Lamorna Cove - don't bother - spearguns prohibited! :(

Just got back from a nice trip down to Cornwall. Had a great time, apart from the rain (which wasn't too bad), traffic there & back (horrendous) and ... Lamorna Cove :(.

Noticed a little cove between Penzance & Land's End in a guide book that looked interesting, at least in the watercolour illustration. So we dropped by on the way back from Sennen to scope it out for spearing later in the week and have dinner at the harbour-side cafe'.

Unfortunately the harbour is somewhat smaller & grimmer than the guide book's rather charming watercolour illustration suggested. Worst of all, spearguns are prohibited at Lamorna!

Their loss: the cafe' looked quite good but was completely empty that evening and we would have been good customers for them - but instead we opted not to fund this anti-spearing community/business/people. Opting to return to the friendly pub at Trewellard instead.

By the way, half a dozen anglers had ignored the warning signs and barriers on the (storm damaged) harbor walls in order to fish off the end.

Re: Cornwall 2012 - "trip report" - Penwith

This holiday wasn't ostensibly a spearing trip but squeezed a couple of dives in when the sea was too flat to surf. Happily I managed to spear a couple of decent fish each time I dived. Although I had to look quite hard. I suspect the enthusiastic Cornish fisherman keep stocks under control (they certainly did in St. Ives). Only caught tiny glimpses of larger fish - and they weren't monsters. Perhaps the legendary Cornish good visibility allowed the fish to see me first? Found my 75cm speargun fine for the conditions/fish encountered (the fish were generally fast moving and visibility was fair to good).

Accessing the sea shore is frustratingly problematic on the rugged, north & west coasts of Penwith. Despite the miles of coast line, there are only a handful of walk-in approaches that provide sea-level access. (I used to like that when I was climber).

We enjoyed looking around St. Ives. Although I didn't get to dive there, it looks like it has potential. Need to visit Newquay sometime too ... if/when they finally get the roads into Cornwall* & the change-over days sorted out**

* Couldn't believe the A30 still goes down to single lane each way for a short distance over Bodmin - caused complete havoc to the traffic flow :(. The M5 (& M4, M6 & M25 apparently) was grid-locked yet again on Friday coming back - and the government just talks about trains & airports :(.

** Thought we'd avoid most of the traffic by changing over on Friday but apparently everywhere in Cornwall now changes over on Friday :head.

Re: Cornwall 2012 - sea anemone sting

Almost forgot. I got a nasty sea anemone sting across the jaw (it somehow got inside my hood too). My jaw/chin swelled up so that it looked like Desperate Dan's! :blackeye

It got quite a lot worse than shown above too, before it finally started to get better.

The rash, which changed colour several times, seemed to alternate between being numb and stinging for 4 days. :crutch Like a very bad stinging nettle rash but considerably worse. :(

BTW The lifeguard & pharmacist that I asked about this had no idea how to treat anemone stings (I just used anticeptic wipes a day or two after the event). This link has information on treating sea anemone stings: http://www.essortment.com/beach-first-aid-identifying-treating-bites-stings-sea-creatures-37819.html

Bad luck with the stung face!
I think that is the first & only picture of you on db though -a little piece to add to the jigsaw!
I really enjoyed Newquay last year ( & the time before) but is was during a heat wave & felt more like an Australian beach town than Cornwall!
I have never seen so many posers in one place in such a short time but I rather enjoyed it all LOL...

RE; LAMORNA.... Mr X I think there has been a previous thread on this spot . They will probably ban taking photos of the sign now !!! The clampers are very zealous in this area as well!. I have dived and speared there with no probs (or fish). The whole of this area is very nice but a bit upmarket now though, and there are good spots not too far away ! Yes the traffic is bad on fridays and saturdays as well now and parking (costs) is getting beyond a joke ! Some of the best vis you are likely to find in the UK though !! Are you sure it was an anenome and not a jellyfish that stung you ?

It looks like a Snakelock anemone sting, Ive noticed them attached quite high up on Japweed when I'm swimming through the shallows at low tide, had a few near misses with them myself.

Yes, defo. an anemone - it was still attached to my face when I noticed the stinging :(. As best I can recall, it looked like a regular, albeit very large, anemone with pink-ish tentacles. Not a jellyfish but I did see a lone jelly fish floating nearby at a different location (once saw a whole beach littered with jellyfish then on Gower - apparently blown off course from Spain). Apparently I swam real close to a pod of Basking Sharks but never saw them, according to several folk on shore. Apparently kayakers were close enough to stroke them.

Shame about Lamorna - it looked like they could have done with our business too. Getting access to the shoreline seems to be a problem in Penwith. Lomorna has a car park right next to the shore, so would have been ideal for a short evening or early morning dive. Meantime, the family could look round (not much to see) and have a meal or tea & cake..

West Penwith access: Check out Pemberth and Porthgwarra on the south coast of Penwith between Lamorna and Lands End. No restrictions as far as I can tell. Pemberth is a short walk to the water from the free parking area but is down a smooth lane. Porthgwarra is pay parking, but only just above the cove. These are the only spots on the south coast of West Penwith where you can access the water close to parking that aren't busy beach spots. I haven't speared there yet but they both have all the ingredients to be good spots. On the North Coast, there are a few ways in aside from the busy beaches. There's a small road to the bottom of Cott Valey near St Just with limited parking. Rocky and exposed so conditions would have to be perfect. At Pendeen light house there's a small rocky inlet in front of and below the light house to the Northward, a short walk from the free parking behind the lighthouse. Again in good conditions this is a nice spot with the potential to follow the shoreline along towards Portheras Beach. Other than that, your only option on this coast is a long carry with your kit, but if you spend the day there, the locations and the solitude on this coast can more than make up for the effort in getting there. Just watch the conditions as there's no help at hand for miles!

Lamorna Cove, one of the best Crab Sandwiches I’ve ever had:):), after a friendly chat with the people in the café I had no problems spearing there although after covering most of the bay didn’t really see anything worth taking. lovely ground though and well worth a dive even if its just with a camera.

Pendeen lighthouse along to Portheras beach, with calm conditions it’s a beautiful dive its also got the most seals that I’ve every come across, most seemed friendly but one big ass bull seal had the right hump last time we were there and we had to get out on the old boat launch just before you get to the beach.:blackeye

Down the beach today the family. Managed to find a bit of viz, oodles of small mullet about and just one lone bass. Took one of the larger mullet for tea. Almost had a cuttle fish as well, stabbed what I thought was a flatty in the sand but the spear didn't penetrate and a rather upset cuttle squirted off.
