Torch - anybody use a torch for spearing?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

i read earlier on that huan did not favor NIMH rechargeables as they are only 1.2 V instead of 1.5 V like alkalines.

i have read this on numerous sites..... check it out... (Also NIMH come in 2700mAh now....)

Yes, most definitely. Using 1.2 V rechargeable batteries will have no effect on the use of the equipment. In fact an alkaline battery only benefits from 1.5 V voltage at the beginning of its discharge. Then, it drops constantly to well below 1.2 V. Finally, it drops to around 0.6 V. Most equipment will work happily on anything between 0.9 V and 1.5 V. Unlike alkaline batteries where the voltage drops quickly, rechargeable batteries offer a more constant voltage around 1.25 V throughout the entire period of use.

That is why the latest rechargeable batteries will actually outperform alkaline batteries in equipment calling for a constant and high level of energy input, such as digital cameras, flashes, camcorders, computers, portable phones, CD players, toys, gadgets - well just about anything. :friday

maybe something by surefire is waterproof. they make the (in my opinion) best flashlights, i own 2 of them and will never get rid of them.
 
Surefire are nice, if you've just kicked in a door and are blinding Tango before you doubletap the 10 ring............

(I have a weapon mounted surefire, nice lights )

they have short burn times and are not pressure rated.

my favorite freediving light is the UK C4. small package, very bright, and fairly streamline. my UK LightCannon is nice to, but larger, and eats batteries..... need to get a rechargable cell for it....
 
I bought the UK C8 non recharge.
Have used it with the batteries it came with. Have done 3 hours on these originals.
It's got twin 13 watt bulbs, one spot one flood.
Have bought rechargables and a 20 watt bulb to go in it, rather than using the rechargable cell. Was told that separate batteries might not quite match the cell performance re duration but would work okay.
Let you all know the outcome when the weather warms up enough to start night fishing again.

hahaha i have no idea what youve just said. i think it means you are doing a building raid with an m-16 in hand or something like that. but ok, surefire does not make the best diving torches.
 
bought a tusa tl-240 halogen light yesterday, uses 4 c batteries. a friend of mine has been using one for close to a year now, with no problems, which is what prompted me me to get it.
initial impression.. wow, a lot better than the other dive light i used (a very cheap model, no name brand actually, one O ring, twist the top down to turn it on, used 2 d sized batteries.) The tusa fits the hand pretty decent
(i wont lie and say its a perfect fit, because i shoot the gun with my left hand, and the light was designed to be held with a left hand, so its slightly out of shape in my right hand - it is a very good fit in my left hand though)
feels balanced underwater, has a very good wrist strap, and, will last about 8 hours with the xenon bulb, which i used instead of the halogen (dont need all that blinding light for water 10 feet deep) it is waterproof up to 50 meters, which is overkill for what i do at night (or even during the day!)

complaints about it.

the safety on the light switch is a bit rough on my finger.. well actually not a complaint in the water, because i cant feel it through my gloves, but when im on land, its a bit of a nuisance, but nothing that a light sandpapering wont fix!

its a bit big to mount on my cave gun, most of the caves i shoot stuff in are relatively small in the entrance, and the light would get banged up really bad.

umm..yea thats it, all in all, a great light, i payed $80 bds for it at a local dive shop, thats $40 US, im not sure what they would sell for in other places, but if u take off shipping and the local dive shops profit, i'd say its a pretty decent price for what i got.

I visited Lidls today -- no dive torches ; they had some good regular Xenon bulb torches under "assorted torches" 2.99. Perhaps some seaside locations only, or perhaps next week (although advertised offers for next week seem to be horse blankets, jodpurs & such like).
 
I payed a visit to a local chandlers today & spotted a neat little torch. 6 LED bulbs in a circle with a laser in the middle. Advertised as water proof which probably does not mean submersible? But I think, with a little silicone on the right places, it could survive a dive or two? Any how I am going to mount it on one of my guns. The LED's will light up a cave & the laser will pin point any fish, maybe?
 
Having been using my Power-Led 40 for 4 months, I can attest 100% it rocks! It's so bright that some cracks that I always taught dark are now as bright as bank agencies! Amazing; the best flash-light I ever had, topping the famous small head Faralite (ancient freediving history...)

i was just on the Maglite site, and i think im going to get my hands on one of the AA models. ill try to seal the o-rings beter with silicone or somethings. those flashlights are amazing, i cant see why they cant be used underwater.
 
:hmm A Maglite might work - I bet somebody on the forum has already tried! I think they are anodized aluminium & use (single) O-rings to seal each threaded joint (as my UK dive torch does on its single joint). I pretty sure they don't claim to be suitable for diving though. Might be worth trying one of those little ones they give away free with stuff sometimes.

I had a Pelican Super Sabrelite and it was excellent but I took it in clipped to my weight belt and the clip snapped leaving me with a nice clip but no torch.
They are good torches though and Intrinsically safe if you are worried about that kind of thing.

Lidl's selling rechargeable batteries & chargers next week.

Next week, on sale in Lidls supermarket: rechargeable batteries & chargers, at Lidls usual great prices. (Note: mA/hr capacity of the batteries is almost as much as those sold by 7day on Guernsey (2000mA/hr vs 2300mA/hr).
 
7 day is not my favorite store! we can go direct to the store but are charged the same price including VAT. Guernsey is exempt from VAT

There was a big court case a year or so ago and some of the big electronics firms were complaining about 7day shop.
I think VAT is payable on items over 20 pounds or some figure like that.
 
Speaking of such things, anyone got some good suggestions for a light to mount under the muzzle of a dedicated cave gun? I'm envisioning poking the tip into the cave and turning on the light wwhile my finger tightens on the trigger should something big appear in the glare.
