Sussex Spearing 2012

Had a great dive on Saturday with Wyvern at Newhaven. Viz was the best we'd ever seen it, at around 6-8meters! Got my first fish (a dab) and then my first shot fish (pollack) so dead chuffed. Wyvern got a better sized pollack and all three were BBQ'd on the beach with some of Wyvern's friends. Great dive all round and you don't get fresher fish than that.

Anyone up for a dive this afternoon after work at Newhaven west arm (the big rocky one)? PM me. Reckon viz should still be great.

Absolutely the best dive of the year so far.. I'm totaly suprised with how clear the water was. Unfortunately I missed out on a decent sized spider, saw him on the way up and then couldn't see him when I went back down.

Big thanks to Marc ( wwc_gang), for taking me along to Bognor Rocks on Sunday.
Finally my 1st dive of the year :thankyou
In the morning on low tide vis was descent around 3m (500m of shore/3m depth), slight current towards east.
I was quiet surprised, how warm the water was ... I was too hot in my 5mm open cell :yack

Not much fish though :(

On second dive afternoon by high tide, the current has changed direction towards west ... very strong current !
Vis went worse to only 1-2m (depth 5-8m).

I was physically struggling with my new longer fins
and new weight setup (4kg Mares Backpack /4kg on belt) was giving me back pain :crutch
I thought Weight on back should be better for spine, but somehow for me it doesn't work :duh
... Anyone has had similar problem with Weight backpack/harnes/baudrier ???

Wwc_gang has scored at least 1 Garfish, Lobster and Spider crab.
... Not just luck, he's good ... and fit, well 16 years younger than me

Looking forward for more trips ... need to get in better shape again :ko
Going on Tuesday to Brighton, probably before low tide, under Palace pier.
Not sure about spearing, but mainly just diving, to get used to new fins.

Great effort gents! Good to see some positive dive reports on the Sussex page. I'm back in the UK in a couple of weeks and can't wait to get diving.

marc, wyvern, david - any photos??

Hi Nick,

Pics coming this evening...when I catch something worth photographing this afternoon! ;)

David

hey david and wyvern, great to meet you yesterday, shame the diving was a let down, hopefully we'll all get in soon. tides looking good for sat morning so il probally head back to newhaven, might try the skelton arm or the concrete arm depending on the current. failing that i may try west pier.
anyone else keen??

It was great to meet you too, I was at newhaven today but after getting ready I realised I forgot my fins...grrr. Hope you have some good luck on sat.

I've dived today under Brightons Palace pier.
Vis on low tide (around noon) was unusually good 5-6m.
Unfortunatelly no fish, perharps due to noisy repair works under pier, carried out from large boat. Later they even have stired up the botom :(

Hey Liam,

Yeah good to meet you too - you were braver than me going in on Monday! I went in today at Newhaven, viz was a fish-able 3-5m. Pretty milky and lots of debris but still do-able. Got 3 pollack that Wyvern kindly filleted for me whilst I got changed (poor chap forgetting fins!). There was a bit of a swell towards the end and viz got worse. The usual Newhaven rip you out to sea current wasn't too bad, but you did need to fin to stay in one place.

Speaking of getting changed - the new cressi technica suit was amazingly warm - just fabulous BUT wow, it's hard to get on and off! I think a little more technique is needed! :) If it hadn't been for Wifey and Wyvern, I think I'd be being found around now, dead on the concrete having suffocated in a straight-jacket pose!

Can't make Saturday as I'm in Dorset, but let's sort something out after the half term holiday (my calendar revolves around kids!).

Hey Liam,

Speaking of getting changed - the new cressi technica suit was amazingly warm - just fabulous BUT wow, it's hard to get on and off! I think a little more technique is needed! :) If it hadn't been for Wifey and Wyvern, I think I'd be being found around now, dead on the concrete having suffocated in a straight-jacket pose!

did you lube it up with soapy water first?? if you properly lube it itl slide straight on and off. i genererally just mix a little washing up liquid or shampoo or something in a water bottle then poor it in, been doing it for years and so far the soap hasnt damaged my suit!! you can however by proper lube if youre worried.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way. Put on my new suit for the second time a few years ago and ripped a foot-long hole up the front of it. Disaster!

Still, if you do this it is easily repaired and the suit has served me well since.

You've just got to be careful with it and avoid jamming your fingernails into the material even when the suit is trying to strangle you(!)

I use a two liter bottle filled with warm water & a good squirt of hair conditioner.

Some black witch glue and blind sticking for you then.Lube up with water and conditioner and you will slip in n pop out the other side! wet your body all over and don't use ya finger nails he says. now where's that glue you've just reminded me of some cold spots in my suite!four little finger holes!

Yeah, probably just not enough. I'm going to take a gallon of the stuff next time. :D

I've got also Cressi Technica 5mm and its pretty tight on my anti-athletic body ;)
Thanks god its very elastic and very warm :)
For wearing it I'm carying 0.33L drink bottle with 10/1 mix of water/shampoo with conditioner (for me works best Head & Shoulders eucalyptus).
That is sufficient to flash inside of both parts of the wetsuit.
Usualy I'm still all soapy even after 3 hours in the sea roflrofl

To remove it, I,m using this trick:
