Guernsey 2007

So I went in around the Islands at Bordeaux, shockingly bad vis!! Anyhow I shot a 2.5lb Pollock, one of the biggest I have had for years & two GGs.

Hope you enjoy the pollack. In my opinion it's entirely underrated. As a fish for frying in batter it's at least as good as cod, maybe better? Perhaps not as good as haddock but I've never heard of anyone spearing a haddock.

There were lots of Pollack where I was the other day, not 2.5lb but lots nonetheless.

Might try 'down home' this afty.

My birthday present arrived yesterday..... a D3!!!! Its been hidden though and I'm not allowed to use it :head:vangry:martial

A few more details - I shot the Pollock just in the lee of some very strong tide (river) where the vis was a bit better. On my way way back between the Islands in very shallow water of about 2' I started seeing mullet, loads of mullet of all sizes. Amongst the thick lips were numerous GGs, when you see the two species together like that it is obvious to spot the difference.

Just arrived back from Carteret and going by the seas to the South of Sark and the wind warning, it sounds like it's probably not worth going in this afternoon.:head

Excellent time as usual - transported in luxury in friend's new boat. Picked up some live "bouquet" prawns at the market - really tasty. At Le Cap some had lobster smoked over a wood fire, with beurre blanc etc. They came around introducing the live lobster about to lay down his life, although the cynic in me wondered if it was the same one doing the rounds! Plateaux de fruits de mer were also fantastic. :)Delicious - I had a very good pigeon dish.:p:p:p

Correct Andy - Spiny's Aquastar 48. I wish my house was as luxurious!:)

Thanks for making me feel better about not going in. ( well done all the same for getting something in adverse conditions ):)

..and the boat we cadged a lift in was rather more modest, probably more my kind of boat! Did 27 knots though. We were very glad to have the lift, otherwise there was no way we could have got there.

And finally - the French have decided once and for all what our soles ( sounds rude??:)) should be called - night soles of course, none of this sand sole nonsense!rofl We also saw a nice sized lobbie - didn't get a pic but must have been at least 5lb, even though it only had one claw!

Morning all.

Not posted on here for a while..... but then i've not been in the water for a while either.

Went in at low, out west on Saturday. Wasn't too fussed about shooting anything but just fancied getting wet and wanted to try out my bouy... really just went sightseeing as the terrain round there is nice.

Vis was pretty poor in open water, but some patches of amazing vis in sheltered areas. Saw loads! longnose (i've never seen before), loads of schools of baby pollack and i guess sandeel?, more mullet than i've ever seen before... had my choice of about 7 all in range at one point including a monster size one!! and three triggerfish. no idea what these are like for eating but i was just enjoying watching them, they look so graceful.

It’s been a busy last week or two. After such a rubbish year for vis and fish the last couple of weeks of this Indian summer have seen a rejuvenated OMD. Been in freedive spearing for 8 out of the last 11 days. That’s 3 night dives and 5 day dives either after work or at weekends. The weather and tides have been good so not sure what went wrong with those 3 missed days – must be getting old.

Don’t claim to have broken any records for quantity or size of fish but even so compared to the rest of the year the final score doesn’t look too bad: 9 bass, 9 plaice, 3 soles, 1 pollack and a brill. Best fish was my 7lb bass which was my biggest this year and the best plaice went 4lb. My
7lb plaice was caught 2 weeks ago so is not counted in this list.

Saturday I was out in the bays to see if the plaice had arrived. Offshore there were a few last week and I was wondering if the bays would produce. Vis was good and fish were in. Trouble was they were all small. Found 14 plaice plus my first free dived brill of the year. I think 2 plaice were undersized and the other 12 from minimum legal up to a pound or so. The brill was about 1.5 lb. Every one of the plaice were well buried and I dived down and measured each one to check legal size. Speared the 5 biggest leaving the other legal but smaller ones to grow. The brill was lying uncovered on gravel as usual but was still probably the hardest to see of all the fish.

I was pleased with my haul because even if the average size was small those are most definitely the best eating fish.

Dave

I'm mighty impressed by that bag of flats Dave. Seeing it gives me incentive to keep on trying. I know there are some plaice, flounders, and brill in this area. I need to pinpoint where exactly and how to spot them.

gsyrider, good to hear from you again, sounds like you had fun.
Triggers are good to eat but they do bite!
Good catches Dave, I think I have only had a few plaice this year & to be honest I don't think I will be getting many more. There is no getting away from the fact my ears cant take anymore flatfish sessions! I suffer from pain & ringing for several days following every time I dive more than a few metres.
Having said that I have caught plenty of flats in only a few metres but that was in the good old days! :head
Sunfish dont give up once you get your eye in you will be on a roll.

They look great maggeres I think someone was using the same fins during the summer fishin?

They're the same as Ed's I believe, but without the paint (may have to apply my own custom pattern ;))
