On the business front, can I pop in Wednesday and pick up some new blades to fit my foot pockets. I'll bring them with me. I fancy a new gun as well so I'll have a chat with you about that.

Thanks Dave for the quick delivery of the fins. I'm sure I ordered them the evening before the day they arrived - or maybe it was the evening before that. Either way, that was very quick and much appreciated; my bodge-it-and-dash repair on the old pair failed yesterday.

On a side note, anyone know of a good glue to stick rubber together? The prob with the old fins was the giant split down the back of the foot sleeve; a highly stressed area when getting the buggers on!

Some interesting reading dealing with the sun/moon/time of day with respect to fish activity - all common knowledge but nice to see it laid down in logical manner. Aimed more at the fisherman but might be of use.

Still no time scale for getting back in the water, but as i look out on the north coast today, its the calmest best looking spearfishing day I've seen in a looong time

Viz was poor here in Looe area, but do-able at about 3-4 metres. Nothing to bring home for dinner, but I did have my first sighting of a dog fish that swam right past me. A friend of mine says they're good eating. Is this true?

Not in my opinion but many people do eat them. Best thing to do is shoot one, eat it and see if you love it or yack?!

They're OK as a filler in fish cakes. Just don't leave them too long as they start to smell of ammonia.

Dog fish taste good. BUT.. they are a pain to prepare (skin). Really not worth the hassle. Fish n chip shops sometimes sell it up here.

Also they are too friendly. Puppy eyes, plus they have a nerve system that lives on long after they have been killed. I took one out of curosity some years ago, but didn't enjoy the experience.

I had a go on the south coast today before work. The viz was good in some places poor in others. A lot of that thick bloomy stuff. I saw dogfish, plenty of pollack and the usual wrasse. I didn't see any mullet or bass. It was a bit choppy but I still enjoyed it. Shiny...don't mention the sinking probleb ;-)

[Old Man Dave]

There are 2 types of dogfish, the small "lesser spotteddogfish" and the "greater spotted dogfish" or "bull huss". Its the greater spotted one that used to be sold in chip shops as rock salmon. The small dogs only grow to 3lbs or so and are common on open sandy/gritty bottoms. The bull huss grows to 20lb and is mainly found in reefy areas. Both types are members of the shark family and as such have no bladders. They excrete their urine through their flesh and out their skin, hence they smell/taste of ammonia. Traditionally all sharks and rays would be left a day or 2 for the ammonia to disapate. Dogs have ahite flesh with strong red muscle lines in it and is very firm. They have few bones well none actually as their skeleton is cartilidge not bone. The skin is very tough and covered in very small teeth called denticles which face backwards allowing the fish to move forward but preventing it from being pulled back. Dogs always curl up and rub their tails against you whcih can do you a nasty. They are very difficult to kill. Personally I don't eat them but they taste okay just a bit too much hassle for me.

with dog fish I gut them, top and tail them and cut the fins off with scissors then, without removing the skin, cut the fish into 1inch sections... fry them in Oliver oil, the skin falls off and leaves the meat. No messing about.....great with a bit of fried garlic.

I took one earlier in the year and I reckon they are pretty good eating (firm flesh, not too strong tasting, and no bones) - it's just the skin that is a nightmare to remove. I gather that freezing them kills off the problems with the amonia. I certainly prefer them to mullet.

Be carefull if you are sentimental though - they're kinda cute!

Sounds like top tuck! With so few silver fish coming my way I may have to start dining on doggies and wrasse.

I use to lived in antigua west indies and for the shark they use to live them soaking in water fresh lime juice and white vinegar to get rid of the ammonia it work nicely

All for trying new fish but can't bring myself to shoot a dopey looking wrasse! A friend of a friend shot and cooked one once and said that the flesh was green and his cat wouldn't even touch it! Not sure on the truth in this story but it has put me off trying one for sure!

Well, OMD and Foxfish seem to have debunked the anti-Wrasse thing with tales of "cold smoked" wrasse and delicious fillets. My issue is with them being so damn cute and friendly. I feel like it would be bad karma to shoot one in a wayrofl! Same with doggies, but yeah I do feel desperate. Still, got to count myself lucky with my run of beginners luck (pollock and flatties).

Does anyone reckon on getting in Sunday? My girlfriend's bro wants to come for a dip with us regardless of the weather, but I'm sceptical about vis. Anyone spotted clear-ish water about????

I cant dispute wrasse are good eating fish but I dont shoot them myself I just cook the ones others shoot.
