A competition you can't miss... Oktober 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
The CMAS part of this competition is now full, but there are still places left for AIDA athletes. Many of the big guns have confirmed, and you can see a list of some of the athletes who will attend at the official site

Can you tell us how will CMAS calculate points for static and dynamic?

*** Ok, I found it, so CMAS will give 1pts for each 2sec and AIDA will give 2pts for each 5sec! That's interesting.... One more thing do, I can't fin that in list on the official page.

Wow what a list of names!
Tom, Stephane, Stig, Peter, Henning, Carlos, Patrick, Herbert, William Winram, William Truebridge, Natalia Molchanova, Natalia Avcheenko, Mandy-Rea! What a line-up!
I'm sorry to say but I don't know the CMAS divers yet, but I love to see and follow their performances and get to know their names too.

I'm missing our Dynamic record holder Dave Mullins, and more women attending!
Go Elisabeth!

I got the impression it will be coverd on the regular main stream sports tv, not extensively, but just a few small blurbs. Because of mayor commercial backing and the before mentioned extensive professional cameracrew. The region overview video is a real slick professional piece using al the psycholiguistic latest buzzwords.

I hope there will be a few good presentators to comment and explain the uneducated audiance the beauty and challenge of freediving.

Maybe a nice job opertunity for Sebastian Naslund?

May it be an exiting competition!

Kars

The most surprising (at least to me): Patrick Musimu and Stéphane Mifsud! I thought those two were quite reluctant to participate on any AIDA International events!

I am little bit surprised that the main prize is only 1000€ - it does not even cover the cost of the participation. I thought it would be rather on the level of the Dubai static competition where the prizes were at least about ten times higher if I remember well. And unlike here, also the second and third competitor received a very nice prize. Well, let's be happy with this one as it is - it's definitely better than nothing at all :D

WOOOW, all the BIG names on one place, hope Dave will come to, and some other guys that are missed, but this is really fantastic, finally we have all big guys on one place, head to head, this is by my opinion the strongest freediving competition in history! I can't wait to see it and I feel great privilage to be thare and compete against them.... great.

I won't be going I'm afraid, it was enough of a struggle finding the time and money to come to Egypt! I'll watch with interest though, I expect there will be some big performances in both disciplines.

Fair enough Dave! Regarding static points, can someone provide closer explanation of that? The point system I found is... well, at least strange...

CMAS 1pts for 2sec

AIDA 2pts for 5sec

When you are already in Egypt, it is just a short jump to Italy, so just stay in the corner until October. The main prize will pay at least for part of the cost. And I am pretty sure you'll get enough offers from fellow freedivers where to spend the extra free time, including free accommodation and training opportunities. Would be beautiful to really see the fight of the Titans without missing probably the most important one!

It would be nice (at least for me and other fellow Czechs) to see also Martin Stepanek, although pool disciplines are not his favorite ones. But I guess he cannot let FIT at the ice for several months.

About the "Star List", they don't say they will participate, they just say thay are "champions".

It would be a fantastic trip (I might finally get to dive in the med...) but unfortunately I'm already stretching my employer's patience with the leave I'm taking for WCs.

As for prize money covering costs, I expect it to be the Sietas & Mifsud show with maybe a bit of Severinsen. If they hold the comp again next year, maybe I can start working on my statics!

Is the weighting of static points in favour of the CMAS athletes due to the fact that CMAS does not hold static competitions, and therefore that their athletes are at a disadvantage?

The AIDA part of the competition will of course follow the AIDA rules.

...even for the points in static. 0.2 points every second.

/B

ps. I hope Alexey M will be there as well !!!

Take the work with you! Or help the employer to expand to Europe! I do not know what's your profession, but with all the contacts you can have through freediving, it is well possible you can find some business opportunities for your job, which may pay better back for them than having you there.

haha, Dave's employer is the NZ government, so unless we invade Europe it will be difficult to expand there ;-)

All of the champions listed on the site have been invited. I know most of them have confirmed (Severinsen, Molchanovas etc), but I don't know about Mifsud yet. If you are looking to attempt a PB, NR or WR these are probably the best conditions (DNF, DYN or STA) to do it in, as the pools are quick, and the perfect depth.
There are still 30 places open for the AIDA comp.

Hmm, an invasion eh.... I wish our airforce hadn't sold the last of its planes. But our two frigates might give them a run for their money!

Back subject, Yes Alexey would be cool there too!

Maybe we can start a poll when the list of champions is complete and vote on who we expect to be the winners?

Love, Courage and Water,

Kars

There should be another field mentioning the champions that are confirmed, or to avoid misleading, only show those that are really confirmed.

They will have to get past our two boats in the Irish Navy first. (thats just a joke we actually have 8 boats)

It will be interseting to have the two bodies together in a comp who knows this may be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Can someone tell me how will CMAS calculate static points?

I doubt that 1pts per 2sec is correct.
