Nice fish Andy - seems unusally fat for a mullet?

Had an invitation to go to France for the weekend with some friends on their boat - unfortunately they're leaving this afternoon and we can't get away until tomorrow.:vangry

Don't suppose anyone's heading for Carteret/ Dielette tomorrow with a couple of space for two?:) We only need a lift there. Manche Isles express aren't any use as usual!

Colin

It was a plan to go to Carteret this weekend (we are running out of wine:friday and need a trip to the Mutant Supermarket - what a name for a supermarket? No worse than con d'or though I suppose) the tide is perfect and weather looks good, but wifey has to go to work in the morning :head

Tom looking at that jacket it looks v comfortable, but how much weight can you get in it?

Thanks Andy for thinking of us anyway. I believe the Marinas close around midday tomorrow ( if that affects you), so that probably rules out leaving before late pm - which is when the Victor Hugo goes, which makes it not worth going.:head

Con d'or - very good - I hadn't heard that one before!

I must be going mad -I used to do a lot of 'adrenaline' sports includng paragliding (British team, 14000 ft, 100km+, etc, etc) - but after breaking my back quite substantially, I thought those days were far behind me - a bit of angling and caddying my son around a golf course fer me...
BUT NO! Now I find myself looking at methods of attaching ballast jackets and extra lead requirements for a bit of snorkelling ;-) what have I got myself into... :)

Seriously though, I dont have a weight belt or float yet, do you consider this essential to start with - I thought I'd learn to do the basics first - but what do people suggest?

That's a mighty fine wooden gun foxfish.

Hi Jonny

I'm in the same boat, haven't gone out with weights yet but finding getting any bottom time difficult I'm going to try some tonight. Due to a dodgy ear I can't get too deep but I hope to stop resurfacing like a polaris missle!

Cheers,

Grob

Newbies, I have weight moulds and facilities to make weights. Also have loads in stock from the recent visit by our English friends. We also make our own rubber belts. You need weights, especially with suits. Shallow work tends to need more weight and deep diving less weight. With a 5mm spearo suit most people use 15 to 25 lbs. Pesonally I use 21lb all on a waist belt and i'm a medium depth spearo. PM me for help.

Dave

PS we're talking for free here i.e. no charge but any scrap lead greatfully recieved.

Thanks Dave, gou've got mail.
Grob, yeah I know the polaris feeling - although I'm usually pretty keen to find some air by the time I'm going back up - I've started doing those A/B tables to try and improve on wimpy 35 second dives!

Hiya everyone in Guernsey!
Now we're back in Italy (that is Marco and Lora), and the sea is a long way from us now...no more early wake ups and sunrise dives, no more bass, no more fire house drinking sessions with our good mates...at least not for a little while. Here in Milan, Marco is like a fish out of water, it's difficult settling after a long while travelling and enjoying ourselves.
the fishing has currently been replaced with mushroom hunting, the sea, with the mountains, as currently all those little brown heads are emerging from under pine needles and oak leaves....in four days we managed to hunt around 20 kilos. Its a different type of hunt, mushrooms being far more illusive and stationary that bass, if you spot one they tend not to swim away with a flick of the tail...later i will post pictures...But for now i have to go!
I'll Write soon!

Hi Marco & Lora, unfortunately for you guys the sun has been out pretty much since you left for Italy! Don't worry though the fire house will be bigger & better for next year. :friday

Hi Marco and Lora - great to hear from you. With any luck I should be at least on the same continent as you tomorrow, as we've managed to cadge a lift to Carteret tomorrow morning.:friday

Any tips for spearfishing around there? My friend's son once caught a bass in the marina ( probably illegal) and has also gone out to the reefs on the beach around the corner ( opposite the lighthouse) I did once see the regulations on the notice board by the marina, but can't remember what it said about spearing.

Went in this afternoon at another plaiceless place:confused:

Never mind was in for 2 hours saw lots of cuttles but left them all and lots of rockies couple of biggies which I also left.

On the end of one of the reefs in the centre of the bay I saw a Triggerfish !!! Was tempted at a shot, but it didnt look big enough. The first time Ive seen one :)

Colin hope you have booked your table at Le Cap :p Spearing wise I think you are supposed to have a permit, but I have speared in Brittany a lot without one. There is a lot of current outside Carteret and viz never looks good plus diving with a hangover is never wise:friday

Crazyman I use a weight vest by Omer but any type of upper body weight system can give you neck ache in the shallows. I use ankle weights & a belt for shallow hunting & the vest for actual diving IE flatfish. However the vest is great & very comfy to use especially when walking down the beach.
Have a nice trip Col.
Bad luck Andy, nice to see the trigger though.

Sounds like wise advice - though hopefully I won't still have a hangover late afternoon ( although long lunch ...). I did find a pic I took last year of the fishing regs, and it seems spearfishing would not be one of the authorised methods. I also see that although min. sizes look the same, you are limited by numbers taken per day. As for bass this is 15, it's obviously not worth bothering anyway!:D Yes, I think Le Cap is booked, unless we go posh to Les Ormes!:p

Hopefully still get back for the low on Sunday!

Managed an hour late afternoon, out in the tide, out in the deep. just caught the one plaice about 2lb. Think I might try in the bays tomorrow, maybe that's where they are.

Sunday am hoping for a half day in the boat. Tempted to try some of my gravel banks as I haven't been out there for a month. Brill and turbot gotta show up soon, don't they????

Brittany is fished by a lot of top french spearos, great looking ground but difficult to get great catches! The crepes are good though rofl

Hi Grob, welcome to the forum. No restrictions in Herm that I know of ?
You don't give much away on your profile, are any of us likely to know you?
Foxfish, missed your post, sorry. Mysterious that's me! My name's Rémy if that's any help...

Came back earlier form trying out new weights and belt. Much improved down time with 16lb (with a 5/4/3 suit), although I'm going to take Old Man Daves advice and get a rubber belt. Hopefully this will stop the belt shifting up my body during dives.

Cheers,

Grob
