I'm in the market for a 20hp short shaft to go on the back of my new Aerotec 380 (but it must meet my rigorous specifications, i.e: it must be cheap!).

Dived again in Newquay today.. seen my biggest bass to date but he cruised away as I started to hunt him... then found a load more and was about to shoot an ok-ish bass when this beauty started cruising in from the edge of my vis.. I was fully in contractions by the time he got to me so had to kebab him head on.. it was a perfect head shot.. and I still had enuff air in my lungs to let out a hoot on the way up.. F-ing stoked

Hah.. yeah.. bring on the marker pen!! :t I thought I'd try and break up the outline a bit as I know that makes all the difference.. just having to make do with an old pair of diving fins for now until I can muster up enuff cash to get some proper blades!

Weighed the fish at 4lbs-ish but my scales are a tad rusty n old.. pity the marker pen wont bring them back to life too!!

Went in today at a spot that has been really crap for ages. I was getting ready to just go through the motions (i.e., tiny pollack and wrasse encounters) when I drifted over a sand patch that was alive - literally squirming - with Bass. Most were undersize, and there were a lot of them (schoolies) but on the edges were solitary ones of legal size. After 10 mins in the water I had 2 on my stringer, missed a good one, then left the area to avoid creating too much fuss. Came across another sandy area that had weed shifting in the tide and noticed a squad of Flounder doing their thing. Picked off two meal size ones then followed the weed further out. Spotted a rug of of a Flounder on the sand and got him on the spear. He weighed in at 1lb 14 oz, a personal best. On my way back in took another Bass that had its nose in the weed. 6 fish in under an hour, my best session spearfishing ever.

Saw a mullet and a bass doing a cute double act just after unloading my gun. Sometimes its nice to just watch.

I'm going to take a block off my belt as by the end of this session, with 6 fish on my belt (extra 9-10lb!), I was struggling to stay afloat rofl!!!!!

Vis was variable 4-5 meters better at depth.

Bass 1lb 15oz / Flounder 1lb 14oz

Went for a quick dip today. Visibility was poor and the water was much choppier. Managed to take a Bass so not an entirely wasted effort.

Seems to be quite fishy at the moment. Could it be that we are approaching a full moon??

Personally, I fish wherever I can find calm-ish conditions, a bit of vis, and no dodgy currents. South coast mainly due to my location.

thats what i was thinkin, north shore seems to exposed most of the time if thats the right word!? i remember surfing senon cove in 2001 during the summer we had some unusally good surf for the time of year i swam with dolphins in 6ft glassy surf and it was 30c out the water! it was crystal clear and always wanted to go back again for some spearing!

On the case i see Laz. Had a good time in Scilly but only dived once an took a mullet. Had the use of a kayak so spent most days fishing from that with some really good pollock for my troubles.
Looking like some good conditions coming up in the latter part of this week.

Sounds like a nicely chilled break you had there mate. Here is some Bass porn to torment all those in dry dock at the moment:

I bought a new Seatec Gabbiano recently, but have lost a few nice bass off the end of the spear, even though they seemed well shot, and the flopper is turned up - anyone else on here experiencing something similar with the Seatec spear? I'm beginning to get the hump with it?

Never had any problems with my Gabbiano it's just been finding the fish !

That got better this weekend with 2 5lb bass from Mounts Bay in pretty poor conditions but it was nice and murky after the crystal clear diving I've been doing on the North coast with limited success. One on Sat evening and the other on Sun morning. Missed a hatful of mullet on both occasions shooting high and low but had a great time getting thrashed about in the waves. The larger was 5lb 5oz and was with 5 or 6 similar sized fish which was great to see and because of the vis they were both shot really close. I so nearly didn't go in either!

Try getting some pliers on the end of the flopper and bending up the tip even more. Might help.

As for tangling, i have an open muzzle gabbiano and i only use fluro yellow mono shooting line which takes very little time to get it's 'memory' or shape and once it does i find it hardly ever gets tangled. The added bonus of the yellow mono shooting line is that if you have a detachable shooting line, it makes it a lot easier to locate your spear should you drop it whilst stringing a fish.

Yeah, I'm gonna turn it right up and just hope it doesn't affect the trajectory of the spear - I guess I'm just looking for reassurances that it isn't a common problem/design fault. Hopefully the problem will fade as I get more used to the gun. But it's infuriating to see big bass dissappear off the end of your spear, especially when you know that you hit them with a sweet shot.
