In today, saw a gilthead, missed it.

ARSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needed to calm down a bit first mate. :head

Well went somewhere today to scout it out for the fishing spec hunt.

Looked murky from the shore but thought sod it, in for a penny...

Murky it was in anything less than 2 metres, couldn't see the end of the gun type stuff. Cleared a little a bit deeper, but not much, some clearer patches, but mostly 2-3m max.

At the target area started doing aspettos in 5-6m over sand with weed patches. Lots of gg's mooching about but left them all alone. On one dive I was moving along when I disturbed a shoal of something silver that scattered before I got a good look in the murk. Very unmullet like scattering, think they might have been black bream but will never know.

Then I was lying there behind some weed on the bottom in 6m watching the mullet slide past when a very boxy shaped fish cruised in from my left side, the gold band on the nose was immediately clear despite the murk, lined up the mamba, and shot me bolt straight over its head. Absolutely gutted.

Wasn't huge, 3lbs I'd guess, but thats not the point.

Spent another 15mins diving the same area with nothing more showing itself and couldn't stand it anymore. Hauled out and sat on some rocks for a while contemplating what could have been.

Unlucky mate!! Best watch for people following you leaving the car park after the registration!! Not me BTW, got to go somewhere else.

Tom, interesting following the reports I'd heard of gilthead ( and Couch's I think) in the Grande Havre area. Not that I saw any, but at least I've seen more fish in the past week or so than recently. :)

Hello Chaps

Did a spot of night diving on friday which turned out to be a stunner! Great visability and loads of fish. I didn't have any scales to way the sole or bass in the picture, but I'm sure the sole was over three pounds, biggest I've seen yet! Also had three red mullet and a smaller sole. I took a night-club newbie who was pretty delighted with the four sole he took home too.
On a slightly different note - a fisherman friend of mine had a big sunfish float up to his boat off st.martins point last week. He's got some pretty decent footage on video, I'll post it as soon as I can get a copy.

Pete

Nice fish Beetroute!

There appear to be some unusual fish around at the moment - specimen spearfishing hunt ? ( still caught only to eat of course).

(p.s. any of you Rick Steins got a good recipe for fish pie / suggestions as to which fish? Am defrosting some mullet and wrasse. Previously used mullet which was quite successful)

Cor la, you've done alright out of that! I'm always tempted by carbons...What stiffness are the blades you've blagged from Spaniard?

They only made the one style and called it Sporasub Pure. I would hazard a guess and say it was middle of the road compared to say C4's which used to have 3 'stiffness' options. They feel more robust than some of the C4 fins i've tried but i've only ever gone deep with them once (30m) at the SETT tank. I have very skinny legs and i've never tired from surface swimming with them or got cramps so it will be interesting to hear OMD's opinion.

Thanks Juan, Dave is sposed to be in this afternoon (guess what he's after!:mute) so we may hear his first impressions later.

Lovely day for most but not everyone!!!!!

Had a ball last night.

George took his camera, and I took my gun. It seems to be the only way he can shoot more then me! ;)

We were so wrapped up in taking pictures and video that the gun just came along for the ride. It was great fun. Need diffusers on the lights next time.

Here's a still from a video of a Red Mullet encounter. Lots more to come - when I get the time.

Not any more .. been brought into st sampsons harbour if you want a closer look! I have it on good authority that M+G are lifting it out.:)

Went in this afternoon to check out a hot tip re giltheads. Bit of a disaster though.

Got off work early but still not in 'til an hour and a half after low. Not dived this area much and was suprised by a strong current that just got stronger all the time. Also the vis was pants. Yes you could see the bottom at 20 foot in places but most of the time you couldn't see your hand holding the gun, never mind the end of the gun itself. The tide started moving up the beach and the reefs were disappearing fast. The current was flattening the bootlace and all in all made conditions not too good.

Then I remembered that I was parked in a disc zone and hadn't set my parking clock :vangry. Oh! and I had the carbon fins on. Two planks of lead strapped to my feet, well that's what it felt like at first. They felt so stiff that I was convinced that they weren't bending at all. However when I looked behind they looked to have a good action. After half an hour I was getting used to them although no doubt they are much stiffer than the ice fins. I am reserving judgement until after a few more dives but despite the strangeness I did start to get used to them.

Fish wise despite crappy conditions I saw a few but no gilties. Saw 3 bass and speared 2 of them. Both 3 to 4 pounders. Saw some mega mullet. Out of a total of a dozen plus seen, at least half were over 5lb. Most of them were coming very close and I could have had a hatful but was content to just land my bass so the mullet were unmolested.

Dave

Just seen it in the slings at M&G, didn't look very damaged, not that I looked that closely.

Good effort Dave, keep us informed how you get on with the carbon, very interested.

i had a quick swim off the rocks near me this evening - I'm starting to get my gear sorted (and I can load the gun fine now!) so can start to concentrate on the more relevant details of what's under the water.. saw a few mullet but was toooo slow.
Saw another chap who had a couple of mullet on the bag.
Well done Dave those bass look superb.
