sure does look look like a big surf week,at long last!Checked the met office pressure charts though and that doesn't show anything too menacing.I bet it'll be a more conservative size closer to the mark.One things for sure though it'll churn up all the exposed beaches.Been suffering from a hideous bad back which has meant no diving or surfing,gutted as it actually got over 4ft for the first time in far too long.Ah well.
Finished work early today and found myself at a loose end so packed up my gear and headed down to the Lizard after hearing the dive centers reporting 8m viz inshore. Well i got about 3m viz offshore but to be fair it did look a little clearer further in! It was a good trip. Very relaxed so my dive times were quite long and relaxed and the surface times short. I was paid off with 2 bass. One about 3lb and the other i am not sure, 4-5lb? I dont have any way to check how big he was but he is a good size. Makes the 3lb'er look small. He put up a hell of a fight even though he had just recieved my spear thru his head! I used my fins as a guide in the photo.

Update on the vis......
I was in at the south coast on the high tide today in a sheltered bay in the lea of the wind and swell. Vis was patchy but certainly fishable (upto 4m). Not very fishy though. Some flighty schoolie bass around but nothing really worth putting in the pan.
Even though I was sheltered from the weather it was very windy and I became preoccupied with sorting out my float. Lesson learned though - will just have to do without in future if the winds are that strong (winds were onshore by the way, in case any of you think I have lost my marbles).
Conditions are set to worsen through the week but hopefully fishable again at the weekend. Anyone out there found any vis on the north coast?

Hey everyone.. I'm new on here and stoked to find a forum with a load of Cornwall based spearos 
Been looking at the charts loads recently and struggling to see any good vis oppurtunities with all the rain and swell we've been getting recently.. maybe this weekend south coast?
I live in Newquay and good vis on the north coast has been few and far between recently.. I'm so keen to get in this weekend and bag a good sized bass but I never know whether its worth the drive to the south coast.. is there any way of checking the vis.. diving companies I guess.. any ideas who I could ring?
Also, I took a trip down to Helford passage recently.. just took the rods and the boat and caught a nice bass a bit further north.. does anyone know how far into the estuary you'd be allowed to legally spearfish? - I was told that it's a bass nursery and that there must be some rules in place?

I am based over at Carlyon Bay on the south coast so could give you a pointer on visibility - just PM me. I have been off work all week and am gettign a little p£$&*ed off wth the weather as the wife and kids are away for this week! I am going to put the gear in the car on Friday and take the spotting scope and drive the coast road past the Dodman to see if there is any vis!
As far as dive companys and asking about vis....if you check with Looe Divers - just ask for John Bass the owner (good name, but John doesn't spearfish! they will let you know what the situation is in their dive areas around Looe.....Just say Rich Mercer said to speak with him (that's me).

Just a quick note to say I have walked the dog on the cliff path ths morning and the report is as follows.......Mirror Flat Calm on the south coast...YIPEEE. Vis appears 3m+ although it may be better in places - last day B4 the weather breaks and the wife and kids come back.......Guess today is the day for the dive then. Must go wetsuit is beckoning!

3m+... Happy Days.. That has cheered me up no end.. wish I could get in today too.. but it looks like tomorrow and sunday is gonna have to be the days for me.. I just hope these winds that are forecasted don't stir it up too much!
