World Series Freediving competition series announced

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Interesting - who's behind WSF?

No typo. CDYN is "Classical DYN" with bifins and flutter kick.

WSF is backed by SSI, though when I talked to one of the owners of SSI, he did not seem to be aware of it, so it may be an independent initiative of the Australian branch.

What I find a bit strange on the website's page "About WSF", is the following sentence:
WSF is “the” World Governing body for Professional Freediving Competitions and Record Sanctioning
WSF did not yet organize their first comptetition and sanctioned no record, but they allegedly already are "the" World Gowerning body for both. That seems a bit strong claim to me.

BTW, this is no big news here on DB - it was already reported a few months ago by Nathan Watts here: http://forums.deeperblue.com/freediving-competitions/94456-freediving-world-series.html

It might be an interesting alternative to AIDA and CMAS competitions, but let's wait first whether there will be more than one event at all.

Agree I noticed that too in 'about wsf'.

I don't see the point in flatter kicking, curved kicking is better

Ps sorry I misread it, somehow thought you had to use dolphin kick with bi-fins but looking at it again, it's the opposite which makes sense

I think a bifins discipline may attract more spearos to these comps.
Oh and a crazy $49 entry fee.
 
I suspect it's just something the organisers of ODEX made up to create interest in the event. I doubt there is any kind of governing body behind it.

I wouldn't be able to compete - not SSI certified! rofl
 
No you dont need to be SSI certified.
I think their are big plans to really compete against AIDA and with better rules and prizes they probably will.
A few years ago no one would have associated SSI with freediving at all.
 
They state you need an SSI or equivalent qualification....

If this ODEX/WSF thing is just SSI wearing a funny hat, why have they chosen a new name for it? Surely it's SSI that wants to compete with AIDA, not this crowd. They've done a rough copy & paste job with the AIDA rules, added a couple of things to attract spearos (bifin events, no packing) and pretended it's part of a wider competition programme to make it seem more legit.

And "no record attempts", whatever that's supposed to mean. Presumably it's a tacit admission they have no actual governing body or organisation behind it that can award records.

I can't see clear definition of the packing. What if an athlete will pack 52 times (like you know who) just for preparation, breath out a little and breath in in the last time again. Definitely this is the one breath only dive rofl
I didn't see any reference to the load either. If they ban the one completely nobody will pack and do FRC. But FRC is not a single breath too. Well, I'm confused.
 

If you ask Mike Wells, I am sure he will know what it's about ;-)

If you see past the marketing talk (world's best, 'the' etc) it looks like at least at present, it's a comp with a slight modified and cut down set of rules to make it more accessible/simple
 


Well basically this has been coming for quite a while. When SSI started their own freediving education "ladder" it was pretty obvious that they at somepoint also will go for the competetive side of freediving, thus creating a complete sortiment of commercial products for freedivers.

Now they can offer a complete ladder for any beginner freediver within their own system.

Don´t know why they wanted to make it a separate from SSI. Although rebranding it as a separate "World Governing body " is pretty smart.
 
Strange disciplines. What is the difference between "Speed Apnea – Confined Water - Pool" and classic finswimming 50m apnea?
 
Yep - much.

Packing may not be allowed, but luckily there's nothing to prohibit doping or supplemental oxygen, so performances should remain high.

I'll be at ODEX, so I might see if I can finally set that elusive 15 minute static.

LOL they clearly have ambition, but they also have much work to do.

Pitty they seen to be shy to say who's organising this.

Another question about their rules, is one allowed to do noseclip only dives? and what about diving without any facial equipment?
