No worries mate. I was out a bit further around from the cove early morning but didn't see much, I was hoping as the sun came up higher the mullet shoals would pass through but alas not today. Glad you enjoyed your dive all the same tho. Spearfishing around here is a bit strange at the moment, the fish that should be in aren't yet or they are very skittish and not shoaling properly. Even people that dive regularly during the day aren't seeing or shooting as many fish as usual, but keep up the good work and I'm sure you'll be rewarded for your efforts

Going to jump in for a couple of hours over the high tide tonight. Was thinking about the local shallow reef as the tide is good (2100ish) but maybe issues of beach users at that time of night so might head up to Portland. Would consider a small section of Chesil but not done it before so might leave that for when I have more time? Any suggestions for a nice 2hr twighlight spear an hour or so either side of high tide?!?
There are plenty of quality fish out there for the taking; you just need to dive 30m or swim for 9hrs.
Short dives are a bit hit or miss at the moment.
I agree that the fish aren't here in as many numbers yet
Mike, I would try in shallow chesil cove to H bay for some mullet bashing.

Im currently on a beach nr swanage with the family; however I left a 45cm gun and have my kids snorkel and mask in the van....so decided to get in with just my shorts and no fins etc....
Seriously I must be a bass magnet; first dive and I took a 3lb bass. Second dive seen a large shoal, held on to some kelp, a few more bigger ones swam by....then the biggest bass ive seen so far this summer, must have been 12lb or more I took a shot but it was just out of range of my 45cm gun, I'm gutted!!!!
I would have loved to have seen your faces after seeing pics of me holding up a 12lb bass in shorts, on a busy yourist beach with a kids bright yellow mask!!!

Nice... It is always like that that you see mamoth fish when witch no gun. How is vis near swanage now??? I went to chesil cove this morning. 10m at least!!! Only spooked one 5-6 pounder bass and ended up with 3pound lobby . No other fish around apart from nice big wrasses.

Bass from earlier. Managed another 2-3lber and a better one of 4.5lb.
All fish shot in daytime in a pair of speados, no fins, no wetsuit,my daughters ill fitting yellow snorkel and mask and a 45cm gun.
Managed 8m (cold down there) and holds of around 1:20. I think day dives will be free spirit half naked ones from now on.

So got in at Chesil cove at around 2030 last night. vis was great and water temp is coming along too! swam left and out over the kelpy sandy patches and saw some big wrass but nothing else. had Chris's (Slicky) 110cm gun which i was very impressed with.
so ended up testing lung capacity and was diving to around 9m and sitting on the bottom chilling out! was regularly hitting 50second and was close to 1min at times. so something to work on!
Will be in one night this weekend and hope to get a good long session this time. so if anyone fancies it let me know. keen to try some new locations!
good luck if you do go in, vis off chesil was between 6-10m at a guess. further out in 9-10m water I could make out the kelp and sand in slightly more than dark and light patches from the surface (if that makes sence!). water in the bay (weymouth) looked pretty damn good over the weekend too.

Cheers...I'm hoping to graduate up to a 'bream magnet' by next year
Hopefully we should start seeing more blacks, red mulet, gurnards and triggers now. Hopefully we'll get a trigger over the weekend mate.

Staying in N devon with Alan and the families and friends.
Alan and I nipped off tonight for a quick little bass hunt. Not to bad as it turns out, with the average stamp of bass being 6-8lb with a few double figure ones to keep us busy.
We had 12 mouths to feed for sat nights BBQ; I think we have succeeded.
Smallest fish of the night was just under 6lb, plenty of 5lbers about, but we'd had our quato for the night so left them be.
