Hi everyone.

I just joined up as I'm looking for some like minded spearfishing buddy's and some advise on location and tactics in British waters. I was living in Australia and spearfished for four years and was a member of a club. I'm really missing diving as much as I was but I try to go as much I can. I've been to bognor regis and portland since I've been back but as always a bit of local knowledge helps, so any advise would be appreciated. I'm also aware of the dangers of portland and already take safety seriously. Many thanks. Mick.

Hey Mick,

I'll be diving off the Bill a lot this summer so if you fancy it sometime let me know... its very tidal but there are many good places on both east and west side.

Any chance you mind me tagging along? I only started last year and haven't been off the bill yet. Woody

With the sheltered winds last week, I finally decided I was fed up with being cold after an hour in a 5mm suit, so after reading some of the reviews on here, decided to splash out on a picasso 7mm suit from picasso uk. got in a few times since last week and WOW was amazed how warm it is. longest session was a 3 hour night dive and didn't get even slightly cold, and I normally get cold pretty quickly (only saw a couple of small bass and a small lobster, so still haven't managed first fish of the year yet). only slight downside is the extra lead that I now have to lug around, but definitely a sacrifice worth making. also managed to get stuck trying to get it on the first time and had to call the missus to help me out, seems to be easier to get on and off after a few dives though.
Big thanks to portland spearo too for the next day personal delivery service. would definitely recommend picasso suits to anyone looking for a new/warmer suit.

Personally I find 7mm to thick, and use 5mm most of the year.. When I'm feeling brave in the summer my 3mm suit comes out as it's like heaven with so little weight and no movement restriction.

I use a 5mm all year round & is a little cold in the winter months, even though I have an inner vest that adds to the insulation. At best I last about 2 and a half hours on a night dive, which is probably plenty. My hands & feet do tend to get cold first, but I end up doing a speed swim for a bit to get the circulation going again. Like many, I haven't been in this year. My dive buddy has a 7mm & I think he dives all year round in it, but he is Spanish though.

I use a 6mm. I'm tall and thin so lack natural insulation. My previous suit was 5mm. The extra 1mm really makes a difference but doesn't require too much extra lead.

Thanks Portland spearo. I look forward to it. My brother has a rib we could bring to if it's needed. Can't wait now. All I wanna do is get in now.

Portland spearo, do you sell Picasso gear. If so I think I may have met up and bought a gun of you last summer.

I use 5 mil suit in summer and 7 in winter. When I breath up and relax properly I need decent insulation to keep warm. 7 is more restricting but I need to keep warm for better bottom time.

I think ill end up wearing my 7mm (or ar least the top) most of the year as i get cold in the summer on long dives and I find once i start getting cold my breath hold gets rapidly shorter. Although my old 5mm suit wasnt great so a decent one would probably make a huge difference. Or i guess i could eat a few more pies to give me some natural insulation...

Thanks guys. I'd happily take warmth over manoeuvrability. I've already been stacking multiple suits, so I guess I'll probably be used to it. Sounds like 7mm is a good way to go for all year round stuff.

from June onwards I just go at it in my pants or lime green speedos.
