Got in a low tide at maenporth looked ok but got in and the vis was poor again lots of bloom in the water nice ton be in though and to get some practice in

Guys I just thought I'd let you know that there s a mega dive fest on at Pentewanat the moment so if you were planning on diving around here it will be very busy with hundreds of soda streams!!! with a lot of newbs.
May be safer to move elsewhere.

Yeah, I had a murky dive in Falmouth today. Not the best, in fact quite depressing. May have to wait for the Easterly to blow the bad vis out of the bay so we can start all over again. All the milky vis, fluffy brown algae clumps, tiny jellyfish, and other stuff in suspension are doing my head in. Looked at Maenporth but could not be arsed.
Is it normally like this in May????

Took a drive down the Lizard and planned to dive a spot that requires a long trek but with all this talk of poor vis decided not to risk it.Settled on a dive at Porthallow.
As i arrived there was someone suiting up for a spear which turned out to be Pav.
Had a good chat and both got in and headed in opposite directions.Vis was actually alright, probably 5m in places. A lot of mullet around and took 3 within about an hour.Headed back to the beach and spotted two very pale bass over the sand which bolted after i finally spotted them.Decided to give the other side a quick look as i was getting really chilly but was determined to get a bass.Luckily had two swim by on a drop and got one on the belt.
Got out and met up with Pav who'd seen a few fish but had not been so lucky.After a coffee and fat chewing i decided to give it another go for an hour since it looked so fishy.Saw a few mullet but during a drop i had trouble equalising and suddenly felt really dizzy as something tweaked in my inner ear.I've had this happen before,sometimes when i blow my nose and a few times whilst diving but it's passed quickly and i've just carried on.This time though it stayed with me and i was aware that i was a bit off kilter.As i got out it was pretty difficult to walk straight as i headed back to the car and if i turned my head left or right i'd fully spin out.It was as if i'd just spun around for a bit.Anyway, i had to get back so i started driving but realised it was going to be tricky.Then i started getting really bad motion sickness and actually had to stop the car at one point and dry heave.Managed to get home without incident and got some ear drops in there and lay on the couch.After an hour or so i was pretty much okay again. Had me pretty concerened for a while there though as i wasn't sure if it was going to be a long term thing.
Can't really put it down to anything other than the pretty poor state of my ears due to surfers ear but don't fully understand how it would affect my inner ear.I think i read of someone else having this happen to on here.Anyone else had a similar experience?
The ear in question was being a little difficult to equalise during the dive but wasn't too much of an issue until it went weird.
So, alright now but i think in future i'll be more cautious of sticky ears.
Nice to meet a fellow DB'er though and hope Pav got lucky (felt a bit of a dork being called Badlander away from my computer though!) other than the ear thing,a pretty good day.

Yeah, I have had the same thing in the water - I call it a spinner and for me it is where one ear has equalised properly and the other has not so they feel like they are at diffent pressures. It is usually only very temporary and I only have to re equalise at the surface and all clicks back to being ok.
Recently I was have a lot of cracking and popping in my ears and a few days afterwards I started getting a slight vertigo at work. It happened many years ago after a knee reconstruction operation and it turned out to be an inner ear infection. I took a few sea sickness pills and all was ok, although I did develop a real stinker of a cold whch is what it might have been all along.
Try the sea sickness pills if you are ok with them.

Hi Badlands, great catch (a good sign the bass are coming) but unfortunate about the ear incident. I'm not a doc but have heard about dizziness after surfing/diving; in some cases it can be a sign of a perforated eardrum - I'd go and have it checked on monday to be on the safe side. I gave myself permanent tinnitus after ignoring an ear infection issue and going for a surf - a decision I can't undo and have to live with the resulting whistle/white noise every day.
Better to be act today than ignore the symptoms and pay later. :head

You're right, i thought it wouldn't hurt just to go get it checked out just in case there was some underlying problem so i'll be in to see the GP tomorrow.I get pretty bad tinnitus as it is and my ears are in pretty bad shape.The thought of feeling like yesterday longterm isn't appealing.

I was doing short drops with short surface recovery.I think as i went back out for the second dive there was every likelyhood that i was rushing my equalisation as i was getting colder and trying to fit just a few more drops in.

Back from a nice 2 days van trip.
As said , met Badlander rofl ... (sorry I am crap at names.. and finally one that I remember and you don't like it!).... on Saturday morning by chance on the Lizard (wondering now who has the most embarassing forum name to be called in public). It wasn't a spot we had discussed but I guesse we both have been browsing multimap! 1st dip blanked, but spotted a Bass around 4lb. Good seeing a Bass on a stringer (even if it wasn't mine) and good motivation for the weekend.
My 2nd dip spotted some mullet, but passed on shots keen to get a Bass. Then once I was cold with no Bass decided to take a Mullet (which then took an age!). Took 2 in the end, as essential for BBQ. 1 of the Mullet had a nasty looking wound (fresh). Looked like a bite rather than an ulcer / growth. The skin had been ripped around the area (see photo). Needless to say I took my fillets well away from it.
On way to campsite met another spearo. Guy using tanks from the shore (not sure this would class as a spearo). I know nothing about diving but seemed to have been taking a lot of risks. Solo, no bouy, boat trafic. He had seen no Mullet or Bass , so took the opportunity to stress to him he would find it easier without the tanks!
Couple of pints in the local pub, and chatted to a local guy about the fishing. He swears he spotted Tuna last summer 30yards from the shore? , Told me stories of BIG Turbot, and a cove locally that is all flint.. and there is no flint on the lizard! A un recorded wreck, with flint as ballast?? Good local story teller ;>) ! .. or is there some truth?
Sunday got in on the dropping tide. Only spotted mullet and took 1 for the freezer which we will bbq later in the week. I found the water all weekend a bit cold!
Cheers for the help by pm spearos. On the road to feeling myself again! Ocassional moments of despair, but the Van trip was a major leap, considering 2 weeks ago I could have sworn I would have never surfed or speared again!

Despite family commitments al weekend, I found time for a quick dive on sunday morning. Took the boat out to a favourite South Coast spot, and despite the easterly and reports of plankton, found clear water on one of my favourite spots. After a few dives to locate the structure,I was lying next to a sandpatch downtide in 17m, when I saw 3 large shapes come over the top of the reef on the limit of visibility. They moved slowly towards me, and the nearest one presented a perfect shot. Didn't quite stone it, but nearly. I could see the spear was not fully through on the other side, and when I grabbed the fish to push it through, realised that it was bigger, and farther away than I though.
14.2lb, my biggest pollack yet, home made fish and chips for tea, perfect
