:)

( not sure if you've sussed posting yet!:) )

Good effort anyway - You're not related to njb by any chance are you?

Ha ha - posted the message then the computer locked up and it looked like it hadn't posted, so I retyped it. doh.
Who's njb?
I'm trying to figure out what makes a good beach for low tide spearing or what makes a good one for high tide - anyone prepared to offer me any pointers? Cheers.

Hi Jonny, we mostly dive at low water & only dive the high when there is no choice. If you find any consistent high tide marks be sure to let us know ;)
Of course it is possible to catch at any tide but when you start out it might be best to go on low water & find the boot lace weed.

Hi Jonny, hope you have a good read of the forum. As I said before if you have any questions ask away, no matter how daft they may seem.

As Foxy says low water a good place to start along with the margins of a reef, where the sand and weed meet, also any reef standing alone in an expanse of sand. Just remember you gotta be sloooooow and no splashing.

Given the fact that it is a beautiful day and my business partner has taken the morning off, with low water being at 14:50 I think I may just have to go in this afternoon.

Where though? Wind F4 E at the moment so probably west, maybe the sharp plaice? Any tips anyone? Apart from Seafresh or Checkers that is rofl rofl

Caught something on Friday... an ear infection ! Can't remember having one before but just starting to feel better - bit of a lingering beast.

Anyway, decided to do away with the normal route of anti-biotics and went down the homeopathic route. Hepar Sulphar (6c) seems to work for me (only remembered to try it yesterday).

Might give diving late at night a miss - not convinced the ears have time to dry out correctly. (ie head on pillow kind of thing...)

Anyway, can now open my jaw again too which is a bonus as I have some fish to eat :)

I think this is most likely the best time of year for flatties so I went to have a look for one - just over 4lb.

I went in near Ed's namesake as planned. Swam swam swam .... finally saw that elusive diamond shape at the end of one of my dives lying on the surface of the sand. Rather than push myself to get it I surfaced....BIG MISTAKE. As I dived down the blxxdy thing swam off!!! (I need Toms red letters!)

Maybe it swam in your direction Foxy? Nice fish by the way.

Settled for a 3lb mullet. Nice dive though

Evening all.

newbie here, well used to spearfish when I was a kid 20ish (ahem!) odd years ago, just getting back into it. Yet to catch anything though!

I was wondering if there are any restrictions on spearfishing around Herm, I understand that Sark is out of bounds.

Anyway, I've been trawling through all your posts, interesting stuff.

Cheers,

Grob

( hi grob and johny250 this is the place of all spearfishing knowledge)

Nice flatty Foxfish.
The wooden Mamba looks interesting. Is the top groove for aiming?
Don't recognize your car. Must be a Guernsey make!

Sam, I use a harness as well as a weight belt. Not because I ran out of room for weights but because I find it gives me a more comfortable aspect in the water, I feel better balanced and its easier to fin and I settle in a more comfortable position on aspetto. Also use ankle weights which do the same.

Can't fit enough on your belt? What size weights are you using and how many of them? If you've just got 2lbs blocks get hold of some 4 and 6lbs weights, they take up only slightly more room for a lot more weight.

One thing to be aware of is the majority of harnesses do not offer a quick release facility, so in emergencies they're not easy to dump.

Sam I recently moved to a harness. Made my own. I posted some pictures I think, but used this as a basis Lead Harness Mold If you want to buy they are about £60+ I think.

Mine is 11kg (about) and I find that perfect with a 5mm suit. I have found it so comfortable both in the water and especially walking down the beach. OK it doesnt have quick release for the shoulder straps, but the waist is an old weight belt so that does have quick release. I have an old rucksack with quick release clips which I will incorporate into my mk2 version this winter which will include bicycle inner tube filled with lead shot as well.

I think Foxy dives with a commercially bought one?

Here is a pick of the mullet from yesterday, which was tasty. Roast in the oven in a turkey roasting bag with white wine, olive oil, herbs etc

Got this afty off - so in again somerwhere:):) And I'm still peeved with myself over that plaice yesterday :vangry:vangry
