Dived the secret spot with 1 shot today and the vis was still pretty bad due to plakton and weed.Only saw a couple of bass and mullet but they saw me first:head

Lads, if you haven't sent an email yet then do so ref: South Wales Spearfishing ban, could affect us all in the long run!!!

3 metres ish

Could do with being a bit better.

Must be OK because I'm getting in again later.

never dived off the bill always been to scared of the race! whats church ope cove like? any chance of being sweped off to france from there? any help would be much appreciated thanks?? :t

Took Podge to the secret spot today.Nothing to report as the spot is such a closely guarded secret that not even the fish know where it is now:head The vis started off OK but as soon as the tide started to run the plakton came in and the vis went.

Time to try somewhere else next time...

Vis was nice down on the purbecks yesterday, speared a 4-5 lb bass yesterday and rod and lined 4 black bream today to 3lb. Nice to see that the may water has pissed off, we were getting vis of up to 9 meters, avaraging about 6. :)

Scottie, Church ope is a fairly straightforward shore dive, the further you go out, the stronger the current will get, although it runs parallel to the shore so you can play it as you like safe in the knowledge that you won't need your french phrasebook. There is a site somewhere (i think there is a link on portland oceaneerings page) that shows the tidal flows around portland at various stages of the tide, well worth a look. If you play it cautiously and don't jump into the race on a spring tide then the bill is certainly a good spot on its day, and alot of more experienced spearos swear by it. I usually do it only once or twice a year as i know a few other spots that are perfectly good and abit more user friendly..

had a great day on Sat - bass in the morning and mullet in the afternoon, just before (i'm assuming it was) Will and Flyflicker turned up - sorry I didn't say hi guys, was too knackered to swim out to the boat!! Viz was lovely. Sunday, got out on a boat for a bit of bream / mackerel fishing, and got a bream and several mackerel, also did a quick reconaissance dive a few hundred metres off Broad Bench from the boat. Great fun, with some beautiful little caves down there, but all the bass saw me first...

Glowworm thanks for the dive at the Secret Spot, although the blind fold was a bit much.:)
Shame the viz went a bit tits up but a good dive was most definitely had.
You should get my signed copy of the official secrets act through the post some time this week.rofl

Yes that was us Milkman, Will had a good bass and Ben got me a big crab - I shot at, but missed a bass; what a grand day and by the looks should have gone fishing with them on the Sunday!

Instead I had a dive in my secret spot, shot at and missed another bass :( then went over for breakfast with Podge & Glowworm before they headed off to their secret spot, off the coast of Dorset!

Went out Sunday. Visited a new spot in the Lulworth area.
Viz - excellent initially (upto 30ft+, milky), clouding to only fair as the tide (& fish) came in.
Weather - hot & sunny
Fish: 1 bass, 1 pollock
Fish seen: quite a lot

Saw lots of bait fish on the way out (some looked like perfect 10cm minnow lures, others were shiney silver & blue sandeels) but only 2 larger fish (a wrasse & a bass) and they saw me first. Further out encountered a huge dark coloured fish hiding in the weed -- but never got a good look. Saw only a few very small spider crabs (that's all I have seen this year). On the way back I got several difficult shots at various large fish that missed -- one went just over the top of the fish (which was slow to move on). Dived to to take a look at one fish when a bass suddenly passed through the fast tidal stream in front of me; bagged it as I ascended -- it happened very quickly. A good size fish (58cm, meal for 5) but saw several larger.

After I passed through the tidal stream, a small-medium size bass appeared. Shot & missed as it suddenly scooted on but then its friends turned up: I was surrounded by 5 or 6 bass in the small-medium range. I re-loaded as quickly and as unexcitedly as I could muster; they hung around until I raised the speargun but scooted off into the increasing milkiness as soon as I started to squeeze the trigger.

Headed back in, then decided to take one more look for the school of bass. I never did find them again but on the way back out I swam over and past a very large fish - darn saw it too late, I was beyond it and it was gone. Then, immediately, I saw another - again, very large and hiding in the weed at the bottom; shot and missed. Hard to see in the murk from above but they looked like large bass in size and colour although the front on one appeared more rounded than I expected; another spearo reckoned he saw big mullet, so perhaps big mullet.

The bass seen were all (bar one) in fast moving water.

Chatted with 3 other spearos that I met:wave, although only one was diving that day. A good time was had by all.

Only the ruedest of words could speak my frustration and i dnt think it exits yet... so how got away from the girl frend and london only to find mudy water.

So does any on know of any were close to a train station werth fishing for tomore? coming from christchurch

I was thinking weymouth,???/

That is fantastic Mr x, how much do you think the bass weighed? How did you cook it? What about the pollock, I really enjoy eating fresh small pollock (2-3lb) I like the delicate texture & subtle flavour.

Jimy

We spent this morning working our way along the North arm of Portland Harbour wall. Viz on the outside was awful and only a couple of bass seen (too late!) As we neared the entrance the viz improved, murky but good enough... We saw loads of mullet and loads of schoolies. Working our way back to shore along the inside of the wall we saw a couple of better bass but my shots were famously wide of the target! We also saw garfish and mackerel. Not a bad dive considering we came home with nothing so you could do worse then trying here.

Went down to Portland Oceanering this morning to get a couple of odds n sods, on the way down saw a guy spearing in the harbour next to the New Sailing Academy, anyone from here? If so Any good?

I'm finally getting my act together and getting back in the water this week after a very long break.

Steve

Scottie we all had a good day mate, my legs are aching sssoooo bad this morning.
How were the scallops? And what did you do with them?
Buy the time I got home and cleaned all the kit I was to knackered to do anything with them so I took the lot spider crab and all down to my local Indian take away and swapped the lot for a curry.

Had a lovely day out yesterday as reported by podge and scottie. Weather was kind for a change and vis wasnt too bad in places awful in others. Got a couple of flatties and a few scallops for diner. Saw one bass, only a fleeting glimpse tho! 3 1/2hr journey back to london wasnt a lot of fun but still felt very relaxed and at peace when i got home. Must be all the deep breathing and holding breath. It really is good for the soul....and monday morning sanity!

btw me and my friend barry both saw a couple of small fish (3-4") that were tucked up under some rocks that were bright orange bodied and black from the gills forward. Never seen anything like it before, more akin to something you'd see abroad. Any ideas anybody?
