Ah SJ, I feel your pain! Lost my go pro off a kayak a couple of years ago :(

Toby have you tried putting your video on vimeo? It never seems to have a problem with music on it etc.

Here's a shot from yesterday. SJ I think you asked what camera it was, its just a sony compact, wx5 I think, and an ikelite housing. Got it as it does pretty good HD video (although I don't use it much) and the wide angle lens which is pretty useful for shots like this!

Great video, a good reminder that I'm missing out and need to bite the bullet and do some night dives.
Got in on north coast yesterday, great vis but only saw one decent fish from distance (although bumped into Kernow Sniper (good to meet you by the way) who did set eyes on some bass). I did bag a beast of a spider crab though weighing in at 5lb1oz.

I believe it was a huss, it was bigger than it looks on the film, about 3 ft long. Course I cold be wrong.

And the fish was a gilthead bream.

Lovely. Well done mate. Are there many being caught around Cornwall at the moment?

Yeah you def want the go for focus lense for the go pro

aquapixs

Which country has EMI blocked the video in ? The UK ? I can still see it is that because it's my video ? Edit: ah it is wankers!

Cheers Padaxes.

I have one of those lenses but don't like swapping lenses in and out of cases. So I thought I would buy the Eye of Mine flat lense case, suposedly tested to 100ft. so I was pretty gutted that it filled up when the deepest I'd gone was 3m.

Thought it was a good idea. Turns out not.

Pad axes, what is your setup. Is your torch mounted or being held in your left hand? I watched without knowing you had your spear, until it slid in from the right side of the picture! Another good reason to do more night dives! Thanks for sharing!

I used to mount my GoPro on top of my torch but found that washes out you shots, and the particles in the water all reflect back at you.

So now I use my normal gun mount and hold the torch in my left hand and shine it in from the side.

The Life Aquatic: Bits and bobs

Im planning a new setup though with two torches shining in from the side and the camera in the middle, like you see on proper underwater cameras.

Hi all,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I did a quick search and couldn't find anything. I am looking for some information on currents around Cornish beaches. I tend to dive around Portwrinkle and that sort of area, and I'm always worried about getting into any kind of real depth because of this. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

It depends on the beach and coastline really. Currents are stronger around headlands or near islands, I guess as the water has to funnel around them. Same around reefs or where it gets shallow quickly. The tide is usually strongest at mid tide (ie 3 hours before/after hw or lw). 'Slack water' is usually about half an hour either side of the tide, where there shouldn't really be any appreciable current.

Personally, i've never really noticed huge amounts of current shore diving, unless you are near islands or headlands.

You can get into trouble in the wrong place around the Cornish coast there are some deadly currents.

this site gives a rough idea of how it works and why our tidal flows are so unusual.

Cornwall Custom Kayaks How the Tides Work in Cornwall

If your diving a new exposed spot you are worried about try it on neep tides close to slack tide first and see how it feels.

Thanks very much, I'll take a look at that! I very much doubt the area is anything new, but I suppose you never know.

We love the strong tides! you just need to understand what is going on & at what time it is going to happen!
I would suggest you stick to the bays to start with & cautiously build your confidence.

The tides themselves don't worry me; I always check the tide times before going out. What worries me is the possibility of unexpected currents, sweeping me out to sea when I thought I was ok.

OK sorry, when I say tides, I dont mean high & low - I mean the whole episode!
Which way the tide runs & at what time it changes direction, when the tide runs at its hardest & where the current & eddies appear, how the tide relates to the mood phase etc...
So as a very general rule, you don't get strong tides inside a bay but you will get direction.
So by knowing the direction you can prepare to swim into the lea side of a reef & safety wait for passing fish. Or you could swim to end the bay, to a point of peninsular & grip hold of some weed to hold you in place from the running tide & shoot some fish.
Want you dont want is massive fast tide sweeping you out to sea or flattening out the Jap weed so it lies flat & is impossible to hunt in.

Hi guys anyone help....any viz on north or south coast ? Cheers....
Wana dive this weekend this weekend, anyone out diving.
Matt

vis on the north has been good this last week, up to about 6 meters on my dive wednesday, but swell has made it a bit murky now, maybe 1m on the surface and 3m at about 15 ft. Seen some schoolies so hopefully something reasonable soon. plenty of eddy crabs aboot. West facing south coast has had a bit of swell too, so i'll leave the rest of the guess work to you :mute. Im off for a dive.
