good to hear the fish are out there, only had the good fortune to see/hear them so far myself but I'm only on my 4th dive of the season. As regards to noise attracting fish -- I've experimented a lot and with bass I have found 2 things that seem to work but only on occasion. The first is this famous throat noise you hear that is very hard to get right. I've had 1 9lb odd bass come straight towards me in 3M depth during aspetto and several shoals of schoolies too using this technique. I'm still finding it is better to be perfectly silent combined with other techniques to land them though.

The 2nd isn't noise related at all but if you're hiding in the kelp then try waving it side to side or from back to front very, very slowly and you might be pleasantly surprised what comes by to investigate.

I got a nice surprise from this bream (2.2K gutted) by making a small cloud of sand after riffling my fingers through it on another occasion and I'm not ready to give up with the noise just yet :martial

playing the guitar with your bands is only good for chunky wrasse and will scare off anything else in the vicinity though (in these waters anyway).

Dived Swanpool today....murky as you don't like and cold aswell.Saw a couple of mullet early on which i let go and that was it.Managed to somehow snap my omer ice fin blade in line with the screw holes so the only noises i was making in the water were generally obscenities which proved fruitless in fish attraction.Bugger it!

...However, bass are said to be attracted if, when you start your dive, you give a gentle slap with your hand to the surface of water. (I guess it must imitate the sound of an escaping prey)...

The same principle as "popper" lures perhaps?

Bad luck Badlander -- Omer Ice are famously guaranteed for 3 years, let us know how you get on claiming. (Can you get Ice on the mainland or only from Jersey/EU?).

Haven't seen them over here anywhere......Sent the blade off to Apnea and they reckoned they'd have to see what Omer thought regarding the waranty.Guess they were happy that i wasn't out sawing them in half because the new blade is on it's way to me now!...hoorah!Apparently it was the frist breakage they'd seen of the the ICE polymer...just my luck!....

Good to hear they stand behind their product (at least so far); I would have been surprised if they hadn't. Was pleasantly surprised at how good retailers in the USA were about such things - they always replaced or refunded, no quibble. They realise their good name/reputation/"brand" is valuable. Thankfully it seems to be much more common in the UK now too...we pay enough (time for a reduction in VAT?).

Watching the Babbacombe webcam this morning -- it looks amazingly flat given the winds elsewhere. Saw a guy casting off the pier.

It was smooth last time we were there but we still couldn't see anything :head

As a follow up to my Newquay dive...I had a look for somewhere new on the South Coast near St Austell. Lets say after a surreal shower under the waterfall, I walked off this beach with a few fish...

Guys, the vis was variable 2-3m but the few bigger bass we saw thump off (easy 5lb+) were very spooky. The submarine mullet on the other hand were not quick enough as well as a couple of smaller bass 2.5lb & 3lb. The big mullet loved that rocky stuff right on the shore and I found myself pulling across the shallow rocks at times. The bass were lying in wait on the heads of reef to the left of the camera phone pic. Did somebody say Lobster?:t
If you want to go and have a look its called Hallane Beach/Black Head/Trenarren....hardly think a bunch of spearos are going to strip it of fish before I go again!rofl
P.S. Normal parking is quite a walk away, so I suggest the fittest mate shuttles the car to the bottom and drops his gear and shoots up for the car on return.

Neat place. I was there a couple of years ago. Apparently they used it in the Onedin Line TV series. There was a handy beer garden on the way back to the car too. If I recall correctly (?) I think there was a small beach to the left of the harbour -- anybody tried spearing around there?

Hi guys has any one ever bought any spearfishing gear from subprof? Ordered new gun,fins,knife etc on april 17th and although they took my money on the 20th i am still waiting for my order!!!!!:rcard E mailed em bout 7 times and got 2 replies eventually. Anyway should be getting it all tomorrow [yippee] but now ive said that it will probably get lost:t. Anybody know what forecast is for this weekend? Hopefully i can try OUT my knew gun etc. That spot up St Austell looks good,might try down Lands End way tho,had a tip off from an old sea dog.

yep I was there a year or two ago on my boat. SAND SAND AND MORE SAND. Best use it as a starting point and get across to black rock

Dived near Coverack this morning.Wind was more from the SW than i would have hoped for but it was okay.Vis was surprisingly good after all this rain and weather at 3-5m+.]
It was a new spot for me so i spent a while just finning up the coastline a bit and the terrain started getting better.Saw some mullet and took one and the biggest spider crab i've ever seen.Left him be though.Started getting cold and headed back straight across the bay but no bass whatsoever.
Good to get back in though.

I've fished San Sebastian in Northern Spain; tidal, rocky, ever-changing viz, all-in-all just like south-west UK with slightly different species, Some very good local spearos about and a couple of good clubs.
