I think Martin/Herbert/Carlos (and maybe a few others including Eric) already have the ability to do a 150m VW, it's just a matter of doing it.
I'de expect the 300m dynamic to be broken before the 300m no-limits, though with Patrick's new revelations who knows...

The deepest variable weight dive ever was 145m by Gianluca Genoni of Italy, on a failed no-limits dive when the primary and secondary lift bag mechanisms failed. He wasted 30 or more seconds struggling with the lift cylinders before finally abandoning them and ascending under his own power. Apparently he blacked out around 5m below the surface.

He reported inhuman narcosis after spending so long at that depth, then actually working hard and generating CO2 at such tremendous pressure.

Of Alun's list of barriers, only the 10-min static hasn't been done officially (yet). Even 9-minutes hasn't been done officially!

Nonetheless, in addition to 150m VW, I think that a 300m DYF and 300m in no-limits will be accomplished in the next 10 years....

why doesn't Tom Sietas' 10.08' count?

Like in any other sport we need a "controled environment" for this. Training results never count.....thought 4 me; they show what is possible in near future. The 9" was done officially in VC (9:24); if not for the red card for touching coach.

Pim,

The 9'24" in vancouver had several things which made it 'unofficial'. I don't necessarily agree that they should have made it unofficial.

1. WR attempts outside a competition need to be announced 1 month in advance
2. Sunglasses
3. Touching by coach

etc...

Hmm....

I wonder what else is up Patrick's sleeve other than a rapid descent and short bottom time? The tone of the report on his website is jubilant, as it should be, but I wonder what kind of resistance or opposition he has had to his planned record above and beyond natural skepticism. After all, isn't it reasonable to expect someone who has never done more than 120m to have some difficulties in adding 80m to that depth?

Also, I understand how annoyed he would be if people were telling him he was attempting the impossible. But I think for those of us on this thread, we just want to understand his method (I assume he isn't referring directly to us).

It leaves me cold! But you should visit the net ask that to all the so called experts and physiologist wanna be who insulted me and criticised me during this past year. They all came with their own theory reproducing once again history by saying such a progression was impossible. 99% of the world was wrong, that is MY victory! My trachea and my lungs are still intact and not injured like they all claimed it would. For them, my training concept is new, not to me, nor to my dear beloved. In the past no one has ever asked me how deep I could go in the other categories and why I didn't go deeper, they all sticked to the facts and figures. I am not doing that to prove that I am the deepest, but I am so delighted to show the world how the small kid from Kinshasa grew up far from the sea, came to their diving world like a boxing champion and stood up for his believes to finally succeed to challenge their experts and all their scientific theories. Maybe now they will understand that it is not necessary to come with pages of physiological datas to understand freediving. Just dive it!

The only understanding that I would look forward to was how he avoided barotrauma of lung and trachea with such a rapid progression. Gym training?

I have greatest respect from Patrick and his performances. The tone in his comments remind me a bit of Jacques Mayols statements. Very pathetic. As if he was not of this earth (well is he?). And just like Jacques back then who passed 100m he might prove the world (and even better the best freedivers and physiologists who think they understand so well) that 200m is not an unachievable or lethal depht. There are also parallels about the Training Secrets. Jacques didn't like it when opponents (and that's what it was like back then) knew about his training methods. Although I think Patrick will let us know how he prepared himself. I am very very curious about it!

(I'm sorry I start getting jubilant myself- I am so excited :hmm )
