Best of luck with it Gutshot. I think locating and trying new places is one of the most exciting things in spearfishing. Sooner or later you get lucky and find a real good one.

I do like trying new spots. Last year me and spearflap did 2 new offshore spots and both were like hitting the jackpot! I tend to get bored hitting the same old spots time and time again. Anyway, i like the sense of adventure

Got a good dive in today. A double first for me with trigger fish and also a john dory. The trigger fish were schooling around a steep rocky face and wouldn't budge so between me and my friend we took 5 and then opted to just watching them. I got some really good footage of them schooling. We also managed some good bass and a pollock. Also spotted where large schools of juvinile black bream but as the biggest was less that 5 inch we just enjoyed the show.

The john dory was taken on an exploration on a new reef which was fairly deep at about 10m. The viz was bad so we dive the one up, one down pattern to keep an eye on each other. The dory made a long slow approach to me and showed me its side giving me a good shot.

I have just eaten the john dory as a starter which, although fiddly to fillet, was lovely eating followed by the bass. The trigger fish are lined up for tomorrow night.

The viz was bad for the north coast and the sea was a little too rough for my buddy as he got to view the mornings breakfast for a second time :yack. Attached is a pic of both of our catches and also my biggest trigger and my john dory. The john dory measured up at 34cm and the trigger at 37cm.

I will post a video clip of both fish when i get a chance.

JD & triggers are both up high on my list of eating fish - I find the smell of trigger flesh intriguing.

Thanks, The John Dory was really nice. Some of the best fish i have eaten. It was cooked very basic to get the full taste, i.e. slightly seasoned and grilled with roast pepper salad. The Trigger fish is on the table tonight and i am expecting good things from what i have heard.

Oddly enough my other half or my little boy were not too keen but my little girl loved it. As for me,.. i thought it was really good. Need to get some more. Really good texture and taste.

Havn't done any spearing as I headed north for some freediving, managed a new personal best of 32.5 meters which I`m pretty stoked with (not as good as old Tom H though).

Hoping to squeeze in a night dive or two this week.

I'm hoping to find some visability somewhere after work. Any suggestions by pm gratefully recieved for either coast, but given the wind probably south, between bodmin and truro. Suspect I'll end up heading to a usual spot that should at least have some shelter.

Was down in pz today at low water and thought that looked interesting? Also spotted another reef/island along the coast that looked worth a go some time.

Impressive diving mr padaxes. I did 30m in the SETT tank years ago but haven't done anything of any real depth for a while. I have been keeping my diving fairly short and shallowthis year after my little scare last sept but as i am doing ok for fish i dont feel the need to push things at the mo. I do intend to start some hypoxic training as spearfishing was always a way of being ready for the bigger surf through out the winter. Not looking like there will be much surf when i come down your way over the bank holiday.

sj257, not sure what the viz is like but there is suppose to be south in the swell direction so your idea of the sheltered spot sounds like the go. I will look forward to hearing your report on the viz. Good luck

Edit 16:00 Sorry sj257, just checked the wave buoys and there is no south in the swell at all. They cant seem to make up their minds!

Hey guys, Could I pick your brains on night dives as I’ve never done one as wouldn’t have thought you could see anything lol?! So what’s the deal, do you take a touch or something or just go when the suns going down but there is still some light left?
Also I heard there tends to be more fish about – is that true? Cheers,

Got out for two and a half hours yesterday. Vis was poor, maybe 3m at best and down to 1.5m at times. Still managed to bag one decent Bass of about 42cm in a patch of better vis. Very frustratingly at one point I could just make out some decent fish but the vis was right down so couldn't get a shot at one.

Sounds like my regular spot is quite popular as when I get out I often get reports of other spearo's having been in the day before. Aparently one had a decent lobster out on Monday. Anyone here? I've only ever seen others there on one occasion.

Bad weather, bad sea conditions, very bad viz,...tis a good job the fishing was good. It was a struggle diving 8+ m when you can only see about 2m in the water but still managed 2 fine bass,..... oh, and just as a one fingered salut to my disallowed trigger fish a few days ago i went and got one of those too . This one is being bigger than the other one. rofl 46 cm and 2lb and 2.75oz without guts for those who need to know :t.
