We're official. Welsh Spearfishing Club

Jaymz - I hope you enjoy your comps. I used to fish ( rod and line ) in coms when I was in my teens. I loved the comps too but seeing the carpark littered with carrier bags full of borderline size whiting is sickening. I'd be interested to know what happens with the spoils of a spearing comp- I'll bet that although the catch will all be removed from the carpark a fair few less choice species find their way into the bin on the way home.

Association majority decision or not, if a spearfishing comp happens in Wales I'll see you all in the car park - I'll be the one with the placard !

I totally agree with you on this. I don't fish Sea fishing comps, I just pier and beach fish now and again, but I know exactly what you means if comps ever come to wales and we put rules in place and something like this happened...I'd be bashing skulls to say the least.

Not a single fish goes to waste, and all sizes are set well above white fish limit, with bag limits as well.

Kkdavids, I don't want you to think I'm bad mouthing the BSA. All have been good to me :) just maybe we need something more to reach across the border :wacky:

Hey I know your not, and I couldn't agree more, it makes complete sense. Personally I think all spearfishermen competitive, social or whatever should be under the same umbrella. As at the end of the day we all share the same passion. We are not big enough in my opinion to be segregated in anyway, as they say safety in numbers (should any regulations etc threaten us again)

Can we try not to divert/hijack this thread from its original aim which was to bring together all the spearo's who fish off our amazing Welsh coast... there are other threads where comp/non comp are dealt with adequately.

Progress so far is going well with around 25 spearo's expressing an interest... keep all those PM's coming and we will create an email group for further announcements/meeting places etc.
We can even give you a cloaked email address @welshspearfishing.org.uk if you prefer to remain anonymous at this stage...

Perhaps we could start organising different area meets? Most of us seem to come from the South so is there anyone from up North or mid-wales in the club jaymz?

Not many northies tbh Artiz but plenty from the south. Hopefully this will sort that divide tho!

I've tried to understand what Jaymzzzzz is stating here. I can't.

Is he stating that he wants comps in Wales, with rules as currently with the BSA ?.

His associated blog has a 'countdown' to the Bognor comp on it !!!.

What is going on here ?

I've quoted him agreeing that I don't like bags of fish dumped in car parks and binned on the way home. I have previously stated I'm entering comps this year :)

With no intention/suggestion/ideas of bringing Comps to Wales ?

It's all about spearo's who fish off the Welsh coast coming together Robbo66... some compete, some don't, some socialise, some don't! We all have the future interests of spearfishing in Wales at heart and by definition that is an association or club for spearfishing off the Welsh coast.
What individuals do outside the constitution of the association is their own concern... as is their membership of the BSA or any other association they belong to. We were hoping that we could create, using a lot more input than we are currently getting by the way, our own constitution which catered for everyone's views, social requirements and organisational convenience? We already have a Welsh spearfishing Twitter feed @welshspearos where spearo's can post visibility pics/reports, set up meets etc but our new web site (www.welshspearfishing.org.uk) will take a while due to it being a voluntary and time consuming task.
I suppose I was hoping that we could all at least put personal differences aside until we had set up an organisation/body which could then formally address and represent what we all clearly want and need?

Let's be under no illusions here a national association/club is a long way off yet but we will never know unless we at least give it a try?

The comps just can't be ethical or be perceived as sustainable ( and nobody give me the old nonsense about 1 spearfishing comp v 1 trawler ). Comps and integrity at at polar ends of the spectrum for me . Angling comps realised this long ago and many now operate on a catch and release basis which is fine and acceptable. We spearos just don't have that option ( perhaps someone should work on a non fatal, spear tagging gun, that way the comp guys could go crazy and marine science could benefit too! )

Anyway, imagine I'm fishing in a comp and I had the opportunity to take a respectful sized fish, say a 4lb bass for arguments sake, or swim to the spot I know I can bag several 10lb pollack - what would I do? I'd never take a pollack normally but what would I do it with the lure of a prize ? I'd not there in the first place but that greed and adrenaline that generated by competition does cloud even the most ethical mind!

So in the interests of inclusivity let me suggest this as a remote possibility:
Comp guys always tell us ethical guys that a comp is all about showing that you're better that the next Spearo and it's not about shooting as many fish as possible- well how about this - The One Shot Comp. Guns modified to only fire once during the session. You could fire once I the first five mins and miss or hold your nerve for hours searching and waiting for the one! Fish would be marked on a scoring basis not necessarily favouring highest weight etc - so maybe shooting a mackerel ( difficult) would score more highly that a large lumbering 7lb bass ( easy ). Maybe even point deduction for poor shot placement- guts bad, stoner or head shot good etc. 5his way the comp guys can really prove who's really got the most skill! Minimum fish landed ticks the ethics box and it could be weighted so that regionally vulnerable species are avoided completely.
