Andrew Hope you get better soon. I know it may not sound better, but speaking from xperience pins will speed up the healing process and allow more exercise for the muscles while the bone mends - I shattered my right leg in 1990 (cominuted fracture) and it was mended but due to the amount of bits it took 6 months to get out of plaster. Yours does not sound so bad so hopefully you may get to spear again before the Autumn.

One piece of advice is do listen to the physioterrorists, they do know what they are talking about......my God we have had a few accidents this year on the forum.

No, thank god. I checked for a camera crew before I let them take me in to the sea king I do love that programme though and now understand a little more about the vital part they play down here.

It's not so bad now. They did want to keep me in overnight so they could keep me doped up but I managed to talk them out of it. Hurt a fair bit when they reset the fractures but morphene does wonders. Had a huge lump where the bone was trying to break through the skin.

Ah, now it's getting worse. I had displaced ribs a couple of times and that only started to really hurt once the healing process had started. Similar pain. No spearing, no rabbiting, no fun. Still at least I get to watch all the Sporanos on dvd at last

Down near the lizard today, milky, vis about 5m ish, took 1 mullet, saw loads o bass, and saw something else i've not see before - bottle o pop and a packet of crisps for the man that identifies it:

pastel green with tiny red/orange spots, about the 3/4 size of the palm of your hand, body like a scorpion fish (yes!) but with two sets of pectoral fins that seemed to run the length of its body, and a "lure" on the end of it's nose about 1cm long, mouth like a monkfish. It was v.territorial and agressive for something so small - whenever I turned toward it - it faced off to me, opened its mouth, and started to come toward me till I backed off. Nice to see something new.

edit - it was nearly exactly this colour http://www.richard-seaman.com/Underwater/Indonesia/Lembeh/Highlights/LeafScorpionfish.jpg but it had an upper and lower set of pec fins that it used to power itself (albeit very slowly)

Obviously yesterday was a day of oddities. I speared a bass that had a very interesting belly full. At first I though the guts were jam packed with sand eels, or some other bait fish, but after a bit of amateur surgery a half digested, half the length of the bass, pilchard emerged... No wonder the bass just stared at me rather than bolting when I loomed out of the weed, it was suffering from serious indigestion. rofl

Bit of sunshine so had a few days away in the Van with the family. Met up with my local dive buddy and we had a couple of dives. Highlight was the swim around the Mount! Eventually rewarded with a 3lb Bass that tasted even better on the BBQ camping out.

Dive bouy? Reminded again today of the importance as a LARGE sailing boat moving with his outboard slowed, acknowledged our position and then passed infront of us when we waved it pass.

Still seeing very few Bass . But things are beginning to change!

Went back to my south coast golden grey spot day before yesterday, took my girlfriend snorkelling at low tide and really enjoyed a break from hunting , I had forgotten how much i concentrated when I`m hunting lol

She spotted the first Bass and then of course the gun had to come out

I got a little one and missed the biggest one I've ever seen in the flesh, I came over a rock and it was in the open resting on the bottom totally motionless, I aimed and fired at quite long range as I didn't want to spook it by moving out from cover, somehow I missed it by about an inch !!! I've had a few shots like this down at about a 45 degree angle shooting from the surface that Ive missed it;s incredibly frustrating, I`m wondering if its the surface chop moving my arm or if Im just rubbish!

I staye din for some time hoping to see the big bass again lol but in the end ran into a massive shoal of mullet, snapped fired at a big one and missed by the narrowest margin again! Frustrated I hung around and finally landed a couple of nice golden greys, technically much harder shots than the two bigger fish I missed, maybe I was focusing more by then.



The bigger of the two weighed in and 1lb 6.5 ounces which makes me a very happy camper

Even better they tasted FANTASTIC. BBQ`d in foil with garlic, chilli and lemon, really really good. Rounded the day off with a swim with a seal, then a dive with the dolphins , I love Cornwall!

Just a quick update. It's a spiral fracture, so my leg was rotated around until the bones snapped. This is good apparently and hopefully no bone fragments. Also I don't need any pins. Got the crappy, heavy white plaster off and a new snazzy pink and blue fibreglass type instead. Still full leg cast though. No load bearing for 3 to 4 weeks and then hopefully I get rid of the full leg and get a lower leg cast after 5 to 6 weeks.

Padaxes, you made me damn jealous with those bass!

Annoyingly a lot of fish generally have a great day after they've met me, watched a spear career past them, and then carry on with their sublime meanderings. rofl

Putting the feelers out again chaps.

My girlfriend has just booked us into a B&B in Portreath on the north coast of Cornwall, for later in August. Does anyone know if I am gonna be in a good area for spearfishing there (or surfing, if the weather turns that way).

It was a bit of a random choice, she sort of threw a dart at the map and chose the cheapest place nearby.
