Steer clear of between Rosemullion Head and Nare Point as far as hunting bass is concerned as it's a nursery. Or at least that's what i've always believed.

Yeah, that was my thinking also. Seems to be part of the BSA code of conduct to avoid such areas (if you adhere to their edicts). I spoke to a helford angler who said there was no prohibition of angling from shore, just using boats and live prawn (or something suchlike). Spearfishing would probably go down like a lead balloon though!

Bass Nursery Areas

Fishing for bass from any vessel, as well as, fishing for any species of sea-fish using sand-eels (ammodytidae) as bait, is prohibited in 37 separate areas for all or part of the year. These areas, their extent and the seasonal duration of the prohibition are set out below. The legislation is Statutory Instrument 1999 No 75 The Bass (Specified Areas) (Prohibition of Fishing) (Variation) Order 1999).

Thanks for the link. That cleared a few things up but has raised a question too. Does that mean we can spear in the fal, in the carrick roads area, as the bass nursary does not start until way up past mylor!!

seems that by circumstances (swell and wind!) I have had to return my focus to surfing for the last few weeks.

May try the south coast this weekend, as have time for a Van trip . Whats the current score re. viz in the shelter of Falmouth and the Lizard?

if its poor I have a list of DIY jobs to do!

Im heading down the lizard way shortly so ill post a report for you later. I was out yesterday and the vis was bad, a few shallow covers were workable but still frustrating.

Whats the deal with reporting vis though, I think someone brought it up a few days ago but dont think a consensus was agreed. Is the range in which you can see a fish?

I can set a standard -

Bad = 1 - 2 meters or one gun length (ie you can barely see the end of your spear)
Not bad = 2 - 4 meters you can see two gun lengths & occasionally more.
Patchy = a combination of the above.
Good = 4 - 6 meters you can see fish well before they are in range.
Very good = 6 meters +
Amazing = 8 meters +

Just had a dive in Falmouth bay area(ish) and i can report good vis up to 5-6m. Hideous head cold that meant i couldn't dive deeper than a couple of meters though. Didn't really matter, had the best couple of fish i've had all year biggest being 6lb 10oz and three fish taken in total.

Not the double figured beast but i'm not going to complain.

Had a chat with some fishermen who were fishing the same area on plugs on their boat when they came ashore and they'd had a fair few bass also.

Tomorrow should be pretty good too though i think it's set to go southerly for sunday.

Thanks to all for the tips on Portreath.

Unfortunately I couldn't get in because of the big swells that week (end of August).

I had a hoofing time surfing the surrounding areas though, so still very happy.

Badlander - what a beauty, well in mate You had more luck than me! I was nearish the Lizard and also had good vis, between 4-6 meters (cheers for the metrix foxfish). Unfortunately no fish It was one of those days where the ocean just seemed empty? I did see my first trigger fish though but left it alone.

Can i ask when you guys traditional hit the water ie low/high/rising tide - I think Im getting wrong

Also, I have a window for one last dive tomorrow if anyone has any recomendations

If the trigger was over 2lb it would of been a very nice meal indeed!
Where I live we dive over the low tide, that is always the best time (with only a very few exceptions) however I know this can vary from location to location.
It makes sense to hunt flatfish at low tide as the areas we find them are to deep at high water, bass are to be found in the string weed this is at a perfect depth during low tide.

Tony, like Foxfish i generally tend to aim for low and the incoming tide.Low tide is good for stalking through the stringweed and shallow gulleys.All the fish i caught today were in shallow and mooching about probably digesting their last feed whilst staying out of trouble.Shame about the triggerfish, i've been after one of those all year but to no avail...
I'll PM you a few suggestions for tomorrow.

Ta for that - I didn't think it would be much cop.

I've just had a look off Porthleven now and it looks badly murky from the surface - wind is currently westerly, I'm tempted but I think i'll leave it till tomorrow, but then the forecast for tomorrow is cloudy and rainy sw'ly turrning s'ly, getting worse through the day....can't wait.

As for as "reporting vis" goes just use your common sense really, i'm sure we'll figure it out.

Went in again today at the same spot.Vis was the same around 5m with less in places. The difference today was in the fish.....or lack of them! I saw a handfull of mullet which i happily left and spotted only one bass of about 3lb who came home with me.Actually saw more spearos than bass which is a first.Saw three guys in a rib and one guy turned up as i was getting out.Teach me for shooting my mouth off about a good catch!
Had another chat with the same rod fisherman from yesterday who explained his thoughts on the difference between today and yesterday fish-wise and it made a lot of sense.He also gave me a hot tip for flatties later in the year.....it's nice when we all get along!
