Had a dive yesterday evening at Osmington. Water temp was 13c and so comfortable I was in for 4 hours. Shot one Bass that got off! Saw the biggest Bass I have seen so far but couldnt get the gun on it quick enough and this was in less than two metres of water. Ended up with a couple of Pollack for my tea. Lovely dive while the sun went down.

Well done on the fish mate. Sounds like a good dive. The water is really warm at the moment, and it's lovely staying in for a few hours especially with the sun on your back

First time spearfishing last night (between 8 and 9ish)at chesil cove. vis just a little under 2 meters. quite a few small fish but nothing worth getting. Overall went well. Bribed a couple of mates from work with beer to be spotters on the beach, but in hindsight should have given them the beer after i got out...not sure how much use they'd have been? But i survived for another day; soon hopefully.

Well done for getting wet mate. I think you would have ended up saving your mates instead of them saving you. The slopes on chesil mixed with beer and sunshine plays havoc on balance and walking/running capabilities

Dive last night with Tom:
Went fluff chucking over sunset and got myself 6 makeral. Darkness fell, suited up and jumped I the harbour as chesil had a very big swell and no vis. Vis in harbour was 2-3 meters and 4 in places.
Started of in our usual spot only to be me by the usual sea trout and millions of bait fish and a fair size cuttlefish; I took the cuttlefish as I have a BBQ tonight, but left the smaller ones.

Decided to swim over to a new bay at 11pm; on our way over I got collered by the Olympic officials; who were actually very polite "hello mate, we're security for the Olympics, are you fishing?" I replied and they asked for me to hold up my speargun, we had a friendly chat about bass or "sea bass" as they put it then they wished me good luck and off we went :).

Arrived at the new shallow bay and saw 2 bass, I miss and Tom hits one for dinner and he gets a cuttlefish. We swim on and I see some pout over a sand patch with big silver shadows just on the dye of vis, so I'm careful not to shine the light on them and slowly glide towards the fattest shape; mindful to keep the silver just on the edge of the beam. I get close enough for a shot, line up then shine the torch on him and bang! A lovely bass over 4lb, then promptly hit another smaller one just under 2lb. Tom also has similar success. I finish of by picking up a jumbo 5lb spidey.
I'll post some pics when I get to my PC; iPhone won't allow.

Hi Guys, I have never fished in Dorset before but coming down in mid June for a few weeks and was wondering fif there any good spots to go near Bournemouth. Haven't been fishing long but keen to try different places. What sort of fish you get down there ? Any help appreciated or if there is anyone that would like to show me the ropes and go for a cheeky fish that would be amaxing !
Thanks Alex

Great dive last night with Lee. So nice to get changed in beautiful hot weather! It's hard to believe that it's only a couple of weeks ago that we were shivering like crazy getting changed at the same spot.

Got in at one of our usual spots and hunted around for about an hour seeing nothing but an undersized bass and an oversized dogfish. Heading across to another spot to find...nada. Then Lee suggested a long swim over to another spot that we haven't tried before. So off we went. Along the way a nice 2.5lb bass swam across in front of me so I slipped him onto my stringer. Then a cuttle joined him. Then a medium size flounder. It always feels good to get a few fish on the stringer.

Then about 20 minutes later I was confronted with a good size (turned out to be just a smidge over 4lb) bass. I took my time, lined up the shot, and stoned it. Very happy with that one. In the excitement I then proceeded to drop my speartip followed by my torch. Oops :head

Missed a couple of other 3lb bass and a superfast 2-3lb torpeedo mullet.

On the way back in I swam directly over 2 very large cuttlefish. I thought perhaps Lee and I could take simultaneous shots and we could have one each, but by the time I'd found him (he'd pushed on ahead a bit) the cuttles had thought better of it and buggered off. Fair enough.

All in all, a great dive. Finally got home at 3am with 2 decent bass, one cuttle, and a flounder. Very happy with that :) And I still feel happy about it today even after my night of 2.5hrs sleep! :blackeye

Here are the 2 bass...

A legal question for you all:

My local pub has been taken over by some new friends of mine, and the chef has asked me to supply them with seafood (fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans) on an ad hoc basis.

They've already bought a large haul of mackerel and two 3lb and a 4lb spider crab that I got earlier on in the week, and they're keen to have some bass and mullet.

I said that the mackerel that I catch are line-caught and the crabs are hand-caught, but that the other fish are all speared and I've heard that it's illegal to sell speared fish in the UK. He was really surprised at this as he used to be a chef at the OXO tower and various other well-known places in London, and he said that all the best establishments frequently buy, advertise, and sell speared fish.

So does anybody know what the law actually says about this? Can you point me in the direction of some actual facts?

I know it's not spearfishing but it involves fish, so:

After spearfishing for the past 5 days running, I thaught I'd make the most of the strong winds and spend some time with the better half. I decide to try and "teach" her how to float fish for mackerel. After setting her line up I showed her how to bait up and made her do that, then showed her how to cast and let her loose. She was doing really well baiting up and castin by herself into a strong headwind an even managed to catch 2 mackerel before I had even set up. She even unhooked her own fish but couldn't break the necks.

By the end she was out fishing the lads using feathers, and I was really proud of her, until......... She out fished me aswel. Now it seems like not only my apprentice spearo buddies are out fishing me, now the mrs has to aswel : (

On the plus side an enjoyable few hours in the sun and by the sea

I know the Guernsey laws but, I believe it is illegal to sell any fish that have been speared in mainland England.

I think this has somthing to do with some archaic law based around using harpoons!

Spearo Dave was (is)the expert on this sort of thing and it has been discussed several time before, I had a quick hunt but couldn't find anything...

In Guernsey you cant sell anything caught from a boat unless the boat has a license but, you can sell any fish caught from the shore whatever the method - however the sale must be documented & declared to the tax man!

hi guys got in for a loan ranger dive this evening. with all this wind i decided to visit a spot i use to go to get bass on the floodin tide. this is my quick dive sopt. never had more than 2 bass per dive at this spot but i do enjoy it , this spot is mainly down to breath hold and holding out through massiv shoals of small pollock with the od 3lb pollock amoung them. once i drop down the pollock come in to investigate staying still and looking through the shoal a silver shape appears waiting for this silver shape to come closer i hold bottom with a few little throwt noises the silver shape comes closer to investigate as pollock r sticking around then a turn from mr bass that has said hello and BOOM!! mr bass is on the stringer. i only managed the 1 this time as mrs bass was smarter and knew somthing was up and wouldnt come closer.

all in all nice 1hour day dive and had a lovley bass of just a bit under 4lb at 3.8 lb happy with that. viz was a very welcome 2m with this wind but very bloomy.

my catch 3.8lb bass:)
