Looks like there's a glimer of hope for improved conditions on the south coast tomorrow and my gears nearly dry.

Vis looks awsome on the North Coast but I don't know any good and sheltered spots that I have the confidence to go try. So probably one of the usual south coast spots.

Just thought i'd post a pic of the teeth from the trigger fish from today. I thought i'd killed him when i put him on the stringer but then he suddenly went nuts and nailed me in the upper leg. Once he sunk his teeth in he wasn't letting go. I have a nice hole in my suit there now! When he finally let go, before i got my knife out he had then bitten a hole in the stomach of the bass which was also on the stringer.

If anyone intends to have a pop at trigger fish be carefull of the teeth. I also found out a way that you can string them avoiding the teeth. Go through the gills, in one side out of the other. The only problem is the gills are tiny. Good luck.

Dont be fooled. The viz was bloody awful. At best3m in some small patches, mostly it was barely 2m which was tricky because the reef was about 8m deep so lining up a dive was more luck than anything else. Coming up was ok though, blow out a bubble and follow it home

The joy of being a newbie. I never get down to 8m and spend about 98% of my time on the surface. But more than 3m would still be good.

Dive genie looks like the vis is better tomorrow than it has been of late. Still believe it when I see it (or don't).

Keep the faith buddie. I've been doing this for three years and have only got to 8m max. My ears just can't take it and that's with double dosing Sudafed for most a week ready for the weekend. Budleigh Spearo joined our crew last year and is doing 12M+ already. Everyone is different and will progress differently. I've had plenty of bass to 5lb, flatties, pollock, J-dory, rays and shellfish in less than 5m so don't worry about depth. I'm sure the guernsey boys will bear me out with me that in the shallow weed beds big bass can be taken in less than 1m.

PS - Forgot to mention I got to added depth after a freedive course at Vobster key with Podge et al. The breathing tips alone were worth the drive and fee - add that to a great day with fellow spearos and its hard to beat. Something to look into perhaps.

Should have been clearer. I meant that I would like more than 3m of vis (which is sadly optimistic at the moment).

I guess I'm ok diving down to about 6m to pick up the odd spider crab. With you on the ears as the preasure is building then. I do wonder if it will be better with the hood of the new suit. Need some more lead first though to have a better chance of getting down there. I feel like on good days my breath hold is slowly improving a tiny bit. Always very careful as I'm out alone.

I think most of the Bass I've had have been in about 2-2.5m. Would still like to find some bigger ones though. Would really help with the domestic credits if I could get some better fish.

Still keeping my fingers crossed to get out after work if I can pick a good spot.

Unusual day yesterday. Spearfished the north coast in the morning and surfed on the south in the evening! Usually the other way around.

Spearing was mostly spent being hasled by seals. At least 6 of them. Strangely the Bass seemed to be hanging out within about a 5m radius of the seals. Had 1 Bass.

Sounds like I've possibly been fortunate having not yet encountered any seals. To be honest I'm a little nervous about the do's and donts for when I inevitably to encounter one.

What are they like and any hints or tips?

Forgot to mention that when I was out on Tuesday, shortly after I'd shot my bass a boat long lining for bass went through pretty much where I anticipated the shoal would be with at least 8 lines out and didn't appear to get a touch. Found that quite interesting.

Well I guess tonight was the healthy option. A long swim with no food found. So callories burn with nothing to replace them.

About the worst vis I've ever encountered so didn't see anything. Did a lot more diving though in a vain attenpt to spot something. I'd estimate I'm comfortable getting down to 6m maybe 7m, but my ears are getting quite painful at that depth. Need more lead to make staying down easier too.

Really hope we get some decent vis soon. I guess I also need to brave up and search out some other spots.

Went in on the north coast this evening, really choppy but fantastic viz a bit further out, was probably up to 8-9m ish. Could still make out the bottom fairly well at 10m deep. Didn't come home with anything though!

Going to go on another night dive tomorrow though.

Mate I don’t want to seem like a pushy tw*t but don’t overdo the lead as the easy part is getting down there but the real trick is to keep a 100% track record in getting back to the surface without too much trouble.
As a very rough rule of thumb if you’re hunting in a 7 meter average then you want to be neutrally buoyant at around 5 meters. At least that’s what I was told a few years back by a bloke that’s defiantly part fish.
Oh and don't forget your surface times, if you're down for 1min then you need 3 times that on the surface for a good recovery.

Watch out for you ears matey. How often do you equalize when you dive down to 7m.

I would equalize about 3 times. twice on the way down then once when I get to the bottom

I seem to only be able to equalize when uninverted on the bottom. My ears simply will not "Pop" on the way down. I have to be 'right way up' to get them to go, even then it takes five seconds or so of hard pushing whilst they make the sound of a deflating balloon for them to fully equalize. My diving life is not as simple as it would seem for others. Maybe I am unlucky in the aural department :head

My right ear is the same during summer Tribs. I equalize slowly, the left ear goes a lot quicker than the right. The doctor checked my ears about 2 months ago and says they fine, he did say that hayfever plays a big part in Ear discomfort.
