Can someone give me the lowdown on portland harbour please?
Just had a look at the website for them, can i enter the harbour and move around/anchor up and get out of the boat ? Seems that some pwc's require a permit, you can only enter/exit via the north entrance and speed limits apply. Will i be hassled if i stay in the northern area ? What about fishing off the boat also ?

If the harbour master is on a power trip they will ask you for your permit. A lot of people don't bother with it tho. It has been known for boats to be stopped as soon as they enter the harbour and a permit requested. However a lot of people have gotten away with not buying one. There are a couple of sites to launch from include castle town slipway, and sandsfoot beach, these are both free. Or if you contact the sailing academy they may allow you to launch from there for a fee. I'm not so sure if blue water horizons are still operating but they used to launch boats into ferry bridge for a fee.
It's a risk you take really. In not sure what the penalty is if your caught without a license. I personally would be tempted to risk it for a biscuit and go hunting.

Thanks - just try and keep a low profile then basically, and play a bit dumb if challenged. I guess picking quiet times to be there also may help like weekdays rather than a weekend.

I don't get in as much as I used to due to work commitments abroad, so when I do manage to get in I like to remain in the water for as long as possible (sometimes up to 6 hours). Because you've got a fair distance to travel, you might find that you are of a similar mindset.
I would usually still be in a 7mm at this time of the year (probably all the way round to June in fact), and switch to a 5mm later on.
The problem for me is that my 7mm Omer is a bit stiff and restrictive, and my 5mm Elios yamamoto isn't warm enough - even at the height of summer I can still get hypothermic in the 5mm, if I stay in for hours on end.
So for the last couple of seasons I've been promising myself that I am going to invest in a really soft and flexible 7mm yamamoto neoprene that I can use all year round. I know a few people that have now gone down the 7mm soft neoprene suit route for year round use, and I'm gonna follow them.
You'll be OK in your Cressi Technica for a while, so definitely worth coming down, but at this time of the year you will eventually get cold - all depends on how long you want to stay in (and everyone feels the cold at different rates anyway: I'm a bit of a pussy, you might be a bit more robust).
You'll be able to stay in for longer and longer as the year goes on, so getting in now, in your new suit, will give you a yardstick of what to expect as the season progresses.

I love my 6mm Elios. When I bought my first suit lots of people said 5mm was great all year round but I'm a tall skinny type and I found it a bit cold. 6mm is great for all but the hottest summer day and even then all I need to do is pull the suit open a little now and then to allow a bit of cold water to flush through.
I have a 5mm picasso that fits a treat I've never felt the cold in it, just fingers and toes. Compared to my cressi it is the porche of suits and my cressi a mondeo. I have a 3mm RA suit for june - november I would compare it to a top range vw.
I would say the tighter the suit u can tolerate, the better.

That's it mate. If you want to dive the walls try to dive the outside of the wall as they don't mind that too much. Keep us posted how you get on
if we are talking about suits and warmth... what gloves and socks are U using guys? my gloves are leaking so badly that i could so without them... it would be same cold. and i have got 3mm socks that I use all year round (bit cold but OK and thicker wont fit my fin foot pockets)
I have noticed that when i stopped weeing in my suits it is warmer.. (and doesn't smell so badly after dive)hahaha

The Mares Tri-Lastic 3/5mm are an excellent spearfishing glove. A 5mm glove for warmth, with a 3mm underside for the dexterity required of spearfishing. They also have a smooth skin wrist to help enable sealing with your open-cell spearfishing suit.
If you buy them new now they will be nice and warm, and can then still be worn later in the season when they begin to wear through.

You gotta get bigger fin pockets for the winter.
I use a completely different fin for the winter: bigger pocket for a pair of 7mm socks, and softer blade to combat the stiffening effects of the cold - ooh err missus' !!! :chatup

Make sure you order the 5/3mm, and not the 3/2mm, or you will be defeating the object.
As far as size is concerned, you are welcome to try on a pair of mine next time you are in Dorset, before you order on-line (although personally I would try to find a shop that I can walk into and try before I buy).
Remember: 5/3's, not 3/2's!!!

Do you reckon you add another 1mm and still retain the required flexibility?

For me, they are a necessary evil - it enables me to remain in the water for longer. I'm thinking about trying one of those weight harnesses, to see if that makes things a bit more comfortable, regarding the extra lead.

It's Heiwa neoprene. I've not tried a yamamoto to compare but I find it nice and flexible. It's certainly more flexible than my Diveskin 5mm was.
