I'm not a surfer but occasionally pass through Portreath. Given calm clear conditions it could be good as there is mixed ground both sides and a breakwater of sorts. A lot of sand though.

Have a look at the link above for a close-up of Portreath. Seems to be one hell of a busy break as well. I've seen long queues of surfers lining up right across the beach in double rows even when its quite flat! But you could be lucky on the day.

One of my pals who campaigned for SAS tells me that there is a PM discharge from a large outfall located west along the coast between Portreath and Hell's Mouth cove. Could bring the mullet in mate!roflrofl

Gaz, I lived and worked in Portreath for 8 years in the 90s. Surf is good - a big swell will fire up the right off the harbour wall from mid to high tide; moving away from the wall is Rockies, a mid tide left and right off the reef; and then the rest of the beach is a mix of left and right beach break. The bad news is it's over run with bodyboarders. Nothing works at low tide which is ideal for a bit of spearing - flat fish were abundant along with the usual silvery fish we're all after, try out towards the left of the beach and out to Gull Rock. Or round to the right and in to the nudist bay there, 2 hundred yards on from the little nudist beach was a big raw sewage outflow (between Portreath and Porthtowan) but that's been cleaned up now.

Other good surf spots are Godrevy to the south, as Padaxes says, and Porthtowan, Aggie and Perranporth to the north.

Went back to my GG spot again today at low tide, as I went out through the string weed I immediately saw a shoal of baby mullet, got all excited loaded my gun thinking mum and dad must be around somewhere..... then saw nothing for about 2 hours.

Had a nice snorkel through the string weed saying hi to the wrasse and mini pollack and was beginning to give up hope when I caught that flash of silver and bagged myself a 3.5lb mullet, not great by spearo standards but pretty damn good for me :)

I was sneaking up on a seabird on a rock (shag) when i heard some kid shouting from the shore "theres a seal behind you" and I had a great 15 minutes playing with him, he was rolling over and then swimming off and his head would come back out of the weed and he'd spy on me, quite jealous of his freediving skills :)

Got another small mullet and called it a day, ended up running round the carpark in my suit like an idiot catching an injured seagull to take to the bird hospital.

All in all a great day :)

birds can be exciting! I have been in a shoal of bait fish where seaguls have started bombing them above. Took a second to realise what was happening!

Seals love them after the initial fright when they sneak up on you! , especially if the viz isn't great. I'm sure they are looking at us thinking "your new to this, aren't you!?"

Hah seagulls are one of my favourite birds! Nothing makes me laugh more than watching someone's face as their unprotected pasty is snatched right from their fingers as they are going to take a bite :)

The seal was blowing bubbles did I read somewhere that's a warning sign ?

Anyone been in on the north coast, or eyeballed it lately? Wondering what the vis is like? Went for a surf near Godrevy last week and it wasn't too great, but it's been a week and maybe...

Looks like everyones been busy.Just got back from doing the Fastnet race and i'm gagging for a dive. Had to sail up the south coast yesterday in light winds to the finish but all i could do was look longingly in at all the spearing spots!

Portreath is a great dive spot Gaz and if you want any info regarding the area just PM me and i'll do what i can.

Fun dive on the north coast today, good vis. Saw lots of small bass and small mullet nothing worth taking though, ended up with a small pollack (2lb) and a 1.5lb trigger fish. It made a break for it, they only run if theyre guilty right ? And since everyone said they are so tasty I took it home.

Is it MADE of coral ? lol no idea how im going to prepare it!

Personal first saw an amazing little fish, just looked it up, baby john dory :)

I've noticed the water around falmouth beaches has been a rusty brown colour lately. Reading today's paper they say the south coast has been hit by toxic RED TIDE algae (report).

Seems like bad news for the fish.
