I'm gutted I haven't had a gurnard, black bream, red bream or guilthead. I've had red mullet rip off and let one be (I thought it was small at 1lb ish, but then realised that was perfectly sizeable) missed guilthead, and black bream and left gurnard alone as again I assumed I would see a bigger one. Grrrr think I may have to get the coastguard number on speed dial and just man up against these winds ha.

Still a few days left tho lee and its close so it's all to play for

Ive seen a gilthead, but to small and missed 4 very nice sized blacks all at the same as your turbot on seperate occassions. Seen brill in the harbour the size of beer bottle lids, seen a turbo at swanage by my brother stole it. No cod white bream or red gurnard seen yet.

How about next year we have just the fish that were not on this comp.

Pouting
Garfish
Makeral
John dory
Scad
Top knot???? Is it ok to keep these
Anglerfish
Dentex etc

My brother had a topknot that was 1.5oz off the British record, we didn't realise until I'd filleted it ha. The anglerfish an dentex would be a challenge to even see one let alone shoot one

I've seen a fair few topknots this year from west bay to ringstead sat on rocks. Nothing huge but looked takeable. Decided to let them be as i did not know much about them or the law regarding spearing them and/or size limits.

I've caught an anglerfish once on rod and line from the bristol channel.

That's when the fish of winter competition starts : ) then it runs until march.

A friend I spear with swears he saw an anglerfish on a dive on the north coast of Ireland. Not deep water either. I have no reason not to believe him. He didn't spear it because he didn't know what it was until he described it to us and looked at photos.

I caught an anglerfish in my fishing net in a rockpool at Jacobs ladder (Sidmouth) when I was 9. It was in the local paper!

Not last year I have the trophy to prove it, not been in months because of work and baby commitments. I was hoping the comp was still running in November, to give me a chance of winning one of those lovely wooden rays!

Hmmm interesting, I'm probably wrong but I assumed the fish of winter competition started in November. I know they do a fish of winter as I won that for last year/this year. I know what you mean about those lovely trophies, I quite fancy one myself but so far they have eluded me. Maybe next year

I seemed to have avoided winning the fish of the month too.

With an 8lb 7oz bass, 8lb 3oz mullet, 14lb ray, 3lb sole. Just not good enough to win with others getting far better catches.

I'm going to have yet another go for these elusive bream tomoro alarm set for 5:30am, just hope there is some blooming vis. I have 3 spots to try and have till 3pm.

Another plan is a midweek campervan 2 day trip/invasion to N Devon for a turbot and brill with surfboards on tow. Light easterly winds with a small clean groundswell.

But.....i reckon Mike has this comp; well done mate :)

Yes Speerolee , you have been very close to winning, and I can hardly believe that 14lb ray did not win !!! I voted for it and even though you have not won I bet you have had more self caught seafood meals than anyone else on here this year !!!!

guys the fom is March to October this year, its probably in one of the very early threads. I would be happy to go one more month but we dont have an agreement from the sponsors for November and they and Mirror have been extremely generous already. So lets just go with the planned fom dates and you get november to find the FOtW :) I hope thats ok...

we will have a Fish of the Year comp to sort out yet; do you think this should be a vote from ALL of the FOM entries, or just from the FOM winnners?

If you have some suggestions for next years FOM then please do let us know; a few 'thinkers' for you: species list for the speccie hunt, minimum sizes for fom and speccie hunt [increasing above legal min], day only, excluding mullet, ...
get your thinking caps on... the above are just ideas, no rights and wrongs...
how can we make it more competitive and yet more ethical?

If anyone knows any potential sponsors then sound them out, and let the DB staff know... thanks :)

Ok
My thaughts are to increase the min size on the specci comp, perhaps change it to a 'specimen comp' e.g. bass over 7lb, mullet over 5lb, flounder over 2lb etc, have less species of better quallity, say bass pollack mullet flounder plaice bream and turbot.

I think it would be difficult to discriminate between the disciplines e.g. boat shore night day deep shallow geographocal location pump or banded gun gps etc etc. Everyone has their preffered way to spearfish, so i think if you rule one out, then one would open a whole can of worms to debate as to why other disciplines should also not be discreditted.

I do feel that all us spearos should discourage taking fish that are only just within the legal limit. I for one have taken fish over the legal limit that i would have normaly left to grow bigger (tub gurnard) but took just one for the specci comp, however I must add that it was eaten and enjoyed the next day by my daughter. So a specimen comp would suit me better.

My dad is a well known contemp artist; indulges in both sculptures and painting in various mediums. I will ask him if he would like to donate.....it's wortha try:)
