I must say I agree with lee, I think it is unfair to differentiate between boat diving an shore diving as different people have different diving preferences, I personally feel a lot better if I catch a fish from the shore that is bigger than the same fish being caught from a boat as I believe it is more of a challenge. But also some people do not have access to a boat or local shore dive venues. Also I think a specimen comp would be a good idea as then it promotes a more ethical approach to spearfishing with regards to size limits etc as I did contemplate shooting fish that I wouldn't normally even bother with. I think also then you can determine a fish of the year based upon the percentage of specimen caught. Then also the smaller species such as red mullet stand a good chance of winning against fish that are a lot heavier eg big bass.
That said I did enjoy planning my dives around specific species and I dived locations I wouldn't normally think of to target individual species.
