Durban diving 2008

So I got my wish... went fishing Sunday cos the vis wasn't great and somewhere between the launch, the rain and the spray from the boat I managed to get very wet.

Though I will admit that I did deserve it on the launch for forgetting the cigarettes on the counter at the store...

As far as success goes I've had better (much better) but as far as enjoyment goes it was up there with my Moz trip last year.

Managed to get a bit of a spear in on Sunday. I got 5 guys together and we took my family boat out (I inherited it at the end of last year when they all left the country). She's a dam boat. Literally :) (though we've modified her for the ocean and spearo's)

We had a jol while it lasted but then the motor quit on us for no apparent reason... and she'd just been serviced last week!! In all the years she's been in the family we've never ever had a problem with the motor. Things got interesting at this stage as the wind was blowing us on to the shore but we hollered for help and some fishermen came to tow us a bit out to sea where we anchored while we tried to sort things out.

Needless to say, there was no sorting anything out. Dead as a doornail she was. We called NSRI for a tow back but nobody was answering the phones. Fortunately I have some friends at NSRI who we were about to start harrassing on their pleasant Sunday morning, duty or no duty, when another (bigger) boat of fisherman came up to us and offered us a tow back around the Bluff.

On arrival back at the ski boat club we discovered there was some comp on... Imagine the highlight of our morning - being towed back to shore in the middle of a competition, people rushing up to the boat to see what we'd caught when in fact we weren't participating at all...

The guys who towed us back were the most amazing people though. We offered them petrol or money or whatever they wanted for going so out of their way for us but they would have none of it. They simply unhooked us and went on their merry way. No doubt to try catch some more fish for the competition!

hi Calli I hope you've learn t your lesson on secondary propulsion where were your oars or sail ;)

Is there anyone doing any spearing before work I'm keen to get in the water a bit more often but I'm a little hesitant to get in the water early bells by myself.

Not at the moment, my weeks are hectic with orientation and registration at the varsity, there's not much time for anything else right now... Trying to promote the underwater club whilst doing my real job on campus is proving to be a juggling act second to none. Unfortunately getting to work on time is one of those things that just has to be done since I'm often ducking and diving during the day (pardon the pun, hee hee)

Hey all

Planning a trip to Sodwana next weekend (13-16 March). We're going to do a bit of spearing, a bit of SCUBA, a bit of sundowners at Lake Sibaya, a bit of party and a bit of other fun and games... as the fancy takes us.

We have a group of people already signed up and if our regular club nights are anything to go by this trip is going to be epic, both in and out the water.

Don't let your significant other hold you back - we'll have other activities for them to participate in if they don't do the water thing...

Let me know if you are keen to come along

Anyone keen to spear north coast this weekend? Umdloti - Selection Reef perhaps?

Pity you didn't join us this weekend, vis was terrible but the guys shot snoek and a couple reefies. Was pretty good all round. Went out Sat and Sun (I didn't go Sun - was seconding 4 ppl for Comrades).

Would you like me to add you to our mailing list - or have I already?

Im sorry I missed it it sounds like it was quite a productive dive unfortunately I had some chores that had to get done on sat morning and I probably shouldn't have really been looking at going anyway as I was still recovering from a bout of flu that hit me last Tuesday probably why I was battling to equalize the previous weekend. anyway Im feeling strong again and should be ready for this weekend.

BTW I am bust with a new project im building a new boat and most of the parts are cut out and partly assembled and ill hopefully start glassing this week Im hoping to have it ready for its first water trials by next weekend. Feels good to be back into boat building

Huzit Durban people! I'm going to be heading up to Durban and the South Coast on some kind work holiday during June. Does anyone know of any kind of freediving charters that operate around Aliwal shoal - or the sardine run? I'll be taking my freediving gear with me (maybe spearing stuff as well), and would like to do at least one cool freediving mission - and hopefully quite a bit of spearing.

Any bunch of regulars that go out often to freedive or spear that I could hook up with for a session?

Just trying to get rough idea of what's happening up there : ]
