F.O.M./F.O.Y. discussion thread for 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I must say I agree with lee, I think it is unfair to differentiate between boat diving an shore diving as different people have different diving preferences, I personally feel a lot better if I catch a fish from the shore that is bigger than the same fish being caught from a boat as I believe it is more of a challenge. But also some people do not have access to a boat or local shore dive venues. Also I think a specimen comp would be a good idea as then it promotes a more ethical approach to spearfishing with regards to size limits etc as I did contemplate shooting fish that I wouldn't normally even bother with. I think also then you can determine a fish of the year based upon the percentage of specimen caught. Then also the smaller species such as red mullet stand a good chance of winning against fish that are a lot heavier eg big bass.

That said I did enjoy planning my dives around specific species and I dived locations I wouldn't normally think of to target individual species.

It's definitely not over for 2012, .......still time to catch a couple more species, weather permitting!

I love the species hunting aspect, it added a new challenge,made me think, and hope it continues next year.That said, I totally agree that inrceasing weight/size limits is the way forward.


Next year, Jersey's Club Apnea (on facebook) will be introducing a local version of the species/specimen hunt and will be setting increased minimum size/weight limits.
We will also be restricting entries to day caught fish only.


This local comp (Jsy divers only) will be in addition to whatever DB decide and we hope that this might also encourage a few more Jsy divers to take part in the UK DB comps. I hope to be entering both! I will also try to get that elusive FOM!


Even better will be the 2013 DB Gnsy Fish in in August, hopefully we shld have at least 5-6 travelling from Jsy and hope to see u there.

I'm hoping I can still catch 3 species enforce the end of the month, but the weather is stopping me venturing out as we've had nothing but brown water big swells and gale force winds for weeks now. I hope you get better weather than we've had recently mate and keep up the good spearing you've been doing
 
OK so for next years specimen hunt, can we discuss the species & suggest the target or minimum weights...

I would personally take away white bream and brill as they are very rare and not a species I believe can be targeted specifically. Also I would remove dab as I believe a lot of undersized plaice/flounder will be speared trying to get one.

Weights for fish:
Bass 3.5lb
Black bream 2lb
Gilthead bream 2.5lb
Cod 3lb
Flounder 1.5lb
Mullet 3lb
Golden grey mullet 1.5lb
Red mullet 8oz
Red gurnard 8oz
Tub gurnard 1lb
Plaice 1.5lb
Pollack 2lb
Sole 1.5lb
Trigger 2lb
Turbot 1.5lb

Just my personal suggestion off the too off my head
 
Thats great mate, that is what we want - lots of suggestions so we can work out a finale list.....
 
Well the weights I've suggested are just my personal opinion ibviously. But I feel they are a decent size for the particular species. They are not so small that you will see and be able to shoot loads, but they are not impossible either. Just at the top end of what I consider average size, and a good eating size
 
I agree with Matt to take off brill, white bream and dab, replace with garfish, mackeral and scad, these are very common and plentyful fish, but an absoloute booger to hit due to speed, so a realistic challenge.

I did enjoy the specci comp this year....

I didn't bother getting up early for those bream in the end....blooming vis!!

The only thing with garfish and scad is they are generally not considered eating fish (I know the French eat garfish). I agree it is a good way to determine a spearos shooting accuracy but it goes against the common opinion of shooting fish to eat, and then moves into shooting fish just or fun or competition, which will undoubtedly give critics another reason to tarnish those involved.
 
I eat gars and scad; both really tasty...i suppose it's not unlike the earing grey mullet debate....try it;)

Just an idea and it might be a bit off the wall, but if you shoot it you gotta cook it and the plate of food should carry some points as well. Pics and recipe to accompany the report?
 
JKS a lovely Turbot, inspite of driving rain,hail and force 7 winds, was worth the effort and well deserved.

Right then guys, well done on the numerous FOM entries this last year!
We have a couple of days for the last October entries to have the chance to be entered, then i'll put up the October poll.
What about the Winter comp? do you want me to put up a FOtW page already?
say November - February inclusive. Next FOM in March???

Do you all want to vote on the Fish of the Year based on just the FOM winners, or based on ALL of the FOM entries this year? or all the FOM entries that got at least 1 vote...

My view on this is that it should stay the way it is. You have to win a FOM in order to be entered into the FOY otherwise the FOM would be pointless!

Definitely keep it the same :):):):)

Personally i'd run another month for FOM to include. November as there ars still some good fish about. But no need for prizes as the guys have been way to generous already.

Run FOW december-feb inclusive.

Also was thinking...instead of specci comp next year to run a comp for biggest 3 of the following species; 1st 2nd 3rd, then winners can be entered into the HOF, if apropriate at the end of November.
