Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Well last time, if it had properly attacked us or cornered us when we tried outswimming it we would have shot it. And with 3 of us and powerful guns we would have probably killed it aswel. But I think dragging it back up the each would have been hard work and also I'm sure we would have got a few funny/disgusted looks

If i hadn't had pooed in my wetsuit i wouldn't probably think about dusgust looks but would save my life and speare it... Hehe

Yep..reckon that would be it for the reputation of spearfisherman. Best leave mr porbie.
I was out spearingi devon once and and came across a fresh dead baby seal...i was going to drag him out and ring the authorties etc.......however the beach was very busy and can u imagine their faces when they see a bloke with a speargun in one hand and a dead baby seal in the other.......needless to say i left it.

Yea I wouldn't normally think about shooting something like that, us spearfishermen have enough bad rep as it is. But if I was being attacked by it, and it was a case of me or mr porbie then I wouldn't hesitate at shooting it. But thinking about it that would probs be the most expensive spearfishing trip ill ever have, if I shot it I think I'd lose my gun and complete float setup. Not to mention antagonise the shark even more resulting in a full blown attack.

Just get it in a guillotine and hammer fist it to death next time

Ill have to look those moves up of YouTube and practice underwater in preparation for next years adventures.

Cheers for the heads up ill let you know if it works

Personally jump in. As two people are better than one in situations like that. I wonder if you timed it right and jumped on the shark if you would injure it/scare it off or antagonise it into attacking

Jump on the person, then make friends with the shark and trick it into showing you where the best spots are to find fish.

Cool,,,,i can do dynamic 25m no fins on two breathholds. Lol

Nice one mate, I'd be happy to help you get from 25m to the magic 30m - should be able to do that by holding your head under water for a bit longer ;)

What....you mean actually get my head wet????? Are you serious?

Hi Dan, welcome to the forum. I know quite a few of us who go out at this time of year. The water is warmer than the air, so it's alright once you're in.

I cover my car seats with a tarp and get changed in a hot shower at home. Lovely.

Where are you based? Could hook up for a dive sometime if you're not too far away.

A fair distance from me then, I'm based in South Somerset/West Dorset. Still, I'm sure there are people closer to you who get in during the winter.

Like I said, I (and quite a few others) go in all year round. I wear a 5mm suit with a 3mm vest underneath, and 5mm gloves and socks. Although I'm saving up for a custom-made 7mm suit soon so I can stay even warmer. The worst bit is getting changed outside, so I avoid that by driving down and back in my suit.

Having said that I decided against going diving last night (thanks to Lee for the viz report), and did some underwater lengths at my local pool. Lovely, but no fish.

Hi Dan.

I've recently decided to take up spearfishing and am not too far from you (Southbourne). I am still waiting on my 7mm wetsuit to arrive, once it does I'll be out when I can over the winter.

The sea is almost on my doorstep here - there may be times when I'll still head out even if there's no vis. I want to build up my fitness by finning on the surface whilst leaning or pushing my inflatable. I also want to build up a good knowledge about the close inshore currents which are not shown on charts.

I saw a woman go for a swim early this morning off the beach at Southbourne. She was only wearing a bathing suit - the sand was frozen solid!

Yes but women are hard ;). (I'm seriously impressed. The gulf stream water will probably feel relatively warm compared to when you come out - but I don't fancy it w/o a wetsuit. brhhh!)
