip of my spear. I saw a small crab, a disappearing tail (conger I think), a flash of silver (no idea of species or size) and lots of half imagined shadows and shapes that were the output of my anticipating brain. Still, nice to get in the water. I'll have another crack in the morning if viz improves at all.

"oh to see the tip of my spear" LOL Tried to rep you but I have to spread it around.

Sussex folk don't ask for much...just the tip of spear viz... LOL

Cheers David. And....my wish was answered! Went in by the pier this morning - 1ft viz for the first couple of hundred meters, then there was my speartip! I could actually see about 20cm beyond it too. Amazing. Fish seen: tiny pout, small wrasse and a chunky conger that scared the daylights out of me when he wriggled through the 2 inch gap between me and the sea bed.

Jay came down about lunch time and we went to another spot with similar viz (1.5-2 m). More wrasse, conger and bait fish, but nothing eatable. The easterlies have picked up a lot though - don't know how it'll be tonight.
