What do you think is the problem? Muzzle, line release, bands getting in the way?

Occasionally I find that the bands get hung up in the mono on my Cayman but it does not happen very often.

I was walking down at Gunwalloe / Loe bar the other day and saw a spearo coming off the beach with a cracking Mullet and what looked like a 60cm gun. I've heard dark tales about the water there and lives being lost in the strong currents and undertows. Brave bugger! I have to say though, there did look like some awesome reefs there at low tide.

I had the same problem with my cayman, I got rid of the mono and used dyneema line instead ( knot instead of crimp) problem solved, its never jambed since.

Im starting to lose faith in mono line, ive had 3 sets break on me in as many weeks. I have a good pair of crimps, I never over tighten and never pinch the crimp on the mono and I buy the cressi mono kits which imho are of good quality.

Im using Dyneema! Its because the gun is more complicated to load there is more room for error, occasionally the line just seems to get hung up on itself (usually when im in a hurry lol). I know its my fault but it never happens with my cheaper closed muzzle gun.

Got in today specifically to hunt grey mullet in bad vis and stringweed with my 60. Had some monster greys barge into me broadside to look at the muppet on the end of the gun. Took some shots but there were too many variables for success this time. Really enjoyed it though, felt like the playing field was levelled in my favour by the vis.

Got accosted by a senior citizen on my way out who demanded to know if my "harpooning" was for food or just for the hell of it :confused::head:confused::head
Took me by surprise that one!

Got in on the North coast yesterday for a low tide spear, was really dissappointed by the vis, the onshore chop stired everything up, got a small bass in the closing minutes though which made some lovely tempura!

Hi All.. I dived the same spot I went to the other day a couple more times over the last few days.. 1 Bass per trip.. not huge fish.. just over reg size. Seen lots of really inquisitive schoolies and even a sea trout too?! on the way back in the shallower water I also noticed all these black lettuce-like things that looked like slugs seemed to be mating everywhere on the seafloor! Bizarre.

Was thinkin of gettin a new gun.. between the £75-£100 mark.. any ideas?

Quick update on North Coast:

Dived Harlyn/Trevone for 2 1/2 hrs - fantastic vis at about 15m. Best I've ever seen it - glorious to swim in! Virtually no wind, slight chop and mostly over cast. You'd think the conditions were just about perfect and I guess they might have been if there had been anything to fish for, but all I saw was pollock upto 1 1/2lb and not even many of them. Plenty of sand eel sitting in the current of the ebbing tide but not a bass in sight. Saw a few makerel way overhead but not in schools - just the odd one.

Managed to find a lobster on the swim back to beach - no monster but dinner is sorted after a 15 min cat and mouse chase around a rock.

May try south coast on friday. keep the vis and weather reports coming.

Just had a quick dive in Newquay and was pleasantly surprised to see more bass than I have seen yet this year.. no real big fish but some big schools of up to 30/40 schoolies with a couple of bigger fish amongst em. Took 2 home with me and theyre in the oven as I write.. mmm.. amazing spicy aromas circulating the house!!! :)

Got in at my usual spot for an hours dive this morning - thought it would be thunder and lightning like they said on the weather forecast last night.....no - bright sunshine - I found quite a swell running and thought I'd spear the west side - realised as soon as I hit the water that there is more visibility in one of the wifes cup if tea than in the sea this morning - at times less than a metre.

Anyway swam out for a while, diving down to try and get some visibility - no luck - after 45 minutes I had started to become very queesy so started heading back. Thought the shallows may offer the odd opportunist bass and low and behold in less than 2m vis and 6 ft of water was a 5lb + bass. He saw me (sort of) and made to dart away quickly but slowed to an almost stop by which time I had moved the gun to him - fired for his head and at the last second he moved his head to the left and the spear missed - gutted, but glad I did not wing him.

Still good to be in and see bass as I seem to have spent the last couple of months on the yak!

Got in on the north coast, not great vis but found a shoal of bass in deeper water played cat and mouse with them for an hour or so and took home 3 :)

Was thinking about why i enjoyed it so much and realised that the difference was it was open water spearing, normally i spend my time in the seaweed, or at least where I can see the bottom this was a totally different experience, I was luring them in by dropping my weight and then diving down and meeting them about 10-15ft down and taking long range shots as they hovered around me. Or dropping down on them as they swum under me. Really good fun.

Trying to decide how to cook them up :)
