You could, but he will put a rabitech barrel which will cost a lot more, plus you will probally be charged for the labour of undoing and fastening two screws. Christies sells SA freediver stuff, which is really good value for money.

Hey Calliecal - a typical pool session starts off with a couple lengths just swimming normal freestyle on the surface to warm-up and get a feel for how you're feeling (we not doing max performances on a normal day, so its fine if heart rate goes up a bit - actually its nice to get the muscles working a bit) followed by some dynamics, and then afterwards, statics in the kiddies pool : ] Depending on the day, we'll play around with surface intervals, distances etc. Most of the time we're not pushing it, but we always keep close eye on each other for safety.

Also, we try focus big time on technique and play around with streamlining underwater etc...

Generally no rules of what to do - just the 'getting in/doing' part is what matters most!

What do you guys do in your pool sessions... I'm looking for fresh ideas

Have you tried underwater hockey, For me it is the most fun and exciting way to improve your bottom time/lung capacity, cardio/fitness, and your swimming strength.

Thanks for the tips and info. Going to give it a bash in the pool next week - diving this weekend if the weather and vis holds!

One thing I'm really struggling with at the moment is my fin stroke. It just doesn't feel right. My buddy reckons it doesn't look right either :) Apparently my left leg breaks away and doesn't complete the stroke properly.

My buddy reckons I might need a less stiff pair of fins cos I'm only a girl... and a short one at that.... so maybe the little pins aren't strong enough. I got the fins as a result of an insurance claim so didn't have much choice in the matter... I can't really afford another set so am considering some leg strengthening exercises but I don't know any which is a minor problem. Any ideas?

Funny you should mention that.... I started playing underwater hockey last Wednesday. What a jol! Was in the pool with springbok and international players first time out and they were super cool about having a 'floater' around. I managed a dash for the goals and one cool pass but that's about as good as I got. An hour and a half of solid hockey was a pretty interesting intro to the sport.

Went again on Monday but it wasn't quite as nice as the Wed before. Perhaps because we played with smaller teams and I had to sub with other floaters. I got pretty cold and bored waiting around. Definitely think I'm more of an action type of person. Managed to get myself a "Good job!" comment from one of the other girls which obviously left me feeling pretty chuffed :)

Will definitely be back tho!

Lenny, how long have you been playing for and you still at it?

Fo some reason the Bellville club does not practice in winter, so I'm waiting for the new season. I got into it in last season so i'm still quite a noob and fairly unfit. But for me freediving exercises bore me to death and this is a whole lot more fun. The Bellville guys are fairly relaxed, not too competitive, we just play with whoever is there, when we do sub, we switch players after every goal, so it is actually very welcomed breather after you have killed yourself with the previous goal.

It is a pretty addictive sport, that's for sure! I'm out for this week as I seem to be getting a chest infection. Gonna rest so I can dive on the weekend.

I find I keep being too polite and apologetic! Meantime the other chicks just swim straight through me. It takes me at least half an hour to get the confidence up to get in there and go for the puck and when I do that I do quite well. It's the half-arsed attempts that make me look like a real fool!

I'd like to learn more stick skills tho, so I can do a bit more once I do get the puck. Guess I'll learn as I go.

I went back to some old training schedules I have from my rowing days and am going to give some of the circuit training (basic home-made stuff) a bash to increase my general core fitness. I have been something of a lazy lout in the last 3 - 4 years and should do something about it. I think it will help control my asthma a little better also.

Maybe there is something to this healthy lifestyle thing after all...

Happy birthday Lenny... seems the ocean gods got that last wish mixed up and granted you monster seas instead :)

Hope you have a fabulous day regardless!

It's very quiet in here lately? I'll take the opportunity for a bit of a shameless self-promotion. I've just opened an online t-shirt store :) The closest thing to a freediving t-shirt right now is this one for the ladies: Puffin, Puffout

Feel free to suggest ideas for a real freediving t-shirt.

Just had an amazing dive in a spot that I drive past almost every day, but never bothered checking out. We went in just north of the Clan Stuart and made our way towards Glen Cairn.

Saw the following: tons of perlies, two types of shark, lots of alikrekel, octopus, lots of hotties, lots of butterfish, other smaller fish, some weird squid type thing that swims like a ray, big crabs and all manner of smaller creatures.

The reason I checked out this spot was because of the poacher who was busted with a bag full of kreef that he poached at Glen Cairn (and was selling it to the Chinese restaurant there. They had freezers full of poached abalone and kreef). I figured there might be be lots of kreef there and wanted to recon it for next season. Anyway, I didn't see a single kreef, but the dive was awesome anyway! Looks like a great place for spearing. Lots of drop offs and gullies! Next dive will be Glen Cairn swimming north towards Fish Hoek.
