WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I haveńt shot one yet either! The crazy thing is that Allen was at his house at Smitzwinkel and he told me that the trekkers where pulling it in by the ton. So on monday i planned to make a mission, but I couldńt find anyone to dive with me.:head:head:head, thought of perhaps spinning for them off the rocks, but eventually i laased the idea.:(

We really need to make a plan! Ive got a buddy with a rubber duck that might be able to take it out one weekend.

sounds shweet.....if u know the spots etc....anvil rock is apparently pretty good..
dont think theres gna be any diving this weekend...Jeff said theres meant to be some SE swell coming, false bay is a mess so is atlantic side..

Hi guys, got wind the bay is FULL of tail at the moment, they're in spawn so won't be taking for the fishermen, but I'm sure they'll take on 7mm of steel :)
PS : Just remember Anvil now falls within the new MPA,but Bellow's is still allowed.
Sunday weather light Northerly and swell dropping a lot,if report is good on Saturday evening,I'll be out there !

Woah, according to windfinder it really is gonna die down, and even more so on Monday!!!!!

Hey Cape Spearo, do you have your own boat? Where exactly is anvil anyway?

Doesn´t anybody want to come with me on Monday !?:waterwork Come on Sean where are your contacts with boats. This is an emegency! You can call in sick, after all you will be if , Faizy shoots another 10 of those, and you don´t have a single fish to show for the whole season! hehe:t
Worst comes to worse we can borrow a friend´s crocaduck with a 20hp motor., which he offered to me, see what we can get in Smitz.

Hi Lenny,
Yes I do have a boat (which by the way is a hole in the ocean you pour money into :) ).
Anvil lies within the 2nm boundary set by kortbroek. It's NE of Bellow's Rock.
Bellow's though is a great place for tail and Bonnies when the water is right, just follow the birds or watch the finder .............

Hi Lenny. If you do go out to Bellows...Go with someone who has got a lot of expirience.Current diving around Bellows can be difficult if you do not know.Capespearo I agree a boat is very exspensive........

So whoś going?

Faizy do you think Louis might wanna go on Monday? He is quite experienced right?
Oh and by the way, how many kgś was that one and where did you shoot it?

Cape Spearo- if you want to go out on Monday iĺl be more than happy to contribute to petrol or whatever you might need.

Just out of random interest: Are bonnies solitary fish or do you find them in groups?

Bonnies are like tail ....they swim in schools..Also be carefull these fish atract big whites.I would suggest do a boat dive if you shoot these fish

No jokes about the whites, and they are also quite agressive as these fish are fast swimmers and move very erratically in the water. Perfect ingredient to make a white go heywire

Bonito are shoaling fish, but swim in much smaller schools than tail.Faizy is right, they are Tuna family and bleed a lot,and those big fella's in the grey suits love the smell of tuna blood.
Bonito are the best sushi I have eaten ...............

ok, i get the point. But am i the only one here that has an insatiable desire to go shoot some tail?

Hiya

Just another stupid law to make spearo's live's miserable!! Take note, if you launch at Millers Point, you have to stay 2nm away from shore until you get pass the point. Its illegal to be closer than the 2nm distance with any spearfishing gear on board. Pretty much makes Smits un-divable by boat and makes boat launching at Buffels also illegal......:rcard:rcard

honestly, i think the people who make rules like that should be dumped in the middle of smitzwinkel baai with a couple of bloody fish strung up to them, and then we could see how long they last without a boat!

I really cant understand why the government targets spearfishermen.
We are the smallest fishing community in the Cape. We are also the most limited and restricted not only are we limited by the strictest official rules and regulations, bag limits, sizes, method of capture and fishing areas. But we also have to deal with other factors and restictions that other fishermen don´t. We are restricted by weather, more heavily than any other fishing, we are restricted by vizability, we are restricted by physical boundries of depth, current and distance. It is definately the most taxing and skillful form of fishing. Not only do we have to dive deep, swim far and hard. But we also have to compete with the life threatening great whites, which other fishermen don´t. And now they trying their hardest to stop Spearfishing of boats. Besides the fact that we have a very small community of divers who are very restricted by natural and government factors we are also the most sustainable form of fishing. It is the only type of fishing that has absolutely no by-catch, or accidental captures of un-targeted, or undersize fish or juvenile fish. In comparison to skiboat angling, treknetting, and commercial fishing, the enviromental impact of spearfishing is nearly nonexistent! I just don´t see where they find there the basis to make laws against spearfishing. Why are we the scapegoat? Itś absolute bull@#$!

Ended up diving Dassen Island on the West Coast after receiving reports that the tail had moved on and the water in the bay was cold ............ but not as cold as Dassen ! After 10 mins in the water I could barely pull the trigger :)
Water was clean though and we got a couple of nice size Hottie's to around 2kg.There were at least 4 other spearo boats out there as well,so it seems we weren't spoilt for choice due to the weather.
Best part of the day was seeing a small snoek (around 500g) swimming with a school of baitfish about 1/4 his size, tried to get the camera to film it but they had moved on by the time I got organised.
Was back home at 1pm and didn't have to clean the boat as we had a bonus huge downpour on the way home.
