Nice one guys. Cheers for that, i'm glad i didn't bid now :D I just looke dat the d4 and it looks pretty cool but quite expensive, is it like anything... if you buy good it'll last a lot longer, and will cost the same in the long run as it would buying 4 cheaper ones over the time that the decent one would last?

What about this one:
[ame=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Northern-Diver-Aurora-Rechargeable-Dive-Torch-NEW_W0QQitemZ220121077035QQihZ012QQcategoryZ29575QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem]eBay.co.uk: Northern Diver Aurora Rechargeable Dive Torch - NEW (item 220121077035 end time 21-Jun-07 18:31:03 BST)[/ame]

Or should I just quit trying to cut corners and just order a D4?

Cheers,
Huw

The Northern diver looks like a reasonable torch, but I would be wary of buying 'unknown' makes. I know that northern diver are respect drysuit manucturers, but their torch looks like a rebranded job to me.

I'm sure that they are good torches but, IMHO buying an established brand like underwater kinetics (who I can remember from the 1970's) is taht you know spares are and will be available in the future.

Put my gear in the car today and planning a dive after work 4 days 4 dives woo hoo

Its worth spending a bit more on torches to get something decent. That Aurura looks fine, but one concern would be the battery life at 20W. It says 2.4 hours at 10W, so you won't have that long at 20. I'm not sure about the batery life of the D4 either, though others could say, a C or D8 would certainly last longer.

PM'd you a few links. I bought an IST 20W from that same bloke on ebay so took a bit of a risk, was around £100, but its great, don't think they do them anymore though.

I went for the Fa & Mi power 40 W LED torch and it does the job. Uses 4 AA batteries and burn time is about one hour 40 until you notice a bit of fade off - after that the light level degrades gracefully - never been in for more than about 2 hours and has worked well for that time.
Think it was about £130 of the web.
I like it as it is solid machined metal and small and only uses 4 AA's and the light is very white... having said that I love the disco effects that Tom has with his torch :)

Interesting, er, feature that eh! (Its got these LEDS in the back that start flashing red, green, blue and yellow when its got 30% battery life left, usually about 1hr40mins or so)

OK it gets worse!!

In again this evening after detour to shop to buy mineral water and shower gel (forget to take lube in car). Planned to visit trigger fish reef area. No problem swam out to the point, lots of big rockies. Was taking imaginary shots at them.........when..........bang I thought the gun had fired.

No .....one of the rubbers had come out if the wishbone fitting.

On the swim back I inevitably saw a couple of decent bass :vangry

It can only get better:) :)

Never mind Andy, at least you can look forward to lots of decent viz over there. We've had one reasonable weekend here in south Wales so far, but it's gone again with the rain and swell.

Managed to try my Fuji F10 out though.

Still got to learn how to use it best underwater, but got a few OK pics, see below. I'm looking forward to clearer water later in the summer.

Looking forward to getting back to Guern for a couple of weeks in August - hope I can see those I met last year again, and maybe meet a few new faces. I haven't had a night dive since last time I was over - except a solo one in Crete which was an exercise in fear control.

See you soon:)

Huw, there is an extensive thread on spearo torches last year that you might want to take a look at (more info. on torches than is healthy:)). With the rapid improvement of LED torches, it's probably a little out of date. I got lucky last year and found an unused and unwanted 10W Omer Moonlight Elite on eBay - I could probably have got it cheap for less than 5 pounds (as Scuba divers don't seem familiar with the Omer brand...and it is a spearo torch with auto-off spring in the switch) - but decided to make a more generous offer to end the auction & avoid the risk of losing it (win-win). I also got 2 UK Q40 mask torches (only wanted one ... but handy to have a spare & could use both at once, and the prices were good).

Might try a late dive in the Summer on hols., to see if I can find a flattie.

BTW You can buy rechargeable batteries & charger from 7dayshop.com on Guernsey; cheaper & better (2300mA/hr vs. 1300mA/hr) than buying the rechargeable version of the Omer torch. Regular batteries seem to last ages tho' & operate at a slightly higher voltage.

It looks a little like the second hook of the pennel swung around and caught his gill plate during the fight and then ripped out towards the end of the fight or something, the second hook must have foul hooked him on the other side in about the same place and foul hooked don't count... :)

Don't know what it all means ADM, but sounds very convincing to me!

Just for the record, none of the spots we get decent bass at are accessible or fishable for rod danglers - they'd lose all their tackle. And the fish have all moved on now from Grand Havre and Les Pecqueries - Belle Greve is the place to be!

HI Guys,

Thought I would post this here before going out to the wider deeperblue audience:

Incredibly, my wife had given me a pass to go on holiday to the Red Sea for a week in early August. Last time we went to Hurghada in Jan 2006, my oldest daughter got quite ill so we spent a lot of time in the hotel room (well they did, I went freediving!). As such she is not keen to go again.

I would go by myself, but would prefer to have a freedive buddy along with me for safety, and also because I enjoy freediving much more when with a buddy.

So, I am looking for someone to join me on a holiday to the Red Sea. I would prefer a non-smoking, non-snoring person. Also, someone who is really enthusiastic about freediving and safety would be excellent. I have been to Sharm, Dahab, and Hurghada and would recommend Sharm again. Dahab is a day trip really.

Costs once off the island would be around £750 all inclusive I figure. If you go to lastminute.com, you can get a pretty excellent hotel for under £700, usually all inclusive. So the most important thing is to pick a hotel with a good house reef. Then you can spend a couple hundred pounds on excursions, also known as dive trips. As I have done two trips the red sea already, I have an idea on how to organise trips in the area with guides. All in, if you budgeted £1,000, you would certainly come home with change.

So, if anyone is interested, please send me a private message.

Did I mention that the diving is flipping amazing there?

George.

Err, sorry, again, but they are.
I'd agree, you'd be surprised where we fish and how rough the bottom is in some places where you think we'd lose gear. No problem as long as we have a chance of getting the fish back, lead loss not a problem. Sometimes lose a set of gear a chuck but easy to get just a fish back through it compared to hook and lead.

OK but it has been said many times before that the spearing spots aren't necessarily good for other types of fishing, and vice-versa. And it looks like all the fish have disappeared for now. Also it's getting rough again!:vangry

Nice plaice Draenog - the most we ever seem to see is an eye or a spot ( those of us that can spot them - not including me!):)

One thing though Sarnian, I can't cast 200yds with or without bait....... and I know a lot of what is had in some places is well out of Job Bloggs casting range. Some places I am yet to work out how to fish and bring the fish back. It's weed that's a bigger issue than rocks and as such a lot of bass areas are a big problem for us.

I should add. that's why I am now donning suit and heading out with pointy stick a la Monty Python except in my case the fish have had the training denied the boys...

Oh oh oh want to use a spear gun do we, oh mater, where's the graand piaano...

(sorry)

Yes, I agree, the places I saw fish recently were a long way out, with loads of weed in between - in fact it's hard enough to swim through it. I did actually see a few rod danglers coming back across a certain causeway, but I think they'd been fishing off the seaward side. They did look a bit empty handed too.

The distance is not a problem and if you use a fine braid it cuts straight through that weed.

Anyway, back to the diving, guess who couldn't resist anymore and bought a D3...
