Stay home and lounge about and give in to the hangover and miss the first decent conditions in a while? Or get my act together and get in the water? I'm doing it. My vomit has brought the fish in before now.

Turned out to be the wrong choice. Gone are the days of youth when ducking under a couple of waves was enough to clear any hangover.
It was choppy, and of course the viz wasn't great. Swam out. Puked. Swam back, went home. Think Goingtothecoast fared a bit better, obviously due to the advantage I gave him with the bait.

Haha no probs jowens.
I knew you would be baiting :yack the water when I seen those white tops and it worked lol, 2 bass, 2 cuttlefish, 4 pollock and a huge mullet but it unfortunately ripped off before I could retrieve it, they just dont give up the fight.
Plenty of fish about at the moment but Ive not seen many of the big bass we should be seeing at this time of the year.

Been absent from the forum for a while, but been doing a bit of spearing. Found some nice pollock and some very wary bass at a deeper headland mark which will be visited again Have been catching quite steadily but nothing unusual or very big

I attach a picture of a couple of 2lbers and a 3lb 11 fish from a lizard mark a few weeks back... and a lobster who wouldn't come out his hole!

I'll finish with a word of warning...

I was out this evening at castle beach, falmouth. We were in the water for about an hour, and having seen very little and not a single crab or lobster which was the purpose of the dive, some relaxed bottom times were in order. My buddy kindly spotted me for a couple, super relaxed, nice calm minute or so bottom times in about 7m. So in we went. Not content with getting out just yet, as it was warm and the vis wasn't horrendous, I wanted to have a couple more dives and managed some easy 1.30 dives in about 6m - only problem being I was a effing idiot shmuck douche-face about it and did this on my own.

On my last dive, after a 1.30 bottom time (and approx 5 minute rest before this dive) I left the bottom feeling a tad squiffy, went up very slowly and casually having had no contractions and felt decidedly worse at the surface. At this point I genuinely became very worried about blacking out, dumped my weight belt and lay on my back doing some hook-breaths while pulling my SMB towards me. As I hung onto my marker my legs lost control and my foot started to twitch. Samba?! I pulled my mask off and called out to a couple of spearo's nearby for help and waved. They both took one look at me and carried on doing what they were doing. If this was you, I don't blame you for not understanding my situation as I didn't really know what was going on at that point and might have thought I was dreaming. Nonetheless, the distinct lack of any care or concern really disheartened my as I lay there for the next 5 minutes recovering so I could lift my weight belt (attached to smb) just before heading ashore.

I need to stress - I was not tired, was perfectly warm, wasn't going deep, had no contractions, am physically fit, eat well, can do statics 4min plus and was very comfortable today. I'll never know how much trouble I could have been in, but will never ever ever dive like that alone again, and will from now on attach SMB to belt at all times to make dumping it a more attractive option.

Don't really know what else to say except be safe, don't dive alone and it COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE AT ANY TIME

Gents, a few of us lowly Dorset types are coming down for a few days as from tomorrow, staying on the Lizard.
If any of you fine folk could see your way clear to posting up a general sea/condition report we’d much appreciate it.
We’ll be staying at The Old Inn Mullion so if any of you fancy a little drink one evening then its always good to put a face to a name, we’ll be the blokes that are either inside and all dribbling from to much cider or sat outside and in true freediver style smoking cigars while also drinking cider.
Cheers Gents. :friday

Mounts Bay was like a mill pond this morning and I think the conditions are supposed to be pretty good for the next few days. If you check the surf reports on Magic Seaweed and take a look at the Praa Sands web cams that'll give you a fair indication of the sea state around the Lizard.
Happy hunting!

Praa Sands Surf Report, Surf Forecast and Live Surf Webcams

light SE'erlies saturday 6-8mph and a light building to moderate (15mph) ssw on sunday. Temperatures to 18 degrees (but I think it will be hotter). We've had northerlies for a few days, so the sea is very flat on south coast and warm. Vis average in falmouth bay, but it usually is and the spring tides never help.

Forecast for your weekend is for bass and mullet over low water in any stringweed you can find (I can advise you on a cracking spot if you keep it quiet and are in need of one!), dover sole at night, small john dory and one large blonde ray.

Looking good for a great weekend, bring your suncream and filleting knives!

Thanks gents.
Derfl, let me sort out your green Rep bar mate.
Waterman, thanks for the offer of a secret spot but I reckon we’ll be ok for places to spear as I’ve been spearing the lower part of your pleasant land for a long time now.
Rep on the way over to you both.

Popped in for a couple of hours this morning before work to be greeted by small bass in almost plague proportions. Ignoring the tiddlers went in search of bigger fish. Saw 4 bass in the 5lb range but failed to connect with any of them. Came home with the largest schoolie I could find (about 1 1/2lb) and a tubby mullet of about 3lb. Conditions were good for hunting but not the best viz of the year. Next dive planned for Sunday.

Podge,
I Live in Helston and was thinking about having a dive this Saturday if you guys want some company?

Portuguese men-of-war sightings on Cornish beaches - BBC, today
Dr Richardson said they "deliver an agonising and potentially lethal sting".
I recently visited one of the obscure locations mentioned in the article but there was too much swell to spear that day. However I did wade in while plugging for bass there. And a father took his 3 young kids in paddling there (v. quiet beach). No sign of "blue bottles" that day though.

Had a good dive on the north on Saturday vis was really good and a lot of fish in amongst the string weed with a number of flattys on the beach, ended up taking home 3 flattie and a bass all in all a good dive

Hey all, I am down in Cornwall for a couple of days from Dorset, currently staying in Downderry just outside Looe, got in yesterday murky 2-3m vis on a falling tide and saw not a lot other thab a cuttle (too small) a flounder (too small) and a mullet (too fast) of course the wind has now picked up and its looking shocking. Any one got any vis that I might find to have a dip and hopefully a few fish?! Debating on taking the kayak out to try for some mackerel but think its just too windy and rough
Thanks in advance!
Joe

Just home from a morning dip. oodles of small bass with the odd bigger one. viz ranging from spear tip to 5m, very localised. well worth the effort, came home with a mix of bass and mullet to 3lb.

Hi,
Myself and girlfriend are based in st ives and just purchased a cressi apache, which we shar. Were taking baby steps but hooked. How do I know if fish are big enougth? Iv seen some silver fish, bass I think, about length of finger tips to elbow. In water about 1.5 to 2m is this size ok?

We are not using weight yet and only have summer suits but only had spear for a week.

Any advice would be amazing.

Best advice I can give is keep doing what you're doing. This forum is a great place to research the do's and don'ts of spearfishing. Use the search facility and you'll find information regarding legality and min size limits. You will be slightly limited by surface hunting although my best fish this year have come from very shallow water. Give it another go and if you decide that this is the sport for you then you can start looking at better suits, weight belts and all the bells and whistles. Be safe and good luck.
