Sounds great. Right then, I'm going to book my ferry to arrive early Saturday and leave late Sunday, giving me both days for lots of diving. Excellent.

What are the chances of a night dive on Herm?

Sorry Jonny I thought 4 hours would be enough?
We can start earlier if you think that is a good idea but we cant extend it much or nobody would make the Herm boat?

4 hours is a normal swim in the summer mart ;) this is a special comp, so maybe 6 hours? this would also allow people to try a couple of places which they might like to?

Also, although the herm trip will be great, maybe it might be a good idea if we have an option for people to bbq their catch after the dive? maybe keep the social by the beach so that people can have a beer and watch how others do as they stagger out the sea with their hauls???
i know you've organised lots, but just my 2p worth :)

Got to agree Johnny, I would love to go over to Herm (haven't been there since I was a teenager) but there is a danger of trying to cram too much in to a short weekend. So a bbq on the beach sounds like a good idea.

OK I will be totally honest & say this event has been planed to be a fun, family affair & as I am not a competitive spear fisherman I did not consider jonnys points.
In fact if I look at my idea I guesse it is a bit of a soft approach & not really about competitive killing skills.
So on that basis I will be happy to leave the competition format & organising to Jonny & Mike. :)
In fact the Guernsey trip is a deeper blue sponsored event & I am just acting as a middle man.

Maybe have 2 different competitions? One for the more experienced, hardcore spearos, and one for the beginners/those that want to take it easy? You could stagger he start time, eg. the hardcore group start at 8am through til 4pm, and the second group starts at 12? That way; everyone finishes at the same time, with time to barbecue, and there should still be time to catch the ferry oce everyones fished and fed...? Just an idea..

Martyn your involvement and knowledge are invaluable mate :)
I just offered a suggestion and i'm sorry if i have upset you.
I am not in a position to organise or run anything, but will be around to help, if necessary, over the weekend.

Folks - the idea is to have a bit of fun. We'll have structure on the weekend by having socials, some funs comps, activities and pretty much anything people want - Mart (who isn't just a middle man BTW - he's being modest :)) and I are open to suggestions and offers - just want to make sure the whole weekend is fun for all involved!

So if we have a six hour competition on Saturday it would start at 11am & finish at 5pm!
Sunday would be 12 - 6pm?

We would have to think of some system to allow people who dont want to dive for that duration so they can be registered & get in later (over the low tide)?

I was planning to have everybody around to my firehouse on Sunday to eat the catch after the weigh in?

The idea of a beach BBQs sounds great but when you are catering for quite a few folk, include non spearfish partners & families it would take a lot of organising.
Someone would have to set up the BBQ, buy salad drink & food, supply plates, cutlery & most of all someone would have to pray for good windless clear Sky's!
However we could try for a smaller beach BBQ on the Thursday or even on the Friday evening as there will still be 6-7 of us diving those days?

Herm is an amazing experience for folk who dont live by the sea, the tiny island has no cars & even radios are banned on the beach but, they serve good food & wine in a hub bub atmosphere.
The evening includes an 20 min boat trip, food in a courtyard BBQ or in a restaurant, time for a pint & back on the boat at 10.30pm.

Martyn,

The comp times seem good to me provided they fit with tides safety wise? I don't know Gnsy tidal directions/flows ?

I think 6 hours in the summer is OK. Nobody has to stay in for six hours if they don't want to.

If u want to stagger starts, u could use a sign in and sign out sheet.

ie Nobody starts before official start time, but can turn up,sign in and take part any time after that, up until official finish. Suggest that all competing divers must sign in and out and all divers must be signed out by official finish?

Luv th idea of another BBQ at your firehouse!

Just booked my ferry crossing. Saturday morning arriving in Guernsey at 0900, leaving Sunday night at 2130. £50 return - not as cheap as it used to be, but what is?! On the plus side, Condor ferries didn't charge me anything at all to bring my bike and trailer full of spearfishing and camping gear.

Can't wait!

Nice one mate, where are you sailing from?
£50 is not bad really though, although it can seem like a hell of a lot to watch people being sick. LOL.
just kidding as it will be flat calm that weekend!

Woo-hoo sounds good! Haven't posted on here for a while.:friday

I'm sailing from Weymouth, so hopefully I'll be able to find somewhere to park amidst all the Olympics madness! I've got to check in at 0530 so hopefully there won't be too much traffic ;)

And yes, of course it'll be flat calm that weekend.

Jonny, I was wondering if you fancied leading a night dive one night?

Thats a nice idea mart. What night? ;)

I would be happy to take anyone who wants a buddy for building confidence, and the more experienced guys will probably be happy enough anyway if we set them off in the right direction [Alderney ;) ].

I think Beardy and GBO tend to be much more adventurous than me tho...
