Cray season!

Hi, the crays are probably looking forward to thier break here in the Cape. A (biker) in Rooiels told me that the long weekend days are considered "weekend" in terms of catching crays, ie: tomorrow is like a Saturday. My papers and references dont mention this. Any comments to this from the bench?

weekend as in when most people are out caatching them I know I plan on doing some bug hunting this long w/end but Im up here in dbn

At this time in the season here in the Cape, restrictions permit catching between 9am and 4pm on weekends only. (I see chaps with ring nets throughout the week though) I'm trying to find out if there is any substance in a comment that public holidays (such as Easter) are regarded as weekend days as well.

I think your season starts at about the same time as ours closes. Ill be in Zinkwazi soon! We dont have eels sharing crayfish holes :)

Hey, you may dive kreef on weekends and public holidays.....so friday , saturday, sunday and monday are all legal....just stick to the 9am-4pm limit :)

I can confirm that, I phoned the department last year and they said public holidays are open.:)

Well I think i better go grab my last quota for the season on Monday, (some friends have been hounding me for kreef pot and paella´s). I think i´m gonna try soetwater.

I in two minds. Cos, are we gonna be able to shoot anything cool? I spoke to a guyatthe belville club who didn´t really sound that optomistic about north paw. I mean with Dassen there was a chance at shooting Gallie and Yellowtail. I should be able shoot hotties off a shore dive. I know that it would be an awsum exprience spending the day on that boat, but have you seen the state of my suite.:crutch I was thinking maybe putting that R300 towards a nice new suite. I don´t know.

Wow, its blowing like mad here! (where it never blows) in Stellenbosch. Windfinder tells it'll be stronger in the morning. Seeing that conditions are likely to be generally crap I'm going to cross the boerie-curtain to Kommetjie instead. I've never dived there. Theres water and kelp so....? I'll be there at around 10-ish. and on my own. I'm going for kreef and alikreukel but I'll take guns along too. if you're keen so am I - 0762846951. :wave

it's predicted to blow an Ese with a large but gradual Sw swell, so a first aid kit might be a good idea if they break and you want to climb out on a rock. but its spring low too.:)

Well, now I've dived Soetties and Kommetjie. I was impressed by the vast selection of miniture crays available there! I saw nice Gallie but had left by gun back in the kelp because it was a real mission to drag it along. On the outside of the kelp things cleared up and I found quota. (but just size) then I almost had a ski boat give me a haircut. Getting in again was rough, I was buggered after the Soetties dive.:crutch

Im sure in better conditions this place is great.Today Im off to hangklip.

yup, soeties is tiring work, too much work to drag ur gun along. I have actually decided that I wanna start diving off a paddleski at soeties it will make life a million times easier!

Also the kreef in soetwater are in very specific areas. Local knowledge is key. I literally know of areas that are less than 20 square meters, where all the big boys are. If you dive 10m to the right or left you will find nothing! These spot are discovered through many, many dives in the area. If I need to get my quota quickly there are few tried and tested places, if I have time, my buddy and I explore. Soeties is a huge place!

When all is said and done, it really doesnt compare that well to other places, as far kreef size and accessibility is concerned. And yes there are plenty of fish, but 80% of the time, it is to murky or itś not worth dragging your gun all the way to the back! The only reason i have dived it so much is that I lived in fishoek and it was 10mins drive from home.

Hey Jim I want to go get some kreef on Monday do you want to join me. Maybe on the way back just want to pass smits in case there are yellowtail running.

That sounds like a great offer. I was back at Pringle yesterday. The viz was terrible but the sea was flat. A bit like what you say about Soetties is true there too...you just need to know where to look. I had the place to myself.

Today looks perfect but Ive other landbased stuff to take care of :vangry.

Lets watch Windfinder etc and see this evening where to go. yesterdays...

Nice kreef, where did you get those?

Today looks a bit windy down my side, what do you think?

Hi Lenny. THose came from Hangklip. (past the lighthouse). I was there again this morning but the waves were too big in the low tide. I went in at Pringle slipway instead. Not great but fetched what I needed in a few minutes. Bad viz and a bit bumpy. I had to get back home early for some work unfortunately. This coming weekend perhaps? on my drive back, I saw some guys coming up the coastal road nead Groendakkies with full goodie bags.
